I agree. Every shot was drilled in with precision and yes it looks rather Wagnerian. The only downside was the after shock when English fans torched German cars in near trafalgar square . It was a dispicable act of mindless thuggery and it was back to square one and the old chestnut which some call 'The English Disease'. I was almost arrested that night and my crime was just to 'a cheerful German' . The coppers said to me : 'move on or we have to arrest you for your own safety'! Tounge in cheek they call it. I just call it bitter. The title holders Germany crashed out in russia BUT i am not bitter. Seems a regular route for grand title holders anyway ie France in in 2002, Italy in 2010, Spain in 2014 and now us lot BUT as Arnie would say "I or rather WE'll be back". Good luck with colombia tomorrow amigos.

To be fair on England, they didn't do too bad, only missing one after like what, 6 shots? That's very decent
@dcvbhtrdf7 жыл бұрын
+Anon P lol Because England's penalty taking wasn't looked at as bad back then or even immediately after this as they did well in this shootout, not "didn't do too bad"....before this shootout their record was won 1, lost 1 so it's not surprising they took the first 5 really well, particularly as this was for a place in the final to be strong favorites to lift the trophy. They weren't looked at as a bad team in general or one that wasn't perfectly capable of winning major tournaments. Penalty takers such as Shearer, Platt & Gascoigne never thought they'd miss so back then England were guaranteed to score at least 3 out of the first 5. Pearce & Sheringham are more reliable than unreliable under enormous pressure so that gave them a good chance to score all 5 before sudden death which they did quite comfortably as it turned out. Against most other teams that would've been enough to win, I think TonyAdams should've taken the 6th though, many people say Ince and also many people say Anderton & McManaman but if I was to choose the 6th myself it would've been Adams the captain (that's out of what was available having not made any substitutions but if I were the manager I would've made some subs in the game for starters but especially if it's approaching the end of the 120mins I'd bring on LesFerdinand & Fowler just to take a penalty instead of Southgate and probably McManaman or Ince as they weren't brave enough to put their hand up to take any of the first 6).
@josephd.27256 жыл бұрын
To sum it up, both teams were right about equal all the way, every penalty expertly executed except for one stinker that cost England the match. It's sudden death and up steps a novice like Southgate with a pathetic attempt at that level when they had better options. Then up steps Andy Moller, a highly experienced captain to score like a boss. Strategic error. England lost because of having someone like Southgate take a penalty, who had no business taking a crucial penalty.

@@josephd.2725 It wasn't as bad as Zola's which Kopka saved even more easily which was just as costly to his nation in these championships. Zola was as experienced as Möller if not more experienced and obviously very talented and it was a worse pen than this from Southgate. CzechRep only drew their last group game with Russia but even if they'd won, Italy would've still progressed instead with any win vs Germany but the penalty miss meant they only drew and were eliminated.

Euro 96 was the most amazing thing I've ever experienced. We had the Italians, French and Dutch up in Liverpool and it was pure magic. I've never been a massive fan of international football, but this tournament was special.
@vikramsoondur6891 Жыл бұрын
The quality of the football was nothing special, though, for the most part anyway. Euro 2000 is remembered by and large for the absolutely stunning quality of play that characterised many games. To date, there hasn't been a better European Championships.

Something to be said about most of these successful penalties is the long run up and being hit with power. I'm really not a fan of the whole hop, skip and a jump, or lots of pitter patter steps. Just put your laces through it!

Too many players don’t want to do a Baggio. But the best pk is upper 90. The second best pk is a roofer that isn’t up the middle. Anything at medium height or low is in danger of being stopped if the goalie guesses right.

As a kid, I remember Southgate's name the most because of this miss. To be fair it was not the worst penalty in the world but over the years I come to believe he completely skied it. Penalties taken by the other players was exceptional and gutsy, maybe Southgate's shot was a bit too safe. Anyway you have your chance at redemption and wish you the best of luck!

+squifurgie Never noticed how skinny Möller was, you really notice when he's doing that gay celebration how tiny his arms were, considering he wasn't that tall either he must have been very light weight, surprising he was allowed to have the career he had, players should've just bullied him off the park, not allowed him to have the ball to creative things, just out muscle him.
