The Korean People's Navy is full of small and outdated ship, and nowhere near as powerful as the navies of South Korea and Japan. But it actually poses a bigger threat than many people think - we explain why.

While the DPRNK's navy is dangerous for those who venture close to shore, they are not that dangerous to those with a modern navy that can operate a few dozen miles from the coast, especially if they have air assets. I would say that would not be effective against escorted convoys. Most have to travel surfaced (easily detected by air assets using IR or radar) for much of their patrol and they are loud by modern standards. However, they can be a very real threat to unescorted commerce vessels. HI Sutton has some really good material.

You seem to have some misunderstandings: -Submarines are mediocre surveillance platforms in the modern age. An E2C operator stated he detected the surface scarring from a Italian submarine periscope at 200 km. One can imagine how much better a radar would perform against a vintage design, or the post-processing capabilities of a more modern AWACS. -The advertised top speed on a diesel-electric attack boat drains the battery extremely quickly, usually less than 2 hours on modern designs. This is why the low top speed on a smaller submarine, while still a drawback, is less concerning than you would think at first sight. -India operates SSBNs but does not have MIRVs; they have not achieved Teller-Ullam staging and still rely on pure fission or boosted fission physics packages, which makes their nuclear devices fairly bulky for a given yield compared to thermonukes. India is reportedly behind Pakistan in terms of nuke miniaturization, and it seems entirely plausible that North Korea will achieve MIRV'd SLBM before India does. -If China is involved, then the KPAN is completely unnecessary for cutting off supplies to South Korea; much of South Korea's port infrastructure is directly within range of Chinese rocketry, and then there's the potential for air/sea delivered naval mines, and it should be noted that the Western nations have fairly limited mine-clearing capacity compared to the Chinese ability to lay them. -If China is not involved, then the ability of the KPAN to harass South Korean or Japanese shipping for any serious length of time is extremely dubious; I expect a SK/US/JPN coalition to effectively annihilate most KPAN units within 2 weeks. Other comments: -Romeos are garbage, way, way too loud... but at least newer than Taiwan's subs LMAO!

Enjoyable presentation. Thankyou for it. . Pukgeukseiong 1 has a very similar profile to the American Polaris missile. That is not to say it's a copy necessarily. It could be the dictates of the most efficient form fitted to underwater launching. Having been first worked out by the USA, this basic form would apply to all similar devices. This in the same way that certain modern bombers, the Soviet and U.S. space shuttles, diving bells, and other specialized performance tech have common shapes according to the demands of physics involved in the capability to be achieved. . I suppose it is a close copy of the U.S. made Polaris. It would make military sense for the DPRK to do so if able.

@@M16_Akula-III Yeah I saw that, thought it was kinda cool. And it probably is some Soviet torp Made In DPRK with more locally sourced ingredients. But I haven't been mocking their tech for a while. More of a rocket guy and their current ICBM Hwasong-17 is an extremely impressive machine. It's way beyond bare minimum requirements. By copying a rather complicated and advanced Soviet engine and rocket they've taught themselves how to build some really fine rockets. Staged combustion engines as oposed to open loop engines for instance is something the West would never use on an ICBM. Barely any US orbital rockets have staged combustion engines and if they are made in Russia (RD170 on Atlas V, just retired, about 10 rockets left mostly launching made by Amazon Starlink (Kuiper). They're SLBM's follow a more traditional approach with solid fuel rockets like Minuteman or Trident or the Space Shuttle boosters. We haven't used liquid fueled engines since Titan. The need to launch 25 Mt weapons went away and smaller systems with lighter payloads could do the job like Minuteman. It can do 3 x W76 or W88 or a few variants based on those two (100 kt and 500 kt respectively). I forget but I think about 1.5 ton payload, so it could put a decent satellite in orbit. Russian land based ICBMs tend to be in the class of medium lift orbital launchers... 10-20 t payload on the latest monstrosity with expensive liquid closed cycle engines. It's mainly because of them we insisted on 10 warheads max per rocket in treaties. Some of them could carry 40 bombs in theory. NK went the latter route. H15 was decently large, 100 t or so one dual nozzle engine based on RD250 (if I remember) and about a ton payload for ICBM range so about comparable to Minuteman in performance though of course it's handled like an orbital rocket with fueling procedures, engine ignition sequences etc... while solid booster are more of a light the fuse an run away type of deal. Not that good performance but it's a weapons system not a satellite launcher optimised for cost per kg to orbit. H17 was a bit of a wake-up for some less rocket enthusiastic people in the West. 2 improved engines of the previous type, triple the weight (300 t) and about 3 t payload to Washington and beyond. The last bomb they tested was pretty fancy too. So much so they shared images. We can estimate it weighs about 250 kg with a maximum of 500 kf but that would be absurdly heavy, it's not that big. Pretty tame fusion stage. Basically Made in glorious DPRK W76 but more low tech but more fusion fuel for a bigger bang. Fusion fuel is cheap as dirt, plutonium is expensive and an h bomb doesn't use anymore of that than a regular atom bomb. So H17 can probably do 4-12 bombs each. Depending on wht the true performance of the rocket and weight of the warheads is. Plus reentry vehicles add some weight too. Probably 8 is reasonable. And countermeasures which are inflatable warheads painted to reflect radar like the real ones. The Navy is far behind the rocket division but who knows what Putin might share for some 155 mm shells. Kim has enough of those to give each citizen one or two. Too bad they aren't edible.

