From the Teatro Alla Scala, Milan, the conductor Claudio Abbado rehearses with the Opera star Montserrat Caballé and the Orchestra de la Scala di Milano. The film doesn't present the usual televised concert, but rather a film collage that shows what is behind the stage and how the master conductor and the Opera singer face the challenge with passion, nervousness and illusion.

en plus d'un immense talent cette femme était un vrai bonheur de simplicité: c t une des rare cantatrice qui pouvait rire à la fois d'elle même ou d'une situation inattendue. Elle avait l'oeil et l'oreille affûté. Quel dommage qu'elle soit partie pour cet ailleurs. En même temps, il faut être logique, elle avait 85 ans. cela dit, c'est quand même la seule que je connaisse aussi qui garda une belle voix jusqu'à ses 83 ans au moins! quel cran, quel talent, quel audace! Et quelle Voix! merci Madame Caballé. Merci La Superba! Merci Montserrat!

Interesting beginning: Caballe misses the tricky pitch (coming after a "foreign" harmony). What would be a cause of anxiety and embarrassment for a no-name singer is a giggle for a star.

Ms. Caballe was way past her prime when she performed this. In her day she was great. This is a difficult piece for the soprano.

This comment is old, but Mme. Caballe was 53 in this recording. And, it's a rehearsal, so she's pacing herself. "Way past her prime" is an exaggeration. Did you not hear that high C? Right OVER the orchestra and chorus. Not a voice way past its prime!

Sento tanti commenti estasiati... La Montserrat Caballe' e' stata grande, e non si discute. Ma siccome ha un "orecchio" molto fine, comprende il suo errore nell'attacco, e come una bimba, esordisce in un risolino fra lo scusarsi e il nervoso. Ma Abbado, con tatto e tanto garbo la mette a suo agio. Certo, anche se e' solo una prova, il pezzo non si presta a divagazioni e risolini. Confrontare l'accorata, commovente performance di Shirley Verrett a Budapest, sotto la direzione del Maestro Abbado...
