Shallow Pocket Water Nymphing can be an absolute blast!
Join me as I Euro Nymph a small PA stream in springtime. Learning to fish fast-flowing streams and pocket water will help you put more trout in the net. It's the type of water that a lot of anglers pass up and/or struggle with. Whether you are a seasoned angler or a beginner looking to up your game, this video can help you master this water.
Once you learn to fish it correctly, you will find how much fun it is!
The fly of the day was a size 16 Culiroja perdigon (Spanish Bullet). 80% of the time I fished a single 2.5mm bead.
Hope you enjoy it!
Tight lines!

I live in Monument CO and this time year we get a lot of breezy days so I watch the forecast for days with slower wind speeds as fishing is much easier. Are you directly ordering the Pezon & Michel line from Europe? Any suggestion where to order? I am in Canada, if you could suggest where I could order the same line, I'd really appreciate it. Another great video Cory! I noticed you were using an extra long leader (ie no euro fly line in your guides). Any advice/reasoning for using extra long micro leaders vs a length where you have some fly line in your guides? Are you moving more towards a full micro leader mono rig? Thanks again for these videos-Dustin
@OldDominionTroutBum

Hey Dustin. Thanks so much! A lot of times I’ll start out with a longer leader if I know I’ll be casting light bugs. It shoots them out with ease that way. If I start out longer, I can always shorten to my liking. I would rather do that instead of adding. Hope this helps. Appreciate you watching!

Speaking of a standard fly rod, how do like to attach a tapered leader to a WF floating fly line? I see videos of “Pros” saying “Cut off the welded loop on the fly line and tie a nail knot”. Thank you Corey.
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum 4 ай бұрын
@@Vectorp47 I don't loop to loop. I will just tie my leader directly to the loop of the fly line. The loop doesn't interfere because it is outside the guides when casting. That being said, there is nothing wrong with a nail knot. Has been and is always great.

A few months ago on a local river i ran into a couple of ladies who moved from PA to Utah. I had to ask why would they move to Utah for the fishing. Turns out they also like to ski. Just curious. Why don't you capture the fly line under a finger on your rod hand once you make the cast? Thanks.
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum 3 ай бұрын
Hey TL. Sounds like those ladies made a great choice! If you watch my videos, you'll see I put my line under my finger quite a bit. But I also use the "Vector Retrieve" (which is what I am doing)...especially in this type of water. We need to get in contact right away and sometimes that split second it takes to put it under your finger is enough to lose contact. I've actually done a video on the ways to manage your line. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r3zai5hnlK19lacsi=2a4brIuLqQjYXT94 Hope this helps. Appreciate you watching.

Jason, it is situational. When bugs are popping and the fish are spread out through the column then that’s when the dropper will get a lot of action.

Thanks, Pete! I have done a video on my setup. You can watch it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lX3WeXR6rMqfaJosi=mRUFwRyuwIfTWQg- By mono rig-if you mean Troutbitten's mono rig...I have tried it long ago (before I even knew about TB-just a different variation). Personally, it isn't for me. Modern rods today are too good and that leader is really made for older rods that weren't engineered the way euro rods are today. For beginners and straight-up nymphing, I would always suggest 8lb test to 3x sighter instead of the "mono rig". Hope this helps. Btw, It's George Daniel's...Charlie Daniel's played "The Devil Went Down to GA"!

Hey, you forgot to list the stogie you're puffing on. You know, once you're finished, the USFS states you should bury that at least 200 feet from the stream and 8" down. 😆 Once, while on a dive trip to Cozumel, I went to the local cigar shop. Said 'Give me one whatever-it-is that Mr. Castro smokes'. I choked my way through the entire thing. That was the end of my cigar puffing career. Now, I'm just waiting for that errant gust of wind that blows your leader over your cigar. On a serious note, excellent points as usual. If I've learned nothing else, it's that you don't have to pass up on skinny water. Get in there! There's fish to be had.
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum 4 ай бұрын
@jtahoe5672 haha! Castro smoked the strong ones! And does it count that my cigar kept going out in the rain?? Haven’t lost a leader to one yet! That skinny water this time of year is where they are at, especially on those low cloud cover/rainy days. It is fun water to fish. Appreciate you watching!

Fantastic video like all the others Cory. I consider that piece of water one of my primary training grounds so I lit up when I realized what you working lol. Such a wonderful piece of water. Couple quick questions regarding the bullet just out of curiosity. That’s one of my favorite flies and tie more of those than any other. Mostly because it does everything so well (easy to tie, gets down quick, looks pretty, etc) but also for a couple sentimental reasons. Never heard ‘culiroja’ before tho and was wondering the history/translation of that. Never really have found too much info on the Spanish bullet and my bilingual skills are sketchy at best. Also when I tie 16 or larger, I’ve ended up just using thread and small black wire rather than stripped quills just because it seems its getting harder to find good quality quills. When a certain company came out with them recently I got all excited. Although now readily available, seems like the quality is 50/50 unfortunately. I also make a tiny variation by tying those on curved Czech hooks with inverting beads. Just love the look that gives. Just wondering how you tie yours. Probably overkill on questions over a simple perdigon style fly lol, but much like the water I do love that fly. Love what you do and how you do it my friend, thank you. Keep it going
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum 4 ай бұрын
Thank you, Severin! Glad you enjoyed it. It is a beautiful stretch. "Ciliroja" in Spanish means red butt or red ass. It is one of the original perdigons. Seems appropriate... Quality quills are becoming harder and harder to come by. I simply use thread and rib it black to make a thread quill and it will give you the same effect. I tie my Culirojas the way the Spanish tie it. 2 different ways: UTC black thread for the body and red flashabou for the butt. The second way is using red Glo-brite for the butt. One is a subtle flash and the other is fluorescent. Mostly silver beads but I will have some copper beads as well. I'll tie them in sizes 20-14. It is a staple perdigon in my box and it is a proven fish catcher all around the world. I appreciate you watching and tight lines, my friend.

Thanks Cory, I was wondering what diameter tippet you use in a day to dat basis. I was wondering if your takes and drift were altered if you used a 6x, 5x or r 4x flouro tippet ? Thanks much
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum 3 ай бұрын
Rjf, day in and day out, I use 6x-7x. The thicker you go, the more your drifts are altered. If you go thicker, you have to counter it with heavier bugs. For most waters, 6x is a great tippet to use. Quality 6x is a lot stronger than most people think.

@rjf1877 oval casts are highly inaccurate. It is a myth that you need to do it. Cortland sighter has colors that pop compared to Sempe. For pure casting, Sempe is superior.

@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum 4 ай бұрын
Thank you, Chris. I'll be coming out with a video on that in the near future. In the meantime, it is really based on a few factors. I'll use a 2wt if I'll be casting 2.8mm beads or less (80% of the time) and using a lot of 7x (and occasionallly going to 6x). If I am fishing heavier flows and using a lot of 3.3 mm beads and larger and/or getting a heavy dose of larger fish, I'll go with the 3wt. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
