Had a great afternoon Euro Nymphing wild brown trout on an Eastern, PA limestone stream. It was a few days after the streams were flooded from Hurricane Ida. The fish were spread out and the make up of the stream had changed from the flood. A lot of sandy, washed out areas and debris throughout. The fish seemed to be stacked in certain areas.
Most fish were caught on the bottom fly which was a size 16 olive krystal flash perdigon. The blowtorch in a size 14 accounted for a few more, as did a gasolina perdigon.
I give some helpful tips as well.
Enjoy!

Great video Corey! You made a great point that I had not previously considered, about casting nice and easy and not overpowering as it may send shockwaves down the leader. I think when I tuck cast I tend to overpower in one of your next videos perhaps you can elaborate on your nice and easy method for a tuck cast. I really like your YT channel the videos very informative, I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge. Thanks good luck out there

Hey hey Corey! Great day, I was there little over a month ago in the morning for Tricos, got skunked, only saw one fish rise and water was about half that flow, guess the storm got them outta their holes and on the feed. Great job! Was out this evening on my local stream, water a little high and off color, just perfect, fish feeding everywhere. Often great fishing after a storm, just gotta time it right. You hit it perfect 👍🏻. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Cory! When we met this spring on Penns and I told you where I lived, you mentioned this creek. However, I didn't know you had videos here. Just seeing this one now, and saw your one from a couple winters ago the other day also. Took me about all of 5 seconds into each video to know exactly where you were lol. Cory, your video is awesome buddy. As you know I primarily fish for largemouth but dang you make this look so fun. I noticed you throwing to the left just before you cast is this done to get all the slack behind you as you cast? I hope that made sense. Big thumbs up on this video👊👊👍👍
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum 2 жыл бұрын
It is a blast! Really appreciate you watching and commenting! When I throw to my left, I’m doing a water load cast. So, I am throwing my flies behind me, to left which was downstream. This loads the rod with the water so I can propel them forward. The reason was - the canopy from the trees above me and behind me wouldn’t allow a backcast or a traditional overhead cast. The water load makes it easy when you are in those situations. Thanks so much, bud!

Hey Cory what material do you like to use for leader? I've been using maxima but don't really like it that much. Thanks Scott
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum 2 жыл бұрын
I use Pezon & Michel. It’s a French made mono for Euro nymphing. Sempe is also one I use as well. It’s easy to find Sempe. These monos are thin, yet strong and extremely supple. With zero memory. I’m not a fan of Maxima. It does have memory (even though you can stretch it out) and it isn’t supple at all. U.S companies are still really slow on coming up with mono specifically made for Euro. Most use Maxima because it’s what is available. Hope this helps.

Excellent video and some solid fish in there! I have been wondering about nymphing at distance lately and I was wondering about what distance you are fishing out to? I guess in general what distance would you say you can successfully nymph to before you start just inevitably pulling your flies out of the current they are in?
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jeremy. Appreciate it! It really depends on rod length and depth of water and type of drift, length of drift. This day I was fishing with a 10ft rod. With that rod you can effectively fish up to about 22-25ft away in depths that are 2 1/2 ft -3 ft on a up and across drift. If you are fishing straight upstream and back to you, you can cast 35ft and fish up to 3 feet of depth (or more). If it is a foot deep riffle, you can fish 35 feet or more on an up and across drift. There are a lot of variables in play, but the drift will always tell you….if it starts sliding back toward the rod tip, you know it’s either too deep or too far. If you have a longer rod, you will always get more distance. Most people do the usual up and across drift, but the more you fish ahead of you, you can always fish farther away. Hope this helps.

Great video as always!! 1 question? Does your euro fly line go out the rod tip? Thanks
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mike!. 90 percent of the time, it NEVER leaves the rod tip. I use a very long leader, so I can keep the fly line in the rod (usually the lower half), so I can have the fly line in my hand for easier handling.
@mikerapeer4848
@mikerapeer4848 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the quick reply. I was trying to make your micro leader but I think I might have made it to short then. I made the butt section 14’ and the sighter 4’. Should I have made the butt section longer? I currently use the trout bitten mono leader
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum 2 жыл бұрын
Depends on your rod length. On my 10’9” my leader is approx 24-25ft to my tippet ring. My 10 ft rod it’s about 23ft. That includes leader and sighter. That’s why I like a micro loop at the end of my fly line. It’s so easy to snip off a few inches to get the length where you want it.
@mikerapeer4848
@mikerapeer4848 2 жыл бұрын
Ok thanks think I got it figured out now. I have to redo it to add more to the butt section. I use similar rod lengths 10ft and 10’6. Appreciate your help

Howdy Cory.. been practicing my cast with your techniques I am improving... especially handling slack line. I think I need to lighten my leader system. Does not seem to be very tight... I I am using 15 feet of 15 pounds maxima ..6 feet of 12 pounds maximum ...and 4 feet of 8 pounds white colored mono... then couple feet of Sighter I think 4x ....attached to tippet ring ...Can you give me a micro leader formula that works thanks Dave from PA.... Love the show
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum 2 жыл бұрын
Appreciate you watching, Fudd! I use 2 different leaders depending on what rod I’m using. I use mono that is the diameter of 5x (about 4 pound test) for my 2 weight. And mono that is 4x diameter (about 5.6 pound test) for my 3wt. The heavier leader formulas are more “old school” and aren’t needed with today’s modern rods. Contrary to what people say, light leaders are very easy to cast. You will pick up massive benefits by going lighter. Sempe is great leader material. It is mono made for Euro rods. If you went with 20mm Sempe (3x) to a 4x sighter, you will have one heck of a Euro leader. Once you start liking this, you can go thinner.
