I have and will always love this dear man, Monsieur Rondeau very much for his deeply perceptive performances of music that is dear to every harpsichordist and should be dear to EVERY keyboard artist! Perhaps I am biased because I once enjoyed correspondence with Jean before life became much more pressured, but I adore and value him along with his deeply personal interpretations, undoubtedly fostered by his late mentor Mme Blandine Verlet, whom I was honoured to know in her later years. A very stylistic approach, but beautiful all the same, as is the erudite and deeply sensitive man himself. I love you, Jean!

He knows exactly what he's doing. He is a cembalist, not just a pianist playing the cembalo. Many pianists' recordings feel cold and distant when they play a cembalo. But his modulation, the tiny rhythmic variations,... it's simply wonderful. So lively and emotional.

W 2018 Jean Rondeau był gościem goldbergfestival w Gdańsku/Polska. Grał, oczywiście, Wariacje Goldbergowskie, ale było to wykonanie trochę bardziej "surowe". Na filmie dodaje ozdobniki, a gdy grał w Gdańsku było ich o wiele mniej, ale i tak widać było bardzo osobiste podejście do muzyki. I mała uwaga: Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, z którym związane są Wariacje Bacha, był synem gdańskiego lutnika. Oprócz gry na klawesynie i, prawdopodobnie, organach zajmował się również komponowaniem. Do naszych czasów dotrwało bardzo niewiele jego utworów. Wszystkie one zostały odnalezione i nagrane przez Alinę Ratkowską, klawesynistkę i badacza muzyki, a także dyrektora Goldbergfestival.

You can put this on, listen to it all, re-start listening from the beginning, and so on. It's so wonderful. I've heard many saying that listening to the Golberg Variations is an exercise for deeply accultured music connoisseurs. I disagree. I know nohing about composition, and I don't always listen to classical music. While knowing music and composition sure allows one to appreciate this even more, in my opinion it'absolutely not necessary. To me, one doesn't need to know anything to love this. Just turn up the volume and close your eyes. It's pure pleasure.

Every time I watch this film is the same. It is, for me, the greatest performance of the Goldberg's on a harpsichord in my experience. Rondeau approaches the entirety of the work as if unlocking a mystery that is not really a mystery and taking us on an amazing journey of discovery that goes beyond mere virtuosity and digs into the beautiful grit of Bach. I'm blown away by his performance, and moved to the very core of my existence. It IS that powerful . . . that beautiful. Thank you Netherlands Bach Society and Mr. Rondeau. Just saw Rondeau perform the Variations live yesterday. I discovered him from this particular recording at the Bach Netherlands Society, but listening to him live was a whole other experience. The deep reverence he has for time, space, and order orient the listener within the present. I have never quite had an experience like this where time itself proceeds so slowly and serenely forward, given sanctity like this through music. I don’t think there has been any other performance which has placed me so fully in the sacred present and made me realize how beautiful life becomes through such ordering. The moments before and after playing, Rondeau paused in a deep and profound silence for a whole couple of minutes. He seemed almost reluctant to leave such stillness for the applause that followed- in fact I believe it was the restless multitude that broke him out of that magical aura and warm depth created. That silence was perhaps the most special time of the performance, I can’t describe it…

I too felt this odd experience as I listened on and on. Questions would crop up: this is Bach isn't it? So much rubato! I try to become my usual "attention-deficit self", but I find I am not able to stop paying attention! How could I, when this person's technique is absolutely perfect. All parts are perfectly articulated. Mr. Rondeau renders his Bach with heroic conviction. One must pay attention to those trills, thirds, and chromatic meanderings that are just beyond anything. Yes, oh yes, that's right. It's Bach. I must go hear more of this man's playing.

If I may comment, dear Miss Belk, you've described it beautifully. Indeed, sometimes absolute silence is required in order to bring the _ritual_ to appropriate closure. However, the audience usually consists of folks who are light years away from appreciating this delicate matter. (From mere observation, I would even go on to argue that majority of people don't care about music at all, but well...) At one concert, upon repeated untimely bursts of applause during Schubert's intimate string quintet (d956), I remember the violinist asking the audience directly, _"did the piece bore you so bad that you're eager to get rid of us at once?"_ --- By the way, if you are the cellist on _that_ video, thank you for introducing me to Minsky's waltz. Is it just me or anyone else also noticed that, apart from the great playing of rondeau, the lighting also changes throughout the piece- when the music is more cheerful and uprising, the lights are brighter and warmer and when the music turns sad or depressing, everything becomes colder and darker. Today it's been 13 years since my Father was taken from me by cancer. I always remeber him when I listen to the Goldberg variations. It's a piece about life itself, a full circle which starts with an Aria, and ends with the same Aria, albeit a more pensive one. This young man gets it..the first half is more full of life..the latter after variation 15 are more pensive and Variation 25 is when you know you're going to die and put a bravado before realizing that with all that Life gives you, the tribulations, sadness, regrets, and disappointments..Life is still Beautiful..Bach understood this better than anyone..having lot his parents by the time he was 9, living hardships with a jerk of an older brother, marrying his cousin and losing her by the time he was 35, then marrying his second wife,the second love of his life..losing 1/2 of his 20 children, and working for unappreciative jerks most of his life..Bach understood suffering,but that did not dissuade him for Living and Loving Life. The 30th variation is the best example: a silly song, mixed with a Love song + with different parts of religious songs..that's what Life is: the silly thrown in with the serious, the tragedy along with the triumph, the Love and the Loss..This brings all of that together. That is why Bach was one of the Greatest Genuises Mankind will ever know. I miss you Dad, but as long as I hear the Goldberg's I know you'll be waiting for me.

