I feel like the reason as to why Nate has a list of things he likes about girls is to reinforce and convince himself that he is in fact only attracted to females (ie side effects of his internalised homophobia)

yup i was thinking that too. for him his attraction to women is only abt control. he’s not attracted to maddy he’s attracted to basically „owning“ her, like she’s just a checklist of traits a perfect girlfriend would have for him. they’re probably gonna make him bi in the show but personally i read him as fully gay cause i don’t even think that guy’s ever thought abt boobs in a sexual way lol

also! a pretty small scene but when he jacks off in the shower or something he’s only staring intensely at his own reflection. i think it’s the same with sex he doesn’t even care abt the girl he thinks abt himself and gets off on the power he has in that situation. who knows how it would be with a guy… probably different and i think he knows that but forces himself not to think abt it

I agree with everything you said. I really want to see Nate become a better person and get over his internalized homophobia, but he's probably gonna do more fucked up things in season two. I actually got into this show because of a clip I saw on KZbin of Nate's breakdown in episode 8. I thought his acting was so amazing and I just had to watch it. So coming in with that clip in mind, I didn't hate him as much as everyone else did. I thought his character was so fucking intriguing and so scary at the same time. I think because of his dad's porn tapes, he was really fucked up. I mean, no kidding. But, I think an 11 year old seeing their dad being very rough and dominating over smaller sized, less masculine, gay men and trans women, he became afraid of him and didn't want Cal to do something like that to him. Cal is a good dude and I don't think he'd ever do something like that, but I think Nate grew up despising him for that reason. My take on Nate is that he's so afraid of being like his dad (queer in some way), that he gets obsessive over working out and building himself up to be a traditionally masculine man. He eyes Maddy because theres nothing masculine about her appearance. The checklist he makes of things he likes about girls is not what he actually likes--but what appears to be things that make him look the most heterosexual. Even the slightest "masculine" attitude a girl can have makes him paranoid. So when he dates Maddy, he convinces himself he loves her when in reality, they hate each other, and he only likes the idea of controlling her and being her protector--as a man "should". He probably is going to be bi or gay because everything in film is intention. If they dedicated numerous scenes where it was put into question whether Nate was into women at all (the dick pics and when he couldn't get hard), then they're going to follow up on it.

if I was a teen watching this, a lot of plot lines would simply be beyond my comprehension. Like, when I watched skins as a tween and I hardly could relate or understand the motivations of the characters. I only could romanticize the characters and I took away the wrong lessons tbh. (I used cassies anorexia plotline to feed into my own ed and effy made me see my depression as some kind of tragic and beautiful character trait that would be attractive. Obviously, in retrospect, it's totally inane and stupid for that to be my takeaway, but I was a traumatized teen that felt 'seen' with my mental illness and clung to unrealistic portrayals.

I mean, yes but then the whole part about sending nudes being a crime wouldn't make sense. And that's the theme of 2 arcs, minus the one where nate's dad gets scared because he had sex with a minor. I guess a show like that could work, but then it would just be dumbed down to the fact that these people are making mistakes and they should have known better. I guess they could just make a whole different show where they discuss different issues...or they do this

I agree. I actually have a lot in common with Rue. I have a lot of mental illness problems and I understand a lot of her feelings about things. But I also understand that what happens makes a lot of people uncomfortable. While I think Euphoria is very realistic in how it represents young people and mental health and interpersonal relationships, that also makes it really disturbing. Personally, I think this show is for gen Z young adults.

i don't know anything about this show, i hate soap operas and i don't even watch tv but that answer was very insightful and i think you're right. obsession with celebrity was already a thing by roman times and i too have always been puzzled by how wrapped up in it people can get especially women can almost forget that it's only entertainment. i know our fantasy lives are very important to our well being and alot of people are unhappy with their real life for various reasons but still..... and as it happens nowhere do you have tv where you don't have soap operas even in the poorest countries so something deep and heavy is going on there.

