Күн бұрын

Spent a beautiful October day euro nymphing for wild brown trout on Spring Creek in Central, PA. It saw a lot of pressure that day (as it usually does!). It was sunny and the flows were super low and clear. A lot of fish were tucked up against the banks and in areas where fisherman were ignoring.
The bug of the day was a size 18 natural Walt's worm with a copper bead. I fished this by itself. Spring produces smaller fish on average, but they can be picky with all of the pressure it receives. Going to a single fly in tougher conditions is extremely helpful, as it gives you the perfect drift.
Hope you enjoy and tight lines!

Cory, thanks for all your help through these videos (the tips you sent me were great). Today was the best day of fishing for me ever. Caught over 20 trout and 10 of them were huge (for me) of over 17” all on the euro setup. I had to stop a few times because I was overwhelmed…ended the session early. I never imagined I could have this much fun.

Excellent tutorial as this video could not come at a better time , as the Northeast is pretty much going through low and clear flows , and should help quite a few guys! Spot on with your assessment on drab flies , single flies, and pretty much keeping it simple! Applied these same tactics last week in the Catskills and found some success! I noticed that your strikes seemed to be 20-30 ft. away. Are you able to keep the line off the water at such a distance? Yet with a rapid flow rate I'm hesitant to get closer. Your thoughts.
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum Жыл бұрын
Fred, I do fish farther away than most. It is in the 20-30ft range. It's a big misconception that it is right under the rod. None of my leader or line is on the water. Getting the drift under your rod tip is ideal but only really attainable when the situation/conditions/depth allow. Most of the time I am fishing back to me. Especially in shallower water. When you fish farther away your drifts are shorter, but that's OK. You don't want to always fish up and across under your tip...if you do, you are really limiting what you can do. Hope this helps. I have a couple other videos that may help: -A casting video -5 things to learn -Micro leader Good luck to you.

Great videos thanks! I have been fly fishing for many years but euro nyphing only a couple. I see you are getting good distance on your cast and 20' to 30' from the rod tip with good drifts with I assume a micro leader. I use a 2wt 10' rod as well and have been transitioning to more micro leaders. The problem I have with a mid weight leader is side drag out of the drift line with low flow when I cast that distance. What is your micro leader formula and I assume tuck casts and lifting the line asap. I am from Pennsylvania as well and I do have success euro nyphing but I am not comfortable using it on a the Bighorn River in MT.yet where I have to throw size 18 or 20's. I know the point fly can be heavy and the dropper can be smaller....just seeing if you have any advice or experience in those heavy pressured, sometimes low flows.
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum Жыл бұрын
Thank you, Patrick! When casting 30 ft on an up and across drift-you may only get a good 5 ft drift. With low flows, if you fish more in front of you (upstream and back to you), you will get longer drifts. I have a video I did on micro leaders and you can see my formula in it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lX3WeXR6rMqfaJo When you cast-you don’t want to lift back up. You want to stop the rod high above parallel. I have a casting video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXrHhqaId554iLs Also in my 5 things to learn video-I talk about casting as well. When you need to fish smaller bugs. I do a couple of things: 1. I will over weight a size 18 (or 20) and have it on the bottom with a smaller lighter bug on the dropper. 2. If they are hard on the bottom, I’ll switch my heavier fly to the dropper and have my smaller fly on the bottom. I have fished some super technical water and one of those 2 usually will do the trick. Also going single fly and really drab on pressured water/low flows helps as well. Hope this helps. Tight lines to you.

Cory, I haven’t watched the vid yet but am sure I’ll learn a bit from it. Are you just using one fly when you are in low water situations? I fish the Gunpowder in MD when it’s low &stick with 2 flies but try to manage my leader & sighter to keep them in the water column. I dropped a rainbow warrior & a prince nymph into a deep pocket the other day. Bam! A double header! More fun than catching 2 white perch on a bottom rig when I was a kid on the Chesapeake. 😂Best,Tony
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum Жыл бұрын
Tony, I am using one fly in those situations-as I did in this video. When the fish are in tight quarters and tucked against the banks/under limbs, etc…you can be more accurate with one fly. Plus get a rock solid drift. But when you fish with 2 flies, it always a blast when you get surprised with that double-just like the Bay (which I did as a kid as well)! Tight lines to you!

Another great production!! Questions, your 3’ of tippet in that shallow water do you submerge that including the sighter so you might have 4’ in the water? When the water is 1-2’ deep? On your euro fly line do you match the line weight to the rod, 2wt rod and 2wt line? Thanks Cory
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum Жыл бұрын
Thank you, Scott! When fishing water that shallow, there is no need to dunk your sighter-you only do that on an up and across drift in deeper runs. In 1-2ft, your sighter angle will be more severe because you need to be fishing farther away (thus more of an angle). 3ft still allowed me to have my sighter close to the surface at those angles. The closer to the surface, the easier it is to detect strikes. Hope this helps. The euro fly line only comes in one size. It is good for any euro rod you use. Appreciate you watching!

@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum Жыл бұрын
Scott-really focus on your cast and get really good at it. Once you become a caster, fishing shallow water becomes easier because most of your fish come from in front of you (upstream) and/or farther away. I see a lot of guys struggle in shallow water because they get too close and are always wanting to fish up and across (standing perpendicular) to the current.
