I feel like with Nate's sexuality, not only could being gay seem emasculating to him, I also feel like, due to his father's sex tapes, he also feels, in a way "twinkified". He doesn't necessarily fear being gay, he fears being sexualized and objectified by "more masculine" men. I think it's one of his most interesting character themes: At the start of Euphoria, I was convinced Nate's dad sexually abused him, because you could really sense this fear. Nate may not have been sexually abused by his dad (directly), but subconsciously he still thinks he could become one of these young men in the porn tapes, and it terrifies him.

it is crazy how they never addressed Cassie's abortion ever again. And how Mckay just disappeared. But you made me realize exactly what was missing to make the whole new plotpoints more acceptable: showing cassie's fragile mental state and maybe beginning of a depressive episode before she got in with Nate. That could have changed a lot for many viewers. EDIT: some of you replied this and I must agree that it does make sense that cassie is most likely refusing to deal with the aftermath of her traumatic experience by continuing with her unhealthy copy mechanisms (being validated through men and/or love), which leed her to more traumatic experiences before she even gets to deal with what it meant for her to get an abortion or break up with mckkay. she could just straight be trying to substitute the pain for more "love" without dealing with it and that's why they did not address it in the show. "the majority of us judging Cassie have failed her." > I agree with this and I also do not think people should put Lexi in such a nice light all the time. I was extremely unconfortable on how much she exposed her sister in her own play and everybody thought that was okay... repeating her embarrassing MDMA/carrossel moment in front of her school is just cruel.

@intellexualweq35262 жыл бұрын
It’s not really crazy if that was the writer’s intention. Let me explain: Sometimes in life, after people experience really traumatic situations they substitute dealing with the aftermath for other traumatic situations. It’s a really sick cycle that can be broken once one gains self- awareness and is ultimately tired of making the same mistake but that sometimes takes a while from months to years. Also let’s not forget all that old trauma that never got processed coming up again. That’s what I think the writers are doing with Cassie, all her old unprocessed trauma she’s going to deal with mid show running and fully healed by the end becoming a whole new women. If not… they definitely missed an opportunity.🤷🏾♀️

One thing that I feel was weird about the Cassie conflict was that everyone kept saying Cassie slept with her best friend’s ex-boyfriend, but no one mentioned the fact that it was her best friend’s ABUSIVE ex-boyfriend. There are characters in the story who knew about the abuse (including Cassie herself ? I can’t remember) but no one mentioned that. Obviously sleeping with someone who your best friend is thinking of going back to is already bad, but it’s even worse if it was your best friend’s abuser??? Am I going crazy??
@gracekang21612 жыл бұрын
This is the only time I'm gonna defend Cassie's actions, but alot of the characters in-universe don't have a real reason to think Nate is abusive. No one has ever seen how fucking awful the guy is besides his family (who's gonna bury every crime he commits) and his victims. Maddie defended him every chance she got and has barely come to terms with the abuse herself. Her post-break up complaints could be chalked up to a typical, toxic relationship to an outsider. Nate was also cleared of all charges after the other guy turned himself in. Who's gonna question a guy who willingly admitted to those crimes? Abuse aside, it's fucked that Cassie went after her best friends ex, period. She's well aware of how toxic they were together, even though she may not have been aware of the abuse

One of the big problems with the second season is that it feels like the viewer is watching two completely different shows, and to some extent, disconnected from each other. On one side we had this triangle Nate, Maddy and Cassie; on the other, Rue Jules, Elliot and the suitcase plot. In the end, Elliot is a totally unnecessary character and the Jules and Rue plot would be much better without him. Putting them at Maddy's party would make the plots come together and it would be much more interesting to watch as we would have: Nate, Jules, Rue, Maddy, Cassie all in the same place. It would be dramatic and interesting at the same time. Including the fact that the Jules and Rue plot would arrive at the same place, as there were also a lot of drinks at the party.

