I just bought this grinder and it’s a beast. So far so good. Crazy fast. I definitely feel like I can tell a difference in the taste with it. I feel like the taste is better and more well balanced. Current grinder is a Baratza Sette 270wi. If the timed dosing doesn’t work for me, I may switch to the W 65.

Been waiting for this review since I saw it on your channel. I've got this recently too and yes it has been such a great addition even to the Pro. I used the built-in grinder and boy the difference is so big (but of course, you pay for it!). Couldn't agree more with the points you made especially the light ! I only knew about the light when I first turned it on and was looking for a switch for that. But soon I found it so useful, as you said in the early morning or winter when there is less sunlight. I also use the light for my puck prep so that's such a nice unexpected feature.

Are there high-end weight-based grinders? The best I know of is the $600 Baratza Settle 270wi which has 40mm conical burrs; not comparable to the Atom 75. Also: 1) Thoughts on putting SSP or other upgrade burrs in the Atom 75? 2) Retention? 3) What's the declumping system for the Atom 75?
@JoeyVaracalli2 жыл бұрын
Yeah there are definitely some high end grinder that do that check out the Mahlkonig E65S GbW I also believe the eureka luca does that as well. I’m not sure if you can find a set of 75mm ssp burrs you may need to special order that but honestly the burr set in here is very good not sure it’s worth upgrading out of the box. Retention was pretty low but it’s not a single doser so retention doesn’t become as important I really don’t recommend this grinder for single dosing. Unfortunately without taking apart the machine I can’t get super specific but this is whata on the spec sheet. “Patented anti clump/static system delivers light, fluffy grounds”
@CrookedNose21312 жыл бұрын
I agree completely with your comment about time based grinding. Another factor that affects the output is the amount of beans in the hopper. The weight of output varies wildly when you compare a full hopper to one that's almost empty - or at least it does on my Baratza Settee.
@JoeyVaracalli2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I have noticed that even when today my shot ran way faster when I had less coffee in the hopper even though I had the same dose Ruffly
@claystore Жыл бұрын
That's why I tend to keep my hopper full most of the time... keeps things more consistent (or at least it's one less variable).

What is your daily grinder now? I’m thinking about getting an Atom 65 now that I can get one for about $900 US, and use a dosing cup. Or just splurge to get the W 65. Ceado has some nice ones, but their cheapest GBW I think is like $1,800. Though they do have a 3 year warranty I think.

I have a close sibling of this one, an Atom 60 (which I bought used at about half the price). It isn't as fast as the 75 but still fast enough (roughly 1g/s), gives me great coffee (coming from a Rocky which I suspect was defective), and is indeed very silent. I strongly suspect the entire Atom line gives the same experience, save for speed. It does makes me wish I had a single-dosing grinder of the same quality. You can't really do single dosing on the Atom, there is significant retention (I throw away about 6 grams of stale grounds from the grinder on first use every day, and on every change in coarseness), and it doesn't grind as well (or as fast) when the hopper is empty (I keep as little coffee as possible in the hopper, just enough to fill up to the base of the conical section). Also I removed the fork and put the portafilter on a scale (itself on an improvised stand). The grinder's timer is set to give me approximately the right amount minus a couple grams, and then I complete with manual pulses (works for me on the slower 60, I guess on the faster 75 you might have to use the single timer set to a very short pulse). This gives me great accuracy with minimal effort and no waste. Overall I quite like the Atom. Maybe some day I'll swap it for a DF64 for the flexibility of single-dosing. But if you only every drink the same coffee (or just one bag of coffee at a time), then it's fine.
@JoeyVaracalli2 жыл бұрын
Yeah the df64 is great too but I think we are splitting hairs between the atom 60 and the df64 although the df64 is almost certainly cheaper depending on where you live. You can always get an even smaller single doser like the lagom mini
@jmsaffroy2 жыл бұрын
@@JoeyVaracalli I got my second-hand Atom at about half the price (350€) of a new unit (650+€), making it slightly cheaper than a new DF64 (400€). At the time I was not even sure if I needed a better grinder, so I figured buying used meant I could resell later with limited loss. Now I know that a better grinder did help me, so I'd be more inclined to buy new and to pay for the benefit of single dosing. Also I wonder if I could consolidate all my grinders (the Atom I use for espresso + the Rocky I now recycled for filter) into one DF64, meaning the DF64 should let me switch between grind sizes several times a day (think filter coffee vs. espresso) without having to dial-in the espresso or open the grinder for cleaning each time. This way I would save in kitchen space, and reduce the amount of money trapped in my coffee gear. But regarding workflow, I'm not even 100% sure if it would be a win over keeping two grinders! :D

For one thing, that grinder is a stepless grinder. The other thing about that grinder is like any other time base finder or even the weight bast grinder. They will always be off the phone setting up the coarse or fine. That is the nature of all grinders.

Yeah most time based grinders is significantly higher but that’s kinda my point on the eight based grinding. I will say though most single doser leave about .1 grams behind so .2 really isn’t super terrible all things considered
@Thetache2 жыл бұрын
It is a commercial grinder so it is functional but ugly and very expensive for a home barista. It really is overkill for home use and also it doesn't really make sense, for home use a single dose grinder makes much more sense as at home you are far more likely to be swapping coffees and having to dial in so the retention will be a big waste of coffee when changing. The strengths of this device are all based around speed and consistency in a multi shot commercial use with one type of coffee.
@JoeyVaracalli2 жыл бұрын
Yeah pretty sure I said most of what you said in this comment. It’s a great grinder but not really great for home use since it’s so big and really requires coffee in the hopper all the time