Fair point fosho👌 identifying with it and really digging the show makes me feel all conflicted later when I really stop and think like "uh oh, they just glorified an underage literal child being a cam girl, didn't they?😬🤦🏻‍♀️" Not great lol if it was solely focused on the gorgeous, devastatingly real portrayal of Rue's addiction and just used the side plots in a non condescending, "after school special" kind of way where the cam girl gets someone arrested for watching her or the jock who choked out his gf actually had to serve a little time for assault, I think that would at least steer the intention of the show toward something more constructive without having to compromise any of the grittiness. I mean if anything, the in your face artistic lense would be a benefit to drive home the point that maybe no, lying about your age and meeting up with strange men online is not a good idea JULES! Lmao

I think Nate’s obsession with getting fit/muscular is because he saw himself in his dad’s hookups and wanted to look as physically unlike them as possible. He was 11, so it’s likely he mixed his dad’s sexûal kinks with himself (doesn’t help that these young and feminine men would call Cal “daddy” either). In some ways, I think he felt physically violated-hence the later scene when Cal’s on top of him and he looks in the mirror and just starts screaming/banging his head. He was in the “position” of one of Cal’s sexual partners, and his brain clearly conflated the two. It’s also why his internalized homophobia shapes his preferences in girls. There were parallels in the shots of him beating up Tyler and looking in the mirror, and him being under his dad; he feels strong and powerful and, most importantly, unlike the men/trans women in Cal’s video so he’s “asserting” his power and dominance through physical violence.

The thing with the narration by Rue is that she is speaking the characters thoughts and feelings to the audience. Her narration isn't objective, she isn't accurately observing the realities of the story. An unreliable narrator if you will. So when you hear her say that a 14 year old Maddie slept with a 40 year old man but she was the one in control, those are Maddie's feelings on the event. Or when the takeaway from Kat's narration is that guys still find her attractive, instead of the fact that a minor was exploited. Kat seemed more worried about her body being seen and judged unattractive, over a major invasion of privacy. Aspects of the show like this is clearly why it isn't a show for teens. Yeah sure it's about teens and that's pretty much the whole of the audience, I'm just worried what they'll take away from this. Like I'm sure the writers are not saying saying that a 14 year old Maddie had any control in that situation, but that might just go over a teens head.

I thought it would be cool if Lexi became the second narrator of the show, because as of the second season Lexi is shown more as being the observer of the group, Rue not being very reliable I think it’d be cool if another person who wasn’t a bit foggy on details because they do drugs could narrate stuff, Lexi is an observer, she doesn’t really say anything she just watches, not judging her at all btw, but she just observes everything, I think because rue at the end of season 2 stayed clean through the rest of the year in school, and made amends with Lexi, rue is the main character and I think whoever she’s going to be around more in the next season should get more screen time, if she’s gonna start trying to be a better friend to Lexi and possibly try and let Jules go in the next season then rue can still as the main character narrate but Lexi could also narrate some bits with her and we can get more clear details on things, I feel like it all fits perfect and it would just be cool in general to see, I just love that Lexi as a character is an observer and I think that it could be utilized, I’m sorry this long I just needed to get this out, I hope someone finds this interesting

You know what's funny? The other day I was watching a reboot of the babysitter's club, where the characters are supposed to be middle school aged (like 12ish), and I remember watching it and thinking "wow! I'm so glad that the director chose to cast actors around that age instead of ageing the characters up/casting actors who look obviously older than the age of their character!" Come to find out later, those actors were around 16-17. It really got me thinking... we're so conditioned to see 20 something actors portraying teenagers that we're starting to forget what teenagers ACTUALLY look like! Teenagers aren't mini adults, at the end of the day, they are still legally children, and I agree with you Serena, that Hollywood has a HUGE problem with sexualising children.