You encapsulated the idea of why Nate probably likes Cassie really well. I get it. Nate can't actually have complete control like he wants over Maddie because Maddie is demanding and domineering and they clash VERY often leading to their many breakups. Cassie, despite him not actually liking her and is quite annoyed by her, is very easy to control. She gives into her whims and is very soft and naive. She has all the attributes Nate wanted in Maddie for the sake of control. That's all he truly cares about and I feel like in that moment when he decided to go after Cassie, it was probably the start or the duration of him kind of not wanting Maddie anymore, at least as the primary girl. His life is slipping from the "stability" that he deemed as such because of the abuse thing, the Jules stuff, his sexuality, his dad. I always saw Nate's sudden fall for Cassie having to do with Jules. At first, he didn't really like her. He took advantage of her being drunk in S2E1 and because he views her as "easy" to have sex with. But after he gets beat up, we see him fantazising about Maddy, Cassie, and Jules. So he thinks he loves Cassie, or forces himself to love Cassie, because she can be the version of Jules that he wants: similar looks but completely, traditionally feminine. And that's why it seems like he doesn't really love her, because he doesn't. He just wants to replace Jules with someone that he thinks he could be with while still thinking of her. Not to mention, he knows that Cassie is easy to control and he can manipulate her. Even with their fighting scenes, she doesn't fight back nearly as much as Maddy or Jules would.

@@artatmidnight Yeah I'm also bias because I didn't like Jules in season 1 (I'm not a hater I just didn't like her for Rue) and therefore don't consider her actions inconsistent because I always regarded her as a really self-centered person who might possibly be Polyamorous. The Jules special tried to redeem her from a Rules pov but I didn't buy it because it felt like Hunter's version of Jules and not the real one Sam introduced to us in season 1,so when Sam's version of Jules came back the hate/dislike also came back from the audience too. The lead up to the cheating being due to sexual frustration and the Elliot's charm (who would've gotten to me too ngl) made sense to me because I understood Jules saying she's no longer interested in men to mean that she won't conform to beauty standards that aim please men anymore as a trans woman and not that she's not going to date one ever again
@iris-xo2 жыл бұрын
you're so wrong. Jules cheating is inconsistent!! Jules isn't the type of person to cheat based on season 1. Jules is someone who was searching for actual LOVE. She spent countless nights with weirdos because shes a young trans woman who never felt she could be loved openly and proudly by someone else until she met Rue. Rue opened up Jules to realizing she does deserve real genuine love by someone else. The Anna situation was meant to represent how badly Jules wanted Rue to show interest in her without being so timid and shy, and it's hard to love Rue with how much she was depending on Jules for sobriety in season 1. That's what made Jules hesitant to be commit to Rue in season 1.

@@karabokhanyile Jules telling Rue about Anna was basically her way of throwing hints to Rue of how she wants Rue to be more forward with her. Rue is too anxious to tell Jules how she actually feels about her. In the whole show we only as viewers hear what Rue thinks of Jules but she never fully expresses this to Jules, so in Jules’s POV she’s always getting mixed signals and confused. Especially in season 2 - where Rue is lying about being sober and blowing Jules off to hang out with Eliott secretly resulting in Jules thinking she’s a bad girlfriend & Rue isn’t really into her anymore. Rue lacks communicating with Jules properly.

1. I genuinely hate how much people victim blame Cassie but basically put Maddie on a pedestal. 2. Nate is too evil that he isn't believable at all. 3. They ruined Lexie by having her put on a horrible play were she did something she had no right to do, air out everyones dirty laundry. Why did people think that was some amazing move? It was petty and pathetic. 4. Why does no one talk about the fact that Nates parents are clearly both horrible and don't love their kids? It would be a miracle if any of the kids came out normal with those parents. I'm not defending Nates actions but I feel like that is the reason he is the way he is, and no one seems to ever bring it up and actually talk about it. 5. Why in the world was Cassie's abortion never talked about again? I imagine that had a huge effect on her and its just never talked about in the show? 6. Good to know that we can talk about drug abuse, SA, DV, and abortion but still use the abuse victims become abusers trope (Nate). 7. What even is this show anymore?! 8. gonna reply bc i agree with you so much!!!! 1. absolutely agree. i hate that they're pitted against each other in this season and by the end it all felt pointless, that whole "love triangle" felt that way. i actually like cassie and sympathize with her a lot and despise what sam did to her. a complete 180 with hardly any build up and no satisfying conclusion for something that took up way too much screentime. 2. YES i thought he was bad enough in s1 when he kept escalating the tyler/maddy/jules stuff along with also abusing maddy and getting off scot free AND snitching on fez, but s2 was even more insane. it felt like he was a shell of a human and i wish they focused more on his trauma. 3. same. i will never understand why so many people thought the play was such a girlboss move. it singlehandedly ruined her for me too and took away any sympathy i had for her. there was no reason good enough to do that, especially when cassie was so obviously having a long drawn out nervous breakdown that everyone treated like teenage fit throwing. 4. yeah that expands on how i wish his trauma was explored more and was more consistent. also why were we teased again with the missing little brother stuff? it's so unbelievable that all this interpersonal family drama goes down but absolutely NO mention of that kid. 5. she's so clearly spiraling and traumatized from this and has no support and never gets to cope with this before she's in an awful relationship with nate where she's treated like the worse person and like a villain. the choice to put her through that in s1 only to make her this awful with no explanation or development in s2 is rancid. 7. idk, i'm still not over rue's narration at the end that implies that the rest of the school year could be completely off screen when half the characters are about to graduate and leave and the drug dealer issues/fez's fate weren't mentioned at all. also hate what they did to jules and kat and how many plotlines just got totally wiped with no explanation. the show might as well take place on mars.

