50% of our success on the water is attributed to problem solving....What bugs are the trout eating, Where are they? How do you get your fly to them?, etc....The other 50% is attributed to what we do before the cast. It can be the difference between an OK day or a GREAT day.
Join me as I fish in Central, PA on a mid-Oct day. As I move through the stream, I discuss 5 things that can help set your day up for success and put more trout in the net.
Enjoy and tight lines!

Approx. 6 months ago, I got into Euro Nymphing. Your channel, all your replies to my questions helped me really got me to the level where now I am comfortable casting and enjoying Euro style. I now can tuck cast comfortably and manage my line. I recently caught a 6-7 lb steelhead on my 10'6" 3wt with 5x tippet. WHAT A BLAST! The water condition was low and clear but I was able to tuck cast into the head of a small deep pool under some massive tree root and to my surprise I hooked up. I give all my credits to your teachings on my setup. Much appreciate it. Just want you to know, when I bump into anyone Euro Nymphing, I always recommend your channel.

I gotta tell you that your videos have taken me from a sub par Euro Nympher to a pretty good one. Really great content!! I literally have notes written down from advice in your videos. I've been fishing the Davidson River in NC this past week and landed lots of Brownies. This river sees a lot of pressure and it seemed everyone else was struggling. Caught so many one day I lost count and that NEVER has happened before to me. It's funny that you talk about expecting a fish in this video. There were spots this week where I expected would have fish and most all of them payed off. I did have a couple really big fish break my line off in the same hole. Was heart breaking as I got glimpses of both and they were personal record breakers. Anyway, keep up the great channel and thanks for the knowledge.

Really nice comment, Jon. Thank you! Glad they have been helping you. If you are banging them in the Davidson-you are getting dialed in. I have fished it and know the pressure it receives. Continued success to you and you’ll get a crack at those big ones again. Thanks so much for watching!

I just want to say a huge ‘thank you’ to you Cory for transforming my fly fishing days on the river this past 12 months, catching wild brown trout and grayling…learning from your collection of videos, skills, tools and tips that you generously share with us all, I now tie all my own simple,small, slim barbless flies (nymphs and CDC dries) and have worked /practised hard on gaining confidence and ability in using and seeing takes on your thin micro leader/ Euro line set up which I now love tuck casting with more precision …and honestly usually expect to get eats rather than just hope to, as I did in the past :) By way of summary, on a recent days fishing on my favourite river, a friend asked to watch while I fished …we walked a bit, picked a spot, read the water and calmly fished the likely lies…he couldn’t believe how much sensitivity /indication the thin 5X sighter gave especially as the first fish that ate was a baby 3inch wild brown trout! we caught well through the morning resulting in a convert who couldn’t believe how many fish there were in that river…I have never had so much fun from my fly fishing as I currently do both on and off the river because I now have clear intent and purpose, and feel totally connected to my minimal set up…thank you for all of that,much appreciated.

Can't get enough of these great videos! Learning how to properly position yourself before the cast is probably the most underrated aspect to fly fishing; so helpful to have you discuss it in so much detail. I always learn a ton just by watching how your angle of approach changes depending on the water and conditions in all your videos. Many thanks Cory!

Great video! I heard on a podcast that youth-team coaches have had members do an exercise where they fish directly (100%) upstream, and learn to manage line and read the sighter from that difficult angle. I've found it helpful to incorporate the exercise into my fishing at times, from directly below the target. Getting used to doing it helps cure oneself of the natural tendency to want to fish across, especially when fishing across becomes a way to avoid the more difficult but potentially more optimal upstream angles. The goal isn't to fish upstream all the time, but to get to where you can choose your casting angle based on what the best approach is, being minimally influenced by the question of which is easier. Thanks again ODTB.

Outstanding content as always. I hope you will consider doing something with the floating the sighter approach to upstream nymphing. Your micro leader can clearly do dry-dropper techniques, but you’ve mentioned floating the sighter in previous comments, which doesn’t work great with 4x and 5x sighter material in my experience, at least not to float for very long or with much weight at all. Both Devin Olsen and George Daniel talk about using much thick sighter material to hold more grease and keep the system floating. BTW, George Daniel has a new book out momentarily that is basically your approach as well, with a few modifications to perhaps even simplify the set up even more. Great minds think alike!
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum 9 ай бұрын
Appreciate it! In my next video, I do float the sighter for a bit. I'm using 5x and it floats lighter bugs for short distances. You can also lay it on the water and just stay a head of it. It's pretty darn effective in certain water types when fishing straight upstream and back. I will definitely do a more in depth video about it in the future. Thanks for mentioning my name with George. That's great company to be in!

Hi Cory, I appreciate your help by making these videos. I am a little confused by your leader setup though. A question...I can't tell from the video, but it appears that you are using a Euro Line (like the one Rio makes and I have) rather than casting all mono. Is that correct? I have been casting straight mono for several months now and have gotten much better at it. However, I still get more tangles than I'd like, so I've been thinking about going back to using my Rio Euro Line. What is your suggestion? And, if I do use the Euro Leader, should I have some line out in front of the tip, or try to keep it below the tip (below the end guide) when casting? Any help on that is appreciated. Thanks for your channel. I started Czech nymphing 12 years ago. I have learned more from you about the Euro techniques than from anyone.

Appreciate you watching and glad the videos have been helpful to you. I’ve done a video on my setup here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lX3WeXR6rMqfaJosi=XtIFOKmARPBMQyhz I talk about how my fly line never leaves the rod tip. It is always in the guides somewhere. If it leaves the rod tip, it will defeat the purpose of the micro leader. Most tangles are due to your casting stroke being too quick. Just slow everything down and I’m sure it will help. Hope this helps.