The NKN presents some serious maritime threats to other regional navies and commercial traffic. The NKN has torpedoes and mines which have proved to be problem for the ROKN (sinking a corvette) and the USN (damaging a frigate in the Persian Gulf). NKN antiship cruise missiles (ASCM) and short-range missiles present a credible threat as well. The inventories of NKN naval weapons are considerable with torpedoes and mines being a large fraction of the naval stockpile, but the missiles becoming a growing threat. While the mine warfare (MIW) portion of the NKN arsenal may appear to be obsolescent, the USN’s shrinking mine countermeasures capability is making it more vulnerable to offensive and defensive MIW. The failure of the USN to maintain a credible MCM capability worldwide makes the NKN a greater threat to US and allied naval forces operating near the DPRK.

KPAN can certainly take advantage of nuclear-thermal-electric generators. It would be cheap and easy to do, and one such might let this machine power itself without reference to the batteries should she be at station-keeping or on the bottom. The Yugoslav design coastal (SSC) and midget (SSM) submarines were some interesting designs. One feature of both types of submarines was the use of electric-only propulsion for the main drive. This appeared to be a backward step in submarine propulsion yet provided the Yugoslav Navy with much quieter small submarines. Other Yugoslav submarines of coastal and ASW types had standard diesel-electric propulsion systems but their designs were optimized for the Adriatic operational threat environment. The Iranian naval forces of both the IRIN and IRGCN also employ designs derived from the Yugoslav, Italian, and DPRK navies.

Unlike the United States, China has the capacity to assist her allies in outfitting their militaries with highly advanced weapons systems in relatively short order. Many nations in the Asia-Pacific that have previously been aligned with the West will either side with Beijing or remain neutral in the event of war erupting between the super powers. A coalition is building with China at the head and it won't be limited to the so-called 'pariah' states like North Korea, Pakistan and Iran but a number of African, South American and Pacific nations. The writing is on the wall, for those who have eyes to see.

Similar to North Korea's asymmetric strategy, it would be better for Taiwan to approach to that kind of strategy. Taiwan can enhance its armed forces by developing and building littoral/shored defence assets such as modern coastal defence submarines, fast missile boats, fast minelayer boats, mobile shore-based anti-ship missile systems, aerial kamikaze drones, combat drones, surveillance drones, mobile artilleries (MLRS), decoys, and most importantly layer ground based-air defence systems.

Based on the relationship between distance and national strength, it is extremely foolish for Taiwan to compete with China for military industrial productivity, especially drones. 90% of the world's drones are produced in China. According to a recent message from the US military to the US Congress, China's shipbuilding capacity is 232 times that of the United States. China's industrial production capacity accounts for 60% of global industrial production capacity.

I would not be surprised if N Korea is inspired by Russia’s 100 megaton torpedo. Like Dr Strangelove said in the movie “Dr Strangelove” when weight of the nuclear bomb is not a delivery problem, then there’s no limit to how large it can be.

Estimates are 100 megatons with additionsl weight dedicated to create a highly radioactive strontium 90 cloud with a half life of 60 years. it could be much larger than 100

@@douginorlando6260 Livermore Lab designed "Gnomon" a 1000 Mt bomb that Teller wanted to use as a primary for a 10 Gigaton bomb. It could set all of France on fire. And you can go bigger. He once designed one of unkown size with a deliver system noted as "backyard". Meaning it would kill everyone on Earth so there was no point in carting it around. Much of this was in a talk creatively called "Bigger Bangs" where he presented Gnomon and "Sundial" the 10 Gigaton bomb. Most of it is unfortunately still classified.

Its interesting that a country this poor would rather let its citizens starve in order to support a half assed sub fleet. As you said, this fleet, save two or three serious boats, is more of a danger to itself than the more professional navies of South Korea, Japan Australia and the US. They can cause problems but likely at their own peril.

You've been brainwashed by western media. NK are not starving but due to American sanctions, they don't have fast food like McDonald's and KFC either. Which means they're not fat group of people like the West. If you use your intelligence, starving people do not produce anything. But North Korea produces a lot of weapons. They even have hypersonic missiles, something the Americans don't have.

This is all very interesting, great video! That said, Romeo & Sang-O submarines are so noisy we can hear them in San Francisco. Any naval engagement between the KPAN and the US Navy would be over by lunch time. The dissimilarities between North Korea & the US forces make it so that after a couple of hours, I’d predict that very few NK ships would even leave port because they’d only be destroyed within a few minutes.

@davidmurphy8190

No, the windows on the upper forward section of the ROMEO Class SSK sail are to provide a place from which to conn the submarine while running on the surface. If you look carefully at the ROMEO Class sail you will see the protective shield for the periscopes, snorkel mast, and other sensor masts. This was done by Soviet submarine designers to protect those extensible masts against ice while a ROMEO was at periscope depth. The PRC-built Type 033 were considered by some naval analysts to be better than the Soviet-built boats.

Take a look at whats happening in Ukraine at the moment. Are we really trying to suggest Russia is less capable than N.Korea? N.Korea's military is of course a threat but thats like saying anyone with a rock can be dangerous. Modern weapons systems are always developed with lessons learned from the older ones and usually specifically to better them. Thats why some of Russias best helicopters are being taken down by handheld missile launchers from the ground. Any weapon which is next gen or more than its counterpart will hold a massive advantage. Thats not to say there would be no fight but the reality is that sooner or later its only going one way.
