I have to say, this is completely badass... i really like the idea of using FPGA to replicate vintage hardware, like the NES... and for the suggested $150-200, i'd be more than happy to own one.. the only request i've got is, make some type of desktop version as well for anyone that doesn't wanna have to go all in on a modular skiff just to use this little guy? would happily pay a few extra bucks to convert it into a desktop unit!
@CorvusPrudens3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I actually started the project with a dual-purpose design in mind. The module in the video can actually be powered over USB or the eurorack bus. Unfortunately, this adds a moderate amount of cost and complexity, so I don't plan to keep this functionality in the final design. If it does well though, I'd love to do a special run of desktop-only modules. There's a lot of fun possibilities there.

You need to make this at least $250, it’s important to value the time, personal invest and risk that you’ve accounted for developing this module. In addition, by charging $250 you can support yourself to pursue future projects, build a brand around your products, and cover additional development costs for firmware updates and bug fixes. Anyway, that’s just my opinion. Feel free to message me back if you’d like to talk more of the business side of things!
@CorvusPrudens3 жыл бұрын
If I were selling through distributors, I'd definitely agree. They'll typically mark up around 30%. Going directly through something like Kickstarter though will allow me to avoid that, with the addition of some logistics overhead. It's still something I'm considering, though!
@stefansynths3 жыл бұрын
@@CorvusPrudens If you aren't paying a distributor, then you ARE the distributor. You should pay yourself for that job, not do it for free.

Don't forget Kickstarter will come to 15% take, and you pay taxes too. Sell it for a comfortable margin, you can always lower the price later if you achieve economy of scale or find cheaper ways to make it. But the original will always be a collectible, like the NES.

Great stuff! You can probably charge much more for it, like $250-300 would be a typical price for a boutique eurorack voice like that. Curious what the CV inputs will do, I think that's critical for a eurorack module. Maybe there should be a way to maybe map cv inputs to various midi features that you have now.
@CorvusPrudens3 жыл бұрын
Yes I'm in the process of developing the CV features now. I'll paste what I've written before again here: I think a good approach would be providing a number of different input modes to suit the needs of a given setup. For example, you might want a 4 voice setup with a gate and pitch input per voice. Or, maybe two voices with envelope, pitch, pulse width, and a bonus modulator. Unfortunately, since there's only 8 inputs, you couldn't really control all the voices at once -- at least for now. Maybe I could add an expander in the future.

@CorvusPrudens2 жыл бұрын
Aw thanks so much! As I've played with it more, I've been wanting to expand the I/O quite a bit. My current plan is to have 2 CV and 2 knobs per channel, meaning it would have 5 columns of inputs on the base module. That would put it at more like 20 to 24 HP.
