I'm not an engineer, but when I look at this aircraft, I see a relatively large wing area compared to the fuselage which I think accounts for the high maneuverability. Conversely, whenI look at the F-35 I see a small wing compared to the fuselage and I think that thing must turn like a dump truck. Although the Harrier had a small wing area and did well in the Falklands, so who knows.

You're right, it's called wing loading. Generally low wing loading (big wing relative to aircraft mass) gives you high maneuverability. Good for dog fighting. High wing loading is less sensitive to gusts, and the smaller wings have less parasitic drag. Good for low level high speed flight, and stability during ground attack runs. If foreign countries who bought into the F-35 think they are getting something that can turn and burn with a Typhoon, Rafale, or Sukhoi, they are in for a rude awakening... The harrier is a awesome plane, but, I think the worst it had to face in the falklands were french super entendards (could be wrong).

It's also due to the avionics on board, due to the position of the center of gravity (which on this plane can move so that the plane is completely unstable in subsonic flight and stable in supersonic flight) and, of course, due to aerodynamics special design (canard plus delta wings).

davetek490 I have never seen an F-35 flight demo, but I have seen an F-22 flight demo at the California International Airshow in Sacramento several years ago. It was doing things that this Eurofighter wasn't doing in this display I can tell you that. You could see the effect of the thrust vectoring as it almost stopped in mid air and turned on a dime. I understand the F-35 has thrust vectoring also, so that may be a way to compensate for the high wing loading.

guyfihi The F-22 is a very exceptional airframe let down by its fragile radar absorbent coating. I've seen an F-22 demo in person, it's impressive. But just from eye-balling it (from demos I've seen online), the Typhoon and especially the Rafale have it beat in sustained turn rate (natural for a delta/canard config). The F-22 can probably turn inside them initially though - impressive for the heavier plane. The F-35B for the Marines has thrust vectoring, but only in the Harrier sense (for V/STOL only). The nozzle can't vector upwards which is the way you'd want it to point to help pull more positive G when turning. If they wanted to make a great collaborative fighter, they should just take the Rafale, give it two vertical stabilizers bent at an angle, and slap some stealth paint on it. Boom, best fighter in the world.

The Typhoon is the best fighter aircraft in the world by a country mile. The only problem maybe is its small size, which limits the payload it can carry to be a strike aircraft although they are developing ordinance it can carry to be a strike aircraft.

Its easy to be nimble with no armament, but when your loaded with fuel drop-tanks and missiles it wont be so nimble. With huge drag from external weapons and fuel tank it would be hard to keep it at mach without burning through its fuel rapidly.

This is correct. Eurofighter are very silent about how this ground attack/long range suite effects Eurofighter's aerodynamics. It will degrade the performance of the aircraft, but they won't say how much. To the contrary, the F-15 was so well thought out in 1965 that adding conformal fuel tanks either side of the fuselage actually improves the drag coefficient. About time Eurofighter was put to bed for the money sapping tactically incomplete aeroplane that it is.

***** I don't think anyone's saying the Typhoon is crap. I just think it's very expensive for not being stealthy, not having a great passive sensor array, and have specious ground attack capability (as of yet). What the Brits have is a Fleet Defense Fighter, without the fleet to launch it. It's the reason why the Typhoon isn't selling well; no one can afford to have *just* a CAP fighter for that kinda of outlay. I wouldn't call it crap. More like, incomplete.

And where is the proof? None of the jets you mentioned were used in combat. You can't use theoretical numbers and calculations to prove how thing would do in practice. You know what is worse than American propaganda? Russian propaganda. SU-35 probably has the best maneuverability of all these jets, but it's not stealth, and the ordinary dogfight was more important during WWII. We are on the 21st century.

I have seen better demonstrations from F-16 and F-15 in the 1980's than that. No demonstration of tight radius turn or high rate role. I thought this was supposed to be a demonstration of something.