Nate went through a pretty major retcon that not many people seem to recognize. S1 Nate is the asshole jock with a hot girlfriend. He's the guy that everyone loves for some reason but you avoided in school, only to find out that he was an abusive prick. Because that's all he was- a manipulative and smart, but hotheaded prick. S2 Nate is turning into a fullblown psychopath with serious school shooter vibes. Isn't he supposed to be the hot, popular football guy? Why does he not have a single friend? We literally do not see him interact with anyone but the main cast and he's always skulking around. Since when did he lose all his friends and popularity? I didn't even notice how much his character changed to be much colder until I saw clips from the first season. He showed alot more emotion back then. What made Nate scary in the first place is how much he hides his darkness, and how far he's willing to go to get what he wants

Lexi writing a play about everybody's lives was a horrible idea and I think on paper it was supposed to be this deep psychology journey of how she viewed everybody, which makes sense if she's suffering from depression or on the verge of a nervous breakdown, but instead it comes across as shallow and vindictive, especially towards her sister. Cassie does deserve it though. If anything, I thought Lexi's story would have been a way for her and Fez to bond and we have intimate scenes of them forming this friendship by hanging out and bonding. She starts to see things from his life perspective while remaining logical and rational. She learns to be more outgoing and not hide herself from people, she can break free of living in the shadow of her sister, by standing up to Cassie and her mother. Kat treating Ethan like shit in the diner. The writers go out their way to show Kat as a manipulative, selfish, bitch. Having her go on this whole rant referring to incel reddit forums when he was being very direct and calm about her pathetic lie claiming she has a brain disorder. She also was playing games with him talking about "my experience" sounds very similar to when certain people talk about "my truth". I don't know what they were thinking when writing her this season. Lastly is Cassie ...she needs psychotherapy and counseling. That's about it. She probably needs to befriend a few guys that don't want to screw her to show that she is capable of making healthy friendships with men without revolving her entire self around the guy she's with. @@mintyskullz i can see what you’re saying, however if she reslly wanted to show them they’re actions yk she could’ve just put on the play for them, or for them and a couple other people, not the whole school. Rue doesn’t resllt have a problem w it so it’s not a big deal, but i personally don’t think that was okay for lexi to share her buisness out there to the world about her addiction and her dads passing/funeral. Wirh Cassie we all know she deserves it, but Lexi’s intentions don’t seem nice, she says she didn’t write the play to embarrass Cassie but along with the help of Cassie herself, it humiliated her. ( especially with the carousel scene, bc in what part is that necessary) Don’t worry i’m not arguing or anything, I love Lexi i just think people like her so much they tend to just overlook this
@jessica-uj4bw2 жыл бұрын
@@AutumnExplorer you’re totally right here, yes Lexi’s play might’ve been to show her side of things, to finally been seen/heard, however here’s the thing the play isn’t even really about her, of course it is in a sense she’s the narrator/play writer and she’s giving us a run down of her life, but she never shared anything about herself, nothing that makes her well her, it’s all just about other people like her friends and their private matters. I feel like Lexi wanted to use this position as an observer, a side character, to share how she feels and in a way she did, but not necessarily. Her play doesn’t include any of her self struggles besides maybe idk cassie hitting puberty before her but that’s not really something v important,. It also reminds me of how people get invested in celebrities and always try to air their business in a way. Rue is a very shy person and has multiple mental illnesses, she didn’t even want to go up on stage in s1 so i’m honestly surprised she wasn’t upset at Lexi, but i’m not complaining or anything. I just think that addiction and death/greif are extremely personal matters and know matter how much you’re upset with the person you don’t air their buisness to other people, let alone the whole school (i’m realizing right now that she did send a script