As a huge consumer of film (and someone who has studied it), I think shows like this are necessary. There is a disclaimer at the beginning of each episode, so viewers who might get triggered should just not watch it. It is great for representation in the lgbtqia+ community, and it also doesn't shy away from things that do actually happen. Yes, this universe is fictional and amped up, but things like this really happen on smaller scales. It is also necessary to have adults playing kids because then you can actually graphically show everything. If the show didn't push the boundaries, it wouldn't work. You can't have a show about drug addiction if you don't show people doing/selling drugs. Show don't tell is a huge part of what makes film so great. I do think that parents need to be able to have conversations with their kids who are watching things like this to be able to guide them and answer questions.

I don't think Euphoria is influencing teenagers to behave like that. I grew up watching Gossip Girl (I read the books when I was 10 and started watching the series at 12), and never once considered actually doing what the characters were doing. Specially because, while it's glamorized, it's all a mess, both in GG & Euphoria the characters aren't happy. Jenny goes on a downward spiral and loses everything, Serina's party girl ways keep getting her in danger, Rue's drug addiction keeps interfering in her personal relation, Jules is having problems as a result of sexting and sending nudes. If anything, these tv shows are huge warnings "don't do this, look how shit things get".

@@karisdietrich1964 I think that's actually a good part of it, because while it is portraying teenagers expressing their sexuality, the sex scenes are almost never romantic. They all carry a sense of discomfort to them, from the time Jules sleeps with nate's dad, when Kat loses her virginity or when any of the other characters have sex, it's less glorified than in other shows. I believe part of the outrage against the show is because people are aware that these are teenagers and we don't like to see them put in dangerous situations.

I agree with a lot of this. I actually think that Euphoria shows teenagers how they really are. I think, as a society, we like to pretend that teenagers don’t do these things or that shows like this influence teens to do these things, but teenagers already do this. They did before Euphoria and they will long after it’s gone. I think where Euphoria is different from shows like Pretty Little Liars and Gossip Girl is that Euphoria is a lot more real and deals with issues that gen Z (my generation) is having trying to navigate through the world. I think that makes people very uncomfortable, which is understandable because you don’t want to think about literal minors doing these things, but it doesn’t help to pretend that they don’t.

It's so silly that studios try to convince us otherwise. If there was an all black cast that had a few half-white characters as "white representation" people would certainly scratch their heads. It's just as absurd as calling it black representation. I like that mixed raced actors get so much work in the industry, but I don't think that it should be in substitution for casting non-mixed minorities.

@totaltotal8481

But a show about teenagers and a show for teenagers is a different thing, right? You can tell a story about something without it being intended for the subject of the story. Example: Telling a story about the abuse or murder of a child without this story being intended for children to hear/ see. Just because you are an adult, doesn't mean those kinds of stories aren't still important for you to hear, because it shows you what happens to others and children/ teenagers in those situations and helps you to deal/ protect when someone like that is in need of help. If I remember correctly, Euphoria is meant for a mature audience, so people 18 and up, so all the teenagers watching it do it on their own accord and not because the show is recommending them to. Teenagers and children always watch stuff that's not intended for them.

@@tiddlesletoitoise It's not, the show isn't for teenagers to watch, it's rated TV-MA. Euphoria shows abuse and children as well, there is no difference. This was never a guide for teenagers to act as it wasn't intended for teenagers to watch anyway. Now that teenagers watch it anyways is a whole different topic, but that's not the fault of the show and is the same as teenagers watching horror movies and playing video games with 18+ ratings. But that's not the responsibility of the show.

Well to be fair I think shows like Gossip Girl and PLL can honestly be worse, those two shows quite literally glamourise being a rich powerful mean girl who's nasty to others or people they think are lesser than them. I literally was using my granddad's birthday/Christmas money to buy designer dresses, and would start to mimic Blair Waldorf or Alison Dilaurentis's behavior. It wasn't until I started coming up against real life versions of girls like Blair and Alison and realized that actually these rich popular girls are actually really horrible and awful. And I want nothing to do with them.

