Classical music is often referred to as the universal language, and for good reason. Its emotive power transcends linguistic and cultural barriers, communicating directly with the human spirit. Whether you're in a concert hall in Vienna, a living room in Tokyo, or a cafe in New York, the language of classical music speaks to people from all walks of life, fostering a sense of unity and shared human experience.

He used pedal in Bach and came around using it now. Mid life crisis is probably over now thank god

Bach was an inventor, he was open minded and did welcome any improvements on musical instruments and new inventions. I am sure he would adore the Grand. Schiff gives us his outmost personal interpretation - in the moment, he nows the music, it's in his heart and soul, he doesn't need to read it. Bach lives.

Hmmm... I distinctly remember an interview with a (much older) Andras Schiff who said, unequivocally, that he NEVER uses pedal when playing Bach 0:38. Of course, being the Master, he can do what he wants. His interpretations are absolutely brilliant, and I honestly cannot understand how everything is live, everything is memorized, everything is played beautifully and I don't think he's ever made an error.

This is the first I have seen a video of a younger Schiff. I knew still photos of the young man and I know videos of the mature pianist. I have never been able to reconcile the two versions. Finally seeing a video of the younger artist I can immediately see it: the facial expressions are unmistakable.

I have heard a more recent version yesterday. The context of hall is different, in both cases. I like both versions very much, but I think I prefer this one too. I think this one is more fluid. But it can be caused by the fact that the other hall was having much more of echoe. The problem with that, is that you have to play more lightly for the people in the hall, but the microphones are placed nearer then the public.

Gould and Schiff do marvelous performances, Schiff preferring the faster style o& performance, both pianists showing great precision..... and then there is Lang Lang, who prefers a sloppy, stylized, unpredictable and inconsistent version of his own. It’s a pity this fabulously gifted pianist can’t maintain the disciplined concentration necessary to play Bach properly, although he seems to be getting steadily better as time goes on. However, for all we know, Bach might have enjoyed the looser style if he had been able to hear the miraculous sound of a modern piano. One can romanticize about the instruments of the past but if a non-Earthling were to be presented with a clavichord, a harpsichord, a 19th century piano and a modern concert piano, there’s surely no discussion about which would have won the choice.

Compare the theme of the third movement to the Chorale Prelude in the Orgelbuchlein (BWV 615): 'In Dir ist Freude - In Thee is Joy.' I suspect there may be a little more of a spiritual underpinning to this "Italian" concerto.

I always find that young Schiff is the better version. The older he gets, his mannerism becomes saccharine, his playing becomes more self-indulgent (comparing his first and more recent WTC), prioritizing himself & ego in front of the music (check his Goldberg in Albert Hall. Appaling rhythm swings), and his total denouncement of the pedals (however minimal) for Bach is unwise (Here, he's using plenty enough.)
@SeyranAliyev1086 жыл бұрын

@youre100right36 жыл бұрын
He is just as indulgent here imo. He is too obsessed with his own articulations. I listen to Schiff for interesting articulations but I go somewhere else when I want to be immersed in the music. He has no understanding of how to develop energy at all. He disperses energy too much with his articulation choices (which are wonderful in many places but unnecessary in others) and the impression is the music never moves horizontally or reaches sufficient climax.
@Ferien75 жыл бұрын
remsan03 fine, but Bach had no sustain pedal. So, his denouncement of the pedal is not unwise.
@Ferien75 жыл бұрын
Daniel Wilkins false equivalency. Vaccines and airplanes are nothing like keyboard instruments and the need for them is totally different. Bach would likely not have used pedal for his music as the musical styles of the time necessitated it.