to Rue beforehand however i just still think it shouldn’t be included but if she’s okay with it) Now with Cassie, not that cassie is an amazing bc she’s not, we all saw how she acted this season, she was a wreck, but she didn’t deserve to be embarrassed like that. Lexi said her play wasn’t to do that, but it did, and honeslty i think that’s just something she’s telling herself, bc if she didn’t want to humiliate cassie she wouldn’t of wanted to put some of the things she put in the play like she did. For an example the carousel scene like what did that have anything to relate to what Lexi was sharing about her? Cassie clearly has issues and i’m not going to diagnose her here i’m not a doctor, but i do believe she a has mental issues most likely stemmed from the trauma of her dad, which is not an excuse of course just an explanation. Lexi sees her sister isn’t in a good state of mind, and even if Cassie was being awful to her, she didn’t need to do all that, like you said her play just comes off as petty and vindictive in my opinion. With Maddy too it’s like Lexi didn’t even ask her to put in the issues with her family, like maybe it’s not a big deal, but from what we know about maddy she doesn’t like being vulnerable, or it seems that way. now im not trying to hate in Lexis character, i still like her, i just don’t agree with her decision to do that like a lot of Lexi fans do. okay now onto kat, i’m disappointed this season with kats character in general, and i know that’s because of the whole Sam and Barbie thing, but everything just seems so unexpected? like for just more drama they wanted to include issues w kat and ethan, or it’s like they didn’t know what to do now that they just threw away that storyline. Yes we see kat gaining more of a voice, more confidence, but the thing is you can do that and still not be a bitch. I like kat but that’s exactly what they turned her into. Like last season the finale she really like ethan and was finally trusting him that he likes her for her, which is great progress for her character and for her overall! Then season 2 starts and all the sudden she can’t stand him? I get that’s because she has self esteem issues, but they could’ve found a better way to write that in, while not including the diner scene (because as an audience that gives us no sympathy for kat). And lastly cassie, oh boy there’s alot i can say about her but i think you basically summed it up, like maddy, cassie has never had an ideal of stable relationship growing up, her parents fought and ended up divorcing, on top of that her dad basically abandons them. We don’t know for sure but i don’t believe cassie has been in therapy, and i feel like that would benefit her alot, as long as she needs to put in the effort to be better. She looks for happiness in other people, because she can’t stand to be alone, because of her abandonment issues. To her, being in love no matter how it makes her feel, good, bad, etc, is better than being sad, good, etc by herself, inside she is still just a little girl looking for the love her dad never gave her, she needs to look for things that make HER happy outside of people/ and not turn to substances either (alcohol) which we can see addiction runs through both her dad and mom. She needs to heal her inner child, and i believe a lot more progress and happiness with come for her then, but mot until she understands this and gets the help. I’m sorry that this was so long, i just had a lot to say 😭

i was willing to accept rue’s stupid drug dealer idea since it was pretty clear she was manic, and in a state like that people won’t be consistent with their own personality. my issue with it was just that it went nowhere. like is she really not gonna face any consequences for the amount of money she owes that lady??
@Joi.5302 жыл бұрын
After Lori gives her the heroine rue blacks out and wakes up in a room with multiple needle marks on her arm while shes locked in a room. Lori lied about not having anything but heroine in order to trap rue (you can see she has a suitcase full of other drugs) and keeps rue under the influence while letting men have sex with the her unconscious body. Hence the line "The good thing about being a woman is that you always have something people want." and the other line about selling her to some real bad people. She was using Rues body to make back the money. Even so.... they didn't actually do anything with that other than show Rue look kinda panicked after seeing the marks on her arms and running away. So Rue technically did face consequences no one dwelled on it for very long though

