Spent a July morning exploring a new, beautiful stream in the Catskill Mountains of NY. I caught Browns, Brook Trout and Rainbows. The water temp was 60 degrees and almost all of the fish were in deep pocket water, with a few in some faster runs. The winning fly was a natural Walt's worm. Size 14 (3.3) and 16 (2.8). Copper bead and silver bead.
Finding those streams that have the right temps can be just as good in the summer as they are in the spring. This was no exception.
Hope you enjoy.
Tight lines!
Cory
Rod: Thomas & Thomas Contact ll 10'9" 2wt. Reel: Galvan GEN 3.5 Leader: 4x to a 5x sighter, 6x tippet

Seen almost every one of your videos Cory and this is one of the absolute best in terms of being able to see the line and sighter on the water......great filming there and the lighting and angle was just perfect to see it exactly the same way you probably did on the water. That's pretty rare and another great video on a beautiful stream & feels as if we were right there with you watching that sighter for the subtle twitch of a take 😀

What sets your videos apart from others in the elite group to which they belong is your play-by-play commentary. You don't just show a person fishing, you allow access to a mind analyzing the situation and making decisions based on those analyses. BTW, I have the same Galvan reel you use in this video and it's the best reel I've ever fished.

@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum 2 жыл бұрын
Appreciate it, Tony! Nice of you to say! If you are getting it here in the States...Sempe in green or yellow for the main leader works great. When you go thinner diameters with Sempe for a sighter, they tend to seem a little duller in color (its still great but it may or may not pop for you). I really like the new Cortland Tri-color sighter. They make it in both 4x and now 5x. Pinks show up really well for me at the water surface. So, I would go yellow or green Sempe to the Cortland tri-color sighter to a 1mm Cortland tippet ring. I think you will like this and the colors will pop for you, especially at the sighter. Tight lines and let me know how it works for you!

Hey Jay. Appreciate you watching. A Euro specific rod is a better tool for the job, but you can certainly use your current setup with the rod you have. Use your tapered leader and add sighter material to it. (maybe 24"). You will have to use heavier flies/split shot to have a better connection to your bugs. This is how most people started years ago before the Euro rods hit the market. Hope this helps.

Cory, was thinking about what you told me a while back about sighter & tippet length. If you are in low water situations don’t you have to that depth to manage a 5’ sighter and long tippet. E.g. I fish the Gunpowder in MD & it’s flowing about 40 CFS this week. Just thinking about what is going to work. Some deep pockets but runs not more than 2’ deep Thanks,Tony
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum Жыл бұрын
Hey Tony. The Gunpowder is definitely one of those streams where you will be better served with a shorter tippet length. 3 feet from your tippet ring at those flows, no more than 3.5. When you hit those deeper pockets, just dip your sighter. Good luck to you and tight lines next time you are out.

I do love to tie flies, as well, and I will do a future video of my box/patterns. I like the same flies in multiple sizes and weights. My nymph patterns are pretty much Walts worm, france flies, perdigons, Blowtorches (or soft hackles) and pheasant tails. I will tie these in different color variations. These flies will catch fish anywhere. I have a few stone fly patterns, like my Stone Pony and some jigged streamers, like my Honey Badger. Also, I have some squirmy worms and mops for some situations. Dries: I like F-fly cdc type patterns. Also, I will tie certain patterns based on the hatch in Comparadun style ( I like snowshoe hare). Great work on these videos - they truly stand out as the best that I have seen for Euro Nymphing. My question is were you using a shorter leader at times here when fishing in closer (meaning shorter than the 23 ft length to tippet ring from your last micro leader video)? I'm asking bc I like your point about the tactile feel of fly line in hand for management but I can't tell in the video if you are handling the Euro Fly line vs the 4X Colored mono at times. I'm wondering if you always fish the long 23ft micro leader and then just handle the 4X mono in situations where your target seam is closer to the rod tip or if you carry/swap multiple leader lengths on the water. Thanks - best wishes.
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum Жыл бұрын
Thank you, Jeff. Really appreciate it! I always use the same leader length. When I am fishing close to me (a vertical sighter), the fly line always starts in my hand then as I am managing the slack, I may end up grabbing the leader. But I always start out every cast with the fly line off my reel so it's the first thing I grab no matter the distance. If it is shallow and the target is close...I'll back off so the fly line is off the reel. This way you know you are putting some distance between you and the fish. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

Thanks for the awesome videos. Really enjoy them and I’m learning a lot. But I have a question. How often do you get hung up on the bottom of a stream? I’m just getting into Euro nymphing and I watched a few videos from kelly Gallup about his method of drop shot nymphing and it makes sense to me. If you’re rig gets hung up, you lose a split shot or two and not a nymph but at least you’re at the bottom of the stream. If you’re fishing run that’s either three or 4 feet deep, how can you tell if you’re near the bottom, if your fly isn’t bouncing along the bottom? Thanks again and tight lines
@OldDominionTroutBum

Appreciate it, Kate! Glad they are helping. You really don't get hung up that much. The reason being is your bugs aren't bouncing on the bottom. They are riding in the lower section of slower water just above the bottom. Certainly it will bounce off the bottom every now and then, but if you feel it...tap, tap, tap, then you have too much weight on. Kelly Gallop's method certainly works and I have used it, but I prefer my weight in the bugs. I have done a video on the top 5 things to learn: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYHQlHSQj9KZY5I I talk about the type of things you are asking. Especially weight and how when reading the sighter if you know you are near the bottom. Hope this helps. Tight lines and good luck!

Thank you, Uni! It was a butt kicker of a stream to wade. I rarely use a wading staff, but I did here. If I didn’t have it, I would have fallen multiple times. Pete, thicker leaders are affected by the wind even more because it has more surface area. Dealing with wind is always a fly fisherman’s Achilles heal. You have to try to adjust and adapt the best you can. Using more weight is a must.

