Update 2021: The VW Golf PHEV is a variant of the Golf. Some additional tests and checks have been done to ensure that the rating of the Golf, tested in 2019, applies to the hybrid variant.
Euro NCAP performs a series of crash and safety tests on car models:
a frontal impact test, the car impacts a rigid barrier
an offset frontal impact test, 40% of the width of the car is striking a deformable barrier
a pole test, the tested car is propelled sideways into a rigid pole
a side impact test, a mobile deformable barrier impacts the driver's door.
A series of pedestrian tests are conducted with different impactors, adult and child head form, lower and upper leg form and whiplash tests are performed on a sled.
Active safety is tested based on the car’s equipment: autonomous emergency braking systems (car to car, with a pedestrian and a cyclist target), lane support and speed assist technologies and seatbelt reminders.

Ok guys, for those of you curious to know how it managed a 5-star even when the rear door opened in side impact test at 2:02, I'll attempt to explain. So first, let me list out the protocol that EURO NCAP follows in such a case. You can also find it on their website. *Protocol:* _When a door opens in the test, a minus one-point modifier will be applied to the score for that test. The modifier will be applied to the side impact assessment score for every door (including tailgates and moveable roofs) that opens. The number of door opening modifiers that can be applied to the vehicle score is not limited._ Now let's see Euro NCAP's comment in Golf's crash result pdf. You can find this in the pdf on their site, at the very end of the adult occupant protection section and just before the child occupant protection section. *EURO NCAP'S comment:* _In the side barrier impact, protection of all critical body areas was good and the car scored full points in this test. However, during the test, the _*_rear driver's side door opened and the car was penalised for the risk of occupant ejection that this represents._*_ In the side pole impact, protection of all critical body areas was good and the Golf scored maximum points in this test._ Now let's look at EURO NCAP's scoring system. I'll roughly describe how it works, and you can verify the same from their protocol pdf on their site. *Protocol:* _The total score in the side barrier and pole tests together is limited to 12 points and the total score for far side occupant protection is limited to 4 points. The individual scores (after modifiers have been applied) for the side impact test (max. 16 points) and the pole test (max. 16 points) are summed and scaled down to 12 points and combined with the far side score to produce the total score._ So this means that the lateral impact score we see in crash result pdf 15.5/16 consists of three tests: the side impact test, the side pole test and the far side test (if you are confused what this far side test is, it's nothing but an evaluation of the risk of injuries to those sitting opposite to the side of car which is struck in the side impact test, so if the driver side is struck, it evaluates the risk of injuries to the passenger sitting next to him/her). The side impact test gets a score out of 16. The side pole test also gets a score out of 16. The scores obtained on these two tests are summed, and you get a combined score for side impact and side pole test out of 32. Now this score has to be scaled down such that we get a score out of a maximum of 12 points. This score is finally summed with the score of far side test in which the maximum achievable points are 4, bringing the tally to a total of 16 points we see in the crash result pdf for lateral impact. I know it's very confusing but that is how it is. Let's see what this means in practice. The crash report says that the golf got a perfect score in side impact test, so 16/16, but the rear driver side door opened, for which a penalty of 1 point was applied because only 1 door opened, so it got 15/16. The report says it got the maximum score in side pole test, so again 16/16. Now we sum the two to get a cumulative score of 31/32 points. This score has to scaled down such that the maximum achievable score is 12. 31/32 = 96.875% 96.875% of 12 = 11.625 So we finally have a score of 11.625/12 for side impact + side pole test. Now, we add to this, the result of the far side test. Since the crash result pdf says that the final score for lateral impact is 15.5/16, we can deduce that the golf got a score of 3.875/4 in far side test, which brings us to the total of 11.625+3.875/(12+4)=15.5/16 seen in the crash result pdf. Given that it scored 95% in adult occupant protection because it got 7.5/8 (frontal offset) + 7.6/8 (frontal full width) + 1.7/2 (whiplash) + 15.5/16 (lateral impact) + 4/4 (AEB City) = 36.3/38 = 95.526% which was rounded off to 95 for adult occupant protection, it managed to get a 5 star rating because it scored more than the threshold of adult occupant protection (80%) to be eligible for 5 star rating. Currently for a car to score a 5 star in EURO NCAP, it should score more than the following in the respective areas: 1. Adult occupant > 80% 2. Child occupant > 80% 3. Pedestrian/ Vulnerable Road users > 60% 4. Safety assist > 70%

Tip: You can also check ANCAP's crash result pdf of Golf to get a better visualisation of the scoring system. It is quite a bit more detailed than EURO NCAP's crash result pdf.

You really made an impressive study for your answer! Nevertheless, not being able to hold the backdoor closed should result in a far worse total number of points. The evaluation points system fails in my humble opinion.

2:02 The door opens. During an accident or when the vehicle rolls over, the leg of the passenger sitting behind can get stuck and seriously damaged. How does Euroncap ignore this and give 5 stars?

This was addressed in the comments of the original video. Someone posted a statement or article, but i haven'tgot the link. A feature of golfs (and most cars these days) is doors locking once you pull away and reach 10-15kph. Apparently during the crash test, the car was not running and moving under it's own power so the doors didn't lock as they normally do and hence opened in the test

@@MattVLRocks Thats true - but as far as I know the doors will be automatically unlocked if an Airbag is deployed. This should make it easier to rescue the persons out of the car.

Car wasn’t running, didnt lock the doors during impact, like every car does to prevent that ( they get opened afterwards)

What’s next… car wasn’t running so the airbags didn’t deploy? Back seats usually hold are most valuable treasures… the VW excuse… smells a little like emissions… and NCAP, a little like FIFA. It looks like it smells… terrible

Это все конечно здорово, что, безопасность автомобилей поднялась на довольно высокий уровень, но, в большинстве случаев, водитель успевает нажать на педаль тормоза, и в такой ситуации, показатели будут иными.

@@erebostd cierto, pero en el resto de coches pasa igual, y como norma general no se les abre la puerta. También es cierto que en las pruebas de crash test, se aseguran que las puertas estén bloqueadas, al menos la NHTSA así lo hace, con las puertas bloqueadas.

Impressive AEB but there's still a risk of being rear ended if a car hurtling behind has no similar emergency braking! We can only mitigate and not totally eradicate accidents, I guess 🙄

Side airbags are smaller here than in the 2012 model. Not good for evolution.

@@tomhummel2641 absolutely! There’s the possibility you get into the car and someone straight rams your door. theres even the possibility that an aircraft might slam down and hit you. In both cases the door would be unlocked and you won’t wear your seatbelt, which is quite bad. What I’m trying to say: you can’t condsider everything, you have to find a middle ground between security and comfort, or else we wouldn’t drive cabrios and hatchbacks but tanks. As long as the frame holds up, and the most impacts are well protected (ncap gave this car a very high rating) I’m good 😊

Don’t blame the car for the opening of the rear door. It’s a 1 in a thousand thing, it’s not normal it just sometimes happens when the door latch breaks.

Very poor, the 10th gen Civic not only has better crumple zone and oedestrian safety but does it all whilst having a superior stiff bodyshell and the door doesnt sling open from deformation!

Trust me the Lane Assist is absolutely Aids. I'm driving everyday with this car cause I'm driving Instructor. I'm always switching it off. Very annoying System. Brake assist is good. Gets sometimes triggered for no reason but okay. I use this car for 5 Months now and it was 7 times broken. Always problems with the electric. VW itself is not able to fix it. Trust me don't buy this car. The driving feeling is great but the electric isn't. Sry for bad English meine Freunde.