to me it seems that Sam thinks making characters suffer in and of itself makes for great art. The problem with season 2 (among many problems) is that the characters go through all of this suffering with little to no growth to show for it. In many cases, they even backslide. Which can be true to life, but the show makes the backsliding seem like an inconsistency with the writing and not a genuine slip back into old thinking/habits. There’s hardly any consequences or lessons learned, and by the finale, we’re expected to believe they’ve overcome despite doing little to earn that belief. The growth feels forced and inconsistent. The only exception to this is Rue and that’s why I wish Sam would get a writers room or had just created the show about Rue and Rue only.

I think this season was the way it was because of behind the scenes conflicts and production stuff, but mostly also the pressure to make the second season better than the literal cultural resitter that was season 1, and if we also think, the show was never liked or praised because of the storylines neither the plot or anything, but it was for the visuals, the outfits, the transitions and the MAKEUP, so I think to kinda separate that, was hard, especially when you have millions of people expecting the best from you. but still, it was a good season and I really liked it.

i'm still so disappointed about how rue and jules' relationship was handled. of course it was destined to fail from the start, but the way it failed was a missed opportunity. we could've gotten to see how addiction affects romance, dive into rue's codependency issues, and explore jules' trauma with her alcoholic mother. i know elliot was supposed to be there to show that jules falls back to male validation when she's insecure in her relationship (because rue was so high and neglectful), but to me his character came off as a man forced between the main queer girls in the show who made gross s3x jokes (elliot says rue and jules are playing "lesbian power games" with him during the truth or dare scene). just bad writing all around imo.

She doesn't have BPD she's just having a mental breakdown if she had BPD her symptoms would be portrayed more and consistently in the first season we should stop trying to label people with mental disorders if its not confirmed and the only thing confirmed in the show is that Cassie is depressed and on a mental spiral over an abusive man. We can safely assume its because of the trauma of her abortion and breakup. But we're not about to slap the BPD label onto her character just because we resonate with her outbursts. I too have BPD and CPTSD and I don't think she acts like she has BPD at all I think she is just a girl with daddy issues and repeated disappointments, and is not properly dealing with the fact that she had to abort her fetus and broke up with the man she thought she was in love with. She is desperate for male validation because she thinks it makes up for the fact that her father ran out on her family and she feels like no man will ever love her because her father didn't love her enough to stay and beat his addictions. And with every failed relationship she goes through it reiterates in her mind that she is in fact, unlovable. Not to mention she's had revenge porn released who knows how many times since it seems like every dude she gets with shares her nudes and their sexual exploitation with the group chat. She is just traumatized and refusing to deal with her issues and its not a consistent character trait so no she doesn't seem like she has BPD.

I think Nate started to be into Cassie bc she reminds him of Jules and since cassie's a biological woman, he can be perceived as straight in his mind. but we see time and time again he always has Jules at the back of his mind until he couldn't help himself to be near her. when he gave back the disc I believe he did that just so he had a reason to talk to her or be near her after she distance herself away from him. not because he generally wanted to do the right thing I think he fell in love with the person but since the world is very judgemental about your body type and race and looks that the he can't express his love for her and it leads to internal hatred for not being able to be himself and so he puts out toxic energy bc he's unhappy at least when it comes to his romantical issues for he has other issues more than that. Jules I believe fell in love with shyboy(Nate) and was hurt when it wasn't real but still had lingering feelings that caused her to leave but she eventually came back she tries to cover up that wound with rue but when Elliott came around he could fulfill the sexual urges that rue just unfortunately can't leading( at least that is what I think and why Jules cheated, bc she didn't know rue was on drugs. But when she talked to Nate again and said same too to what she felt being real and looked back I believe she still in love with him but now that shes friends with Maddy that can't never be seeing how things happened with Cassie.

I honestly viewed Elliot as the male version of Rue and that’s what attracted rue to him essentially. It’s obvious that Rue has narcissistic tendencies, & the aspects she likes were actually aspects she didn’t realise she liked about herself. Or perhaps he had qualities she wished she didn’t lack so he made up for what she was missing. I also think that’s why Jules was attracted to Elliot because he’s basically Rue just without the baggage & is male. The & Elliot meeting in the laundry to both do drugs is a big indicator that he is basically another version of Rue.