Really enjoy your content. A couple of Question about Euro rigging. When adding tippet to form a dropper tag, do you have the upper tippet or the piece you are adding on become the dropper? And, when your dropper tag gets too short, what method do you use to add on a new dropper? Thanks. P.s. if you ever get to SW Colorado and want someone to fish with, it would be a privilege.
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum Жыл бұрын
Really appreciate it, Jake! When my dropper tag gets to short, I trim it to the triple surgeons knot that was used to form it. I will then take about an 8 inch piece of tippet (enough to work with). Make a 5 turn uni knot with it around the main line and above the surgeon's knot connection, with the longer piece going down to the water. Wet the knot and slide/tighten down to the surgeon's connection and tighten. Cut the upper tag and the lower tag is your new dropper. "When adding tippet to form a dropper tag, do you have the upper tippet or the piece you are adding on become the dropper? " - Could you clarify this a little more? Not sure what you mean.... Thanks for watching and I appreciate the CO offer!

@@OldDominionTroutBum thanks for the explanation. Makes perfect sense. With regard to my other question. When you tie on a piece of tippet with a triple surgeon knot, leaving a piece for a tag at the knot, do you make the tag from the tippet you are adding. Or from the existing running line? Hope this makes more sense. Thanks again. Jake

Such a fantastic video, thank you Cory! I wanted to get your opinion. I think I might be putting too much tippet on. You only had about 3ft of tippet yet you said it was quite deep at certain spots? So is it okay to be further up than a foot off the bottom? I think I may be fishing too deep most the time and missing fish.
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum Жыл бұрын
Appreciate it, Ty! Having a short piece of tippet and a sighter that is 5x, it allows me to dip my sighter in the water in the deeper areas. Most of the time (not all, but most), you want your bottom fly near the bottom. If fish are up a foot an a half or so, I’ll have a dropper on for those fish. This way you are covering 2 different levels. Hope this helps. Good luck and thanks so much for watching.

I think I know what creek this is but I'm not certain. For some reason I could never catch a fish despite how good the water looks. To keep this spot relatively secret can you answer these questions. Is the creek a tributary to Delaware? Is there a trail near the creek that leads up to an old cemetery?

Awesome video. I'm new to euro nymphing and have couple of questions if you don't mind. First off do you change out your tippet depending on depth? And second, should my euro fly line be past my tip on my rod most of the time? Thank you in advance.
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Your tippet should be approx 1.5 times the depth you are fishing. I use a micro leader and I like to stay on the shorter side...3.5ft or so to my bottom fly. This way I can lower my sighter in the water if I need to get it deeper. My Euro line rarely (if ever) gets out of my rod tip. I always like it somewhere in the guides. I have done a couple of videos that answers your questions and more. My leader setup: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lX3WeXR6rMqfaJo 5 Things to learn: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYHQlHSQj9KZY5I Hope this helps.

I rarely see people fishing at decent distances with a euro rig like you were at the beginning. I do it all the time, but it seems to not be very common. My question to you is this. Are you just running from level euro line to sighter to tippet? That's what it looks like to me on the GoPro.
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum 2 жыл бұрын
Matt, I agree. Not many people do it. It is a common misconception that it is short distance fishing. Casting is the one thing that will make everyone better. I run a 23-25ft micro leader attached to a euro fly line. I just did a video on it. You can see my formula in the video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/lX3WeXR6rMqfaJo Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

@@OldDominionTroutBum I agree with what you are saying on that micro leader video. I find myself pushing or punching my cast to get flies where I want or need them to be at times. The longer my leader tends to be and the farther the distance the target is, the more I have to punch the forward stroke. This has convinced me to try a taper and see if the accuracy improves.
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum 2 жыл бұрын
@@mattstewart2750 Matt its not the taper that will help. It's human nature to cast harder the farther we want to go (or casting in the wind), when in fact you just want to be smooth and controlled. I've done a casting video as well and I have done a video on the Top 5 things to learn. It's the casting style that leads to inaccuracy. I always suggest to people to get out in their yard and practice. You get better feedback in your yard than in the stream. Sometimes when we try things on the stream, the fishing gets in the way because we wan to catch fish.

@@OldDominionTroutBum I agree with what you're saying here too. The stupid fast actions of most fly rods produced in the last few decades help form bad habits in my opinion. I started tight lining over 30 years ago with 10ft 5wt rods that were also crazy fast actions. It's been a hard road trying to slow down and "feel" over the last decade, but it's improving.

Solid video. Do you fish any of the big rivers in Montana with euro technique? Just returned from Montana and fished euro but the difficulty I had was on the big water, the fish were so big and water so heavy with lots of near rapids that I had to use heavier tippets than I typically use ie 4x. Therefore, I was having to use super heavy nymphs, 4.5 to 5 mm tung!!! I typically fish much lighter tippets here in the east. 6-7x typically. Any recs?
@OldDominionTroutBum
@OldDominionTroutBum 2 жыл бұрын
I haven’t been to MT, but will be going next year. But I have fished big rivers in other western states (and the Delaware) with strong currents. When I start out at big rivers, I’ll use a 4x micro leader and sighter. A lot of times I’ll start with 6x but will go to 5x if I have to. I feel pretty comfortable on big fish with 5x. If I feel like I need to go to a 3x leader and sighter, I will have it with me so I can always move to 4x if need be. But I really haven’t had a situation where I’ve done that. But using heavy bugs like you did, sometimes is a must. You have to do what you have to do to get your rig down. I was just talking with a friend today and told him the same. I’ve had two 3.3 beads to get me down in some heavy current and had great luck. It’s all situational, so you just have to be prepared for everything out there. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