I really does sound exploitative and glamorizing… though reading through the comments here, I agree there’s a place for more graphic media like this but it’s definitely with mature audiences and not the (seemingly) very young audience the show seems to have. it just gets so complicated because what kids watch depends largely on their environment and shouldn’t be the responsibility of an artist who wants to create a work and yet… (I don’t have an answer to this, it’s an ongoing and nuanced discussion still)

I actually love her story because of that. It was so refreshing to see her become and feel sexy as who she is without losing weight and having a glow up of sorts. She sure leans the other way too hard and I'm sure there will be consequences for that, but I also kinda love that this adresses a bigger issue with beauty standards. We act as if being white and skinny is where beauty is at, but I remember a quote from ContraPoints about a society that likes to jerk off to you but not giving you human rights or a voice. It's interesting how our perception of different media is dependent on our own lives/situations! In my case, the entirety of the show is so distant from anything I've ever experienced that it comes across as way more surreal than anything else, which is only amplified by the show's aesthetic. I also find it interesting how you say it's basically devoid of humor. In my opinion -- which is probably heavily influenced by how surreal the show is to me -- the show has this morbid kind of humor to it. It sort of lies on the very border between comedic and tragic, which is very amusing to me (one of my all time favorite shows is Hannibal after all). For instance, about Rue's comment on Maddie "being in control" with this older guy. It comes across very sarcastic to me and not to be taken seriously. However I do realize that how you perceive the show very much depends on your own maturity level. I was 21 myself when the first season aired, and I agree it's a show about teenagers but for an adult audience. I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing, though. They rarely look or act like teens, so I kept forgetting they were supposed to be high schoolers. But of course, I guess it's kind of problematic when actual teenagers romanticize the actions and relationships in the show
@ATD-uc3lb
@ATD-uc3lb 2 жыл бұрын
As a fellow Hannibal lover, I love everything you say. As a Junior in high school, I can say that my life is similar in some aspects to Euphoria, but some are definitely a little outlandish. I definitely haven't experienced pretty much anything that any character goes through in Euphoria, but some events are pretty accurate. The characters who were most relatable to me was Kat. I'm not overweight, but being short and stockier, it is very difficult to really understand that people will still like you for you, and not because of your appearance. Ethan and Kat's relationship was the most accurate (at first at least. I didn't like when Kat turned into a cam girl and kind of a bitch) to my life. I'm not super skinny and feminine and the ideal girlfriend. But people that were in my life this year taught me that people like me for me, and that gave me more confidence. I liked Kat in the beginning. I like that she realized that confidence was most attractive, not weight. Ethan's persistence and Kat constantly finding ways to push him away because some part of her thinks theres no way he would like her is very relatable to me. Whats not relatable is the Cam-girl thing, in my opinion. But it is accurate. There a girl I used to be good friends with who made an OnlyFans recently and Ive never been more repulsed by it in my life. I think the moment Kat is Skyping a guy she can't see and he's asking her to take off her clothes is when she realizes that the Cam girl life isn't what its cracked up to be and that was another great moment of this show. The male characters like McKay, Daniel, Nate, and Ethan are all accurate. Though I haven't met someone as vulgar as Nate, the worst I've seen is a kid in my grade beating the shit out of a freshman girl because she made a mean joke to him. Ive had mostly Ethans in my life. But McKay and Daniels are the most common in my opinion. Guys like Daniel are everywhere--the guys who you think are nice but turns out to only want sex from you. I went on a little tangent. Some things do weird me out in this show. Every time I watch it, I think I get the most uncomfortable when Cassie orgasms when she's riding the carousel--that was extremely weird. And yes, it is kind of dramatized and exaggerated a bit. But I think most of the characters are accurate, and some of the events--especially Jules meeting up with random guys and being too naive to realize when she's putting herself in danger--are pretty accurate to what a lot of kids get up to. I don't do drugs or vape, but I know a lot of kids who do and one of my coworkers started getting high when he was 13. Another one of my coworkers--who is 14--made a sexist comment about women belonging in the kitchen. None of the other girls said anything, but I just laughed at him because I wanted to show I wasn't bothered by those comments. That he can try to demean us, but can't do anything because he's the one cleaning the dishes--not us.