No it's not, it absolutely sucks no matter how good the performer is. The harpsicord sounds awful compared to a modern concert grand, it even sounds awful compared to my Yamaha Clavinova. Hell, it sounds awful compared to a 500 dollar stage piano. And if the cringe-inducing sound wasn't bad enough, it also doesn't allow for dynamic variation or control over the decay time of notes like the sustain pedal on a piano does. It's a shame that the Dutch Bach Society actively promotes playing Bach's works on harpsicord rather than the piano. They should be pushing for playing it on the best instrument available and wether that's a Fazioli, Steinway, Yamaha, Kawai, Mason & Hamlin, Bechstein or Bösendorfer concert grand is all the same to me. Bach wrote his solo keyboard music for the harpsicord because it was the only available option, e.g. loud enough for public performance and mechanically capable of playing rapid passagework, and there is 0 doubt in my mind whatsoever that he would have prescribed using a piano had fortepianos actually been both mechanically capable + widespread enough in his day and age.

I remember reading (yikes! 40+ years ago!) that some incompetent critic had complained that Baroque music is "sewing machine music," meaning that it was performed with metronome-like rigidity. The elasticity used by Mr. Rondeau is entirely appropriate and necessary. I am grateful to find a good recording with all the repeats played on a good harpsichord. Perhaps the greatest harpsichordist alive; Rondeau has exquisite sense of timing and use of crescendi to bring the nuances and depth of work for the listener, precise and never indulgent but with profound emotion. Such a high barrier to achieve with clavichord/ harpsichord instruments. A phenomenal interpreter.

You can't crescendo or decrescendo on a harpsichord. That is precisely why the piano was invented. But I agree: this is the first time I have heard him play (although I know the GB Variations quite well) and he is a phenomenal player.

@@jeffschrepfer3618 Actually, it is a bit more nuanced than that. You can achive some slight variations in dynamics by pressing more or less. Also, you can give the impression of a crescendo in other ways (eg with faster trills or slight accelerandos).

I don't know how I've not heard of Jean Rondeau. I appreciate his very human, non-virtuosic approach to tempo, which fluctuates and breathes very naturally and gives the music so much charm. He reminds me of Leonhardt in that respect. Thanks to NBS for making this remarkable performance available.

Marvelous playing! One of the few Bach interpretations on harpsichord that I find appealing. His rubato is expressive and makes his playing less mechanical sounding and enhances his articulation. I like his tempos too, not rushed at all. The two keyboard manuals are fascinating to me as a pianist, as this is how Bach composed his work with that in mind.

The sound quality f this particular harpsichord is so beautiful---- gorgeous! However it is so surprisingly appropriate for Bach, especially, this magnificent work. The timbre is also "in vibration" with this performer's particular depth and awe of the work. He understands it---- completely! I must remark on Jean Rondeau's sublime sense of lyricism. Here he has us discover that there is more to Bach than the composer's virtuosically deep, original, exquisitely beautiful sense and command of original chords and chord progressions and counterpoint. Rondeau makes us discover the sublime, ecstatic dimension in the Cosmos of Bach's beautiful, sensuous lyricism, which UPLIFTS THE SOUL!!!! This last, dimension of the Infinite Cosmos is, tragically, so, so, often ignored---- discriminsted against---- by "brainless"---- "souless" Humans, that then, they never discover and make "Spitual/Cosmic Contact with Bach's MESSIANICALLY TRANSCENDENT---- UPLIFT!!!! I never really heard this piece before as I believe Bach would have intended it to be played. Many have attempted it on the piano and organ. However, if the original intent of Bach was to hep with insomnia a more relaxed tempo and minimal changes in registration would by necessity be required. This incredible artist, in my humble opinion , achieves this. Also note worthy is the added ornamentation on the repeats which is only possible on a Harpsichord. Congratulations and most sincere thanks for this great gift.
