Euronymous had evil in-your-face riffs, Varg seems to have put more thought and meaning into his melodies and atmosphere. Preference says Varg since he set up a more consistent genre, I’d miss atmospheric bands more if Varg never existed than Euronymous’ contributions

Euronymous was a phenomenal guitarist and songwriter, and there is no denying that he inspired hundreds of bands and countless of guitarists around the world. However, there's something special and archaic about Varg's riffs. They feel sad, forlorn, and like they're centuries old. It creates a better atmosphere overall and it definitely sets up an emotion of sadness and loss for many of his songs. There are some, however, that punch you in the face, like Lost Wisdom's opening riff and the main riff for War. Either way, they were/are both incredible musicians and I respect their contribution to metal; I will say nothing about either of them as people. There's so much fog around what truly happened and the circumstances of the early black metal scene. I feel they were both at fault for what went down in Norway in the 90's. As I said before though, both are incredible musicians, and I believe it is important to separate the art from the artist. Art takes on its own life after it is created, and if it reaches enough people, the art becomes so far removed from the artist that it can be taken for what it is without regard for who the creator was or is as a person. Fantastic video. I just got into your channel and your music. I'm loving both, and I wish you only good fortune and success.

Love him or hate him, Varg is the founder of one man black metal bands. Edit: I can see most of the comments saying it was Quorthon of Bathory that did it first since Bathory was one of the pioneers of black metal. Yet, _Bathory didn't become a one man band_ until in the early 2000s. Bathory also abandoned the black metal genre later on leaning towards viking metal. Varg started Burzum _in the early 90s_ making Varg still the founder of one man black metal bands. Fair and square.

I respect Euronomous for pulling the movement together and creating enough controversy for me to have discovered black metal, and he had a few really good riffs, but ultimately he was a bridge for me to cross over and discover other artists I like better in the scene. I think Varg's music hit deeper emotionally and he's more of a true artist. That said, I will give it to both Euronomous and Varg that De Mysteris Dom Sathanas is one of my favorite black metal songs ever and the guitar, bass, and vocal harmonies together make a masterpiece in beautifully evil music composition.

I was always drawn to Vargs riffs when I was younger but there’s something about Euronymous riffs that’s just sound so archetypal to me. He recorded two albums and with those two records cast such a huge shadow over the entire second wave. P.S. I think the intro to Chainsaw Gutsfuck was actually a Necrobutcher riff. He’s talked a lot about how they used to alternate writing riffs back in the day and how they both made sure that the bass/guitar always got a fair showing in the song.