We are grown adults and you may like it or not depending on personal preferences. I do think the problem here is the show targeting young people. Zendaya shared in a post the other day prior to season two premiere "I do want to reiterate to everyone that Euphoria is for mature audiences". I do hope the show make a change on how they target their audience so that important message is loud and clear. I personally like the show. @@taylorparis6094 Because this stuff doesn't just happen when teenagers/ young adults leave their homes to go to college and be on their own for the first time... this kind of shit happens right under everyones nose while teenagers still live with their parents and that's the scary part about it. How parents and home life influence the f-d up shit teenagers go through and how most teenagers think that high school is the rest of their lives: Everything becomes either too important or you don't think about what will actually happen after you graduate high school and don't care at all (in regards to relationships and drug abuse etc).... College kids, while most being lost atleast think about their future and therefor act differently and have different sets of responsibilities and a different mindset. That is the reason. Euphoria in college while certainly being able to deal with similar topics, would be a vastly different show. A lot of the problems and the way they are depicted are specific to the teenage high school experience. The point is that all of the characters, even if they want to act like adults, are in no way able to really grasp the consequences for their actions, because they are not adults, which is way many of the disastrous situations in Euphoria even occur. Don't get me wrong, a Euphoria type show in college would be great and the issues that could be discussed there would be interesting, but it would be just different. I always thought that Euphoria as a show was meant for young adults fresh out of high school to actually reflect the f-d up shit they went through in high school and work through that. As it is was never intended for teenagers to watch, to think Euphoria is meant as a cautionary tale to people in that age range is wrong to assume... Euphoria isn't preventative, it's a tool for reassessment and understanding... but that's just my opinion.

So this might be controversial but i don't think the question should be "Is it okay that this (or any show) shows sexuality, nudity, violence, whatever". Yes it will influence younger people but so does everything else. For me it wasn't all the sex and violence in tv shows that damaged me but actually the lack thereoff. I discovered my sexuality quite early but growing but with Disney and Nickelodeon, it was almost never shown. Kids my age or older than me apparently didn't think about sex. Noone apparently had a sex life. My parents are also conservative in that area, so it was a taboo to talk about it. I felt so dirty and disgusting. I'm 24 now and still have issues with repressed sexuality. I wanted to see kids my age have sex because it was something i was interested in myself. Of course not everyone feels comfortable with that, so not every show should do that. You also don't have to show everything. Have some sex scenes, skip others. Diversity is the key here. Showing a lot of good and bad things can actually help distinguish these things from each other. But one show can't show both if it doesn't fit into the story.

I don’t think the show was saying that it was okay for Maddie to be assaulted, moreso that she, while knowing it was wrong, just didn’t care. It’s how she approaches a lot of things, she knows that her parents only wanted to protect her from being molested, but she still was upset about not doing pageants anymore. She knows that she should be working hard in school and aspiring for a career, but would rather be arm candy to a man who works for her. And she knows Nate is an abusive and unloving partner, but she keeps going back to him anyway. I think Euphoria could still do more though to explain why Maddie is so attracted to things she knows isn’t good for her. Cause it doesn’t feel like Cassie’s case, where she’s looking for validation or something to fulfill her, but more like she doesn’t think her life will ever go anywhere so she’s doing whatever she wants right now instead of thinking at all about the future. Anyways I really liked this video, and I too have a deep appreciation for Cassie and think she’s one of the most interesting characters on the show.

Like holding up a mirror to them and saying: Hey, this might've been you in the past or someone you know, this is how things like this can happen and why it's a bad thing, you realize it now? At least for me, I watched it when I was 19 first and the aspects of drug abuse and the really messed up relationships and abuse made me realize why and what people I knew went through (not always in the extremes but bad enough) while we were in high school.