He didn't give any insight on what Jules was thinking or feeling throughout the season especially after she randomly got with Eliott... we barely see her again.

Completely agree with everything you said about every character you mentioned. It feels like people are either blindly defending all of these character actions or blindly hating the characters for writing choices that makes zero sense.

Exactly I hate how Cassie is just an irredeemable villain. It was not true to her character and just boring to watch bc the drama surrounding Cassie felt SO cheap and poorly executed. Maybe if she had sex with Nate once or something and tried to change that would make sense for Cassie, but doubling down and making Cassie completely unlikable made the plot instantly boring

@@gracekang2161 thank you!! This is what I’ve been saying to people, how can you actually hate Jules or Kat? Their season 2 actions made very little sense to me and felt so forced and random. Why would Kat suddenly treat Ethan so poorly after her growth at the end of season 1??? Things really changed THAT much in the span of 3 weeks!! The way Kat broke up with Ethan was so dumb and unnecessary why even break them up?? Kat barely had any screentime anyways why not just make them a happy couple in the background.. & jules’ actions was so backwards where she left off in her special episode - so I can’t even be mad at the characters I’m moreso upset with the WRITING

@@epicgamer8117 literally!! Season 2 Cassie is NOT the Cassie we are introduced to in season 1. I don’t care how many ppl claim that Cassie becoming like that makes sense…. It really does not - maybe if it was led up to better and done in a way where we can properly see what Cassie was thinking but there’s no mention of her abortion, McKay is just gone, there’s no mention of Daniel, he’s just gone. She’s randomly forced to be with Nate - which makes NO SENSE for either of their characters. Nate was DISGUSTED by Cassie because of how she was seen and carried herself, and Cassie knew how badly Nate talked about her & how he treated Maddy. Ugh It’s so annoying

@@iris-xo It's so insane how people justify Kat's suddenly disliking Ethan as if they had been dating for months. It's fuckin weird

How do Maddy and Cassie have a strong friendship in season one? They have one scene on carnival where they are both on drugs, besides that, there’s zero connection. Maddy and Kat’s relationship is way more believable, we know their backstory and can guess why they’re friends in the first place.

I feel like there should have been another season in between 1 and 2. The problem with how characters developed in season 2 seems to be the fact that sam forgot it’s only been 1 month in between both seasons, so most of the things that happens in season 2 don’t make sense because they don’t fit with what happened in the first one. I agree with your point of view of them all, and the direction is probably not too bad, the main problem is that all doubts from season 1 weren’t solved, and in “one month” the characters took a whole different narrative.

I absolutely loved this. The character chapter intros you made were so beautiful and enchanting!! You are talented and this was so great to watch.

In season 1 Ethan promised Kat that he would make sure he was the one that got hurt. he followed through on that promise 😢

It sucks that whenever there is a reoccurring/main character who is plus size, they are usually hated by the general public because they were written badly (or there is some internal fatphobia going on). Take Bridgerton for example.

So weird that they would take the only bigger character and make her a cam girl as a minor and frame it as a good thing because “well some people actually like her body now!” LIKE BRO WHAT THATS ALL YOU COULD THINK OF

@@junohawthorne7658 right! I’m all for body empowerment but there is more to bigger people. Why can’t bigger people just exist and have other interests. But no, we have to have low self esteem

even on the books penelope lost weight before being with colin, hate it so much i hope they go in a different direction on the new series, i hate the whole “ugly duckling” transformation in shows where a character surely can’t be happy until they’re skinny which is why i’m so glad barbie stood her ground and was against kat having an eating disorder

I mean I don't think Rue was trying to become a drug dealer, but instead she just wanted to find a way to do drugs for free. She was planning on doing all the drugs and then killing herself, which I think actually is quite consistent

i think sam levinson thought that only serving crazy dramatics without backing it up with real actions and story would be good enough, but it’s those actions and story which made the drama so compelling in the first place.

Most people bash on Cassie, but you actually deeply looked at and analyzed her. It was interesting to hear about and made me look at her in a different light.