When the show first aired I was 16. And I'm 19 now so my thoughts and feelings on the show have definitely changed over time. One thing that hasn't changed is that I strongly agree with you on the fact that the excessive nudity is unnecessary. I feel this way about most movies and television shows tbh. Especially after watching the season 2 premier and seeing how with certain characters (Rue and Fez) they avoid nudity and depict situations without it. Where as with other characters like Cassie for example nudity is almost always involved if that makes sense. I too believe the show lacks diversity and hope we get to see more of Lexi as she's my favourite character and the one I relate to most as people have always depicted me as an introvert and quiet. I’ve never seen this show, and I don’t want to, but I love watching your take on things even if I’ve never seen them and thus wanted to comment on Rue and Jules and why I think those types of co-dependent relationships are unhealthy: Because when these relationships inevitably fail, people fall apart in ways that takes often so long to recover, if they even do. Some people even go so far as to threaten to hurt themselves (or actually do) to try and hold on to the relationships because they have become so dependent on them to even function. No one should be seeing these kinds of relationships and think ‘couples goals’. People should see them and realize that, while it’s of course okay to love someone, you can’t truly love anyone if you don’t love yourself first and foremost. Your significant other is meant to be the icing on your cake, not the entire cake. Side note: the whole “I did this because I love you/did it for you” crap annoys me to not end, especially if the thing they did was positive. Supernatural shows with vampires often have male vampires being nice to please his human love interest when it’s like: do it because YOU want to/do it for YOU, not for me. That’s how you know something is real. (Sorry for the vampire analogy, but it immediately came to mind 😭).

the point of euphoria is to make people uncomfortable it's to make people realize what kids are going through like i get that it's played up a bit for like the dramatization of it but it's showing how teenagers feel rn and how they think that their lives are playing out

@@SerenaSkybourne exactly! I assume the high school setting is chosen so that writers don't have to think about giving their characters larger outside issues to deal with such as work stress, bills, housing anxieties, etc. But setting the show in university would accomplish the same thing, be much more interesting, be more realistic, AND make us all much more comfortable lol

@@ashellebee Agree with more shows in college, this is desperately needed. I'd love to have more shows deal with serious issues people in college go through. Disagree with setting Euphoria as it is in college improves on the story or make it more realistic. As you said, bringing Euphoria to college means the characters have different issues than they have will being in high school and this changes the story a lot not just its setting. Just because there are many shows in high school already? doesn't mean the writers should change the story they wanted to tell (especially since it's based on real experiences the show runner went through. Also isn't the discomfort kind of the point?

As a teenager I can confirm that things like those in the show do actually happen to a majority of teens, like starting to abuse drugs, nudes being leaked.. It is not as extreme obviously, but it really does show the struggles of teenagers nowadays. And as someone that watched skins when I was just 14, euphoria was really nothing. I don't think the show glamourizes drug abuse, it actually shows you the bad sides of it and makes you not want to make choices like the ones that characters in the show are making.
@ATD-uc3lb
@ATD-uc3lb 2 жыл бұрын
Rue glamorizes drug abuse, not the show, and that's something that's really interesting to me. I really like the scene where Rue is banging on Fez's door and screaming at him to open it and he doesn't. I think it was super powerful because the audience sees how volatile and desperate Rue was over getting drugs. Before it always showed Rue's point of view of when she was high and the pretty lights were swirling. That was her glamorizing herself. But this scene showed how drugs can really fuck up your life and make you do awful things to people you care about
@Luna-pi9zz
@Luna-pi9zz 2 жыл бұрын
@@ATD-uc3lb That was one of my favorite scenes as well, because of the raw emotions we see and it accuratly shows the way addicts act when they are in a drug crisis. Also the scenes where Rue and her mom are fighting hit really hard because of how accurate they are. I have a friend who is like Rue, shares her beliefs about life and drugs, but she, thankfully, went to rehab and got clean, so most of these things are familiar to me. Rue's aware that they are bad, but she doesn't care because she can't imagine life without drugs. It's important that Rues drug addiction started when she was diagnosed with ocd, anxiety, bpd.. and needed to take meds so her brain could "function normally" which created an addiction and she just moved on to harder substances as she got older.

I went to a watch “party” at a friends house for the premiere of season two. My gf and I never really dove into it before so we started watching season one and I really.. wasn’t into it. I mean I’ve seen skins. I’ve seen degrassi. I’ve seen girls. But euphoria was the hardest to watch for sure. There are so many triggering scenes! Why!? I mean Jules and Nates dad made my stomach turn, Cassie and MacKay was painful, and I had fully skip past Jules backstory when she asked the psych ward employee to leave the can of soda behind... it’s unnecessarily gruesome. I don’t want to watch Rue potentially kill herself over and over. I don’t want to see portrayals of kids being abused on screen. It’s trauma porn at its core and while hard to watch, it’s also hard to look away.

I’ve heard so much about Euphoria but I don’t think I could stomach watching it. I watched GOT and had to always skip the graphic scenes. Euphoria actually reminds me of a show that was popular around the time I was in high school. Secret Life of the American Teenager. That show was definitely tame compared to what I heard about Euphoria. I only watched a few episodes but I remember girls in my high school wanting to be like Amy and getting pregnant as teens.

I definitely agree the show would be more ‘appropriate’ (i use that lightly) if the characters were in college or older teens or very early twenties. The show is also rated TV-MA, so it’s not for high schoolers at all. I think more people would enjoy it if they were a bit older, also like… they don’t need to live at home or have parents?? So, do you just want them in a high school?? I do personally really enjoy the show, but I totally agree with that.

i was in my late teens/early 20s when skins first aired and i remember being so uncomfortable with some of the sex stuff on there. and compared to euphoria skins was basically Teletubbies. honestly, i try to ignore how young these characters are supposed to be when i watch it. helps that most of the actors look like their actual age anyways. it's so weird that i'm creeped out by teenagers doing graphic stuff like taking drugs and having sex cause when i was a teenager i was taking drugs and having sex so it's not like i don't know that that stuff (and worse, lbh) is going on at that age. maybe i'm just becoming a prude in my old age lol

Maybe I'm very naive or something because I realise most people critisize euphoria for the nudity, but I just figure there were several shows before euphoria that did the same, but we somehow were okay with it? Like, gossip girl comes to mind, but unlike those shows, euphoria makes people uncomfortable. I was just assuming that's intentional, but maybe I'm naive and I got it wrong. I agree with you in the sense that I experienced life as a teenager like you did, when I was 14, my 15 year old friend did cocaine for the first time, (I'm from switzerland and we're not poor or whatever, it's not legal and I'm mentioning it because cultural context might be a factor, our age of consent is 14 I believe, but the law around it is actually confusing for americans to understand, we don't exactly put an age limit to it but age difference) so the thing I'm getting at is, that same friend a year later bullied my 16 year old friend for still being a virgin and all in all, she got out of life fine, but drugs and sex were a thing long before we all turned 18. I very much relate to the characters in euphoria. The thing is that I like about is most is that they have this very real sense of discomfort to them. I point it out to everyone but the sex scenes in euphoria aren't romantic. The first sex scene I remember is when Jules has sex with Nate's dad and that's so uncomfortable to see. Kat loses her virginity and is filmed while having sex. Maybe I'm getting it wrong, but I thought that was intentional. Wasn't it gossip girl where the underage girl is starting the flirtationship with a teacher, which is framed to be kinda tragic because it ends early? maybe it's pretty little liars, i don't watch these shows but I remember seeing a part of it and it's like-Euphoria is a show put on TV in a time where everyone is starting to talk about consent and is critical about the age where these people have sex. We have several videos on youtube, all released in the past year, that discuss the sexual undertones from Victorious, a kids show. We're just very critical of minors being sexual in any way and I think the fact that sex is uncomfortable to see for these teenagers, that has to be intentional, Jules is blackmailed for sharing child pornography as a consequence for sharing her nudes, Cassie gets an innocent man beaten up and imprisoned for having revenge sex with him, Rue takes drugs and she falls back and forth with her addiction. I'm just kinda convinced that this show is very harsh commentary on sex and drugs within teenagers during a time where everyone is critical about it and the fact that people boil it down to "but they really inspire people to copy their make up and style shows that teenagers are influenced by this show" seems so much like virtue signaling to me.
