I think hard rock is more melodic, more instruments, more fun. Metal is more visceral and attitude, more energy and speed, of course
@Elveheart3 жыл бұрын
Actually I find Metal to be by far more melodic. Hard Rock often consists of repeating patterns within a limited tone range, while Metal riffs vary more often and have more complex melodies, rhythm changes and different tone ranges, often within the same song. Of course this could also be said for many Hard Rock songs and the line might be blurred (even though some music professors could probably exactly define the difference and tell them apart with ease), but this is how it sounds to my ears. Also about the "more instruments" part: Really depends on your subgenre of Metal. There is quite a difference between for example Black Metal and Symphonic Metal. In these kind of videos there's for some reason mostly Heavy Metal, Thrash Metal and if it's an American video also Nu Metal. For those I might actually even agree with you

To quote the late, great Lemmy" Heavy metal IS rock and roll. It's just a different name". Metal is the genre always pushing the musical boundaries of Rock. It's always changing, always evolving. Metal influenced the early Hardcore pun k bands, who in turn influenced the thrash metal bands. It's been taken in so many different directions it's honestly difficult to nail down the relationship from subgenre to subgenre. Norwegian Black Metal has nothing in common at all with Black Sabbath or Judas Priest. Death Metal has no classical music in it. thrash was the dividing line where metal completely changed.

Thanks for this video. I now know what sets the two similar genres apart. It's not the guitar riffs, despite what some might think. It's the drum beat. Rock has a much slower and methodical drum beat, while Metal has a much faster, and in some cases, more chaotic drum beat. For anyone doubting my analysis, rewind this video and watch it again, and pay close attention to the drum beats. It's clear as day. Once you hear the difference, you will never be able to unhear it. And you'll be able to tell the two apart after just a few measures. Going back to my childhood and teen years in the 80s, I guess I kinda realized this as we transitioned from Glam/Hair Metal to Thrash Metal, but never put the two together. Because it got to the point where I wanted something a bit more extreme, and...Faster, than just your ordinary Mötley Crüe, Whitesnake, and Dokken, to something like Megadeth, Slayer, or even Death.
@Ciabattaonions2 жыл бұрын
I like your thoughts on it. Personally, I think what really makes metal and hard rock distinct, even if many people who aren't familiar with both can't distinguish them as easily, is the tone of both. It's like the difference between major and minor in music as a whole. They both have a lot of energy but hard rock almost makes you feel triumphant, while metal feels darker and more aggressive; which makes sense when you consider how both genres came to be, with early metal evolving out of psychedelic and blues rock and being as much a part of the counterculture as earlier bands, and was meant to be a form of protest against the issues in the world, while hard rock was simply just a faster form of the commercial rock that was already around. I might be looking into it too much but I think that's the clearest way to tell them each apart

glam metal was still metal. Glam Metal (Motley, Poison, Dokken, Ratt, and so forth) definitely not in the same bucket as Glam Rock (Bowie, and similar) And then there's bands like Bon Jovi that fit more into the rock scene than the metal scene. Guns N Roses, no longer in the glam scene, but still kind of a rock metal. What about when they changed drummer? Does that change their genre?
@Chicky_Lumps Жыл бұрын
It's really both riffing and drumming styles. Funny because a lot of people associate metal with some kind of harsh vocals, but vocal styles vary immensely in metal.
@xAlexTobiasxB Жыл бұрын
While the drums are a big giveaway that make the difference robvioua, it's not the only factor. The guitar riffs, tuning and vocals are just as important and make it very clear. Maybe not so much in the 1970's and 80's, but starting in the 90's and 2000's it became more obvious: the metal vocals got much heavier (especially in metalcore and deathcore etc) and the guitar tuning became lower tuning which reuskts in a much heavier, darker, stronger guitar riffs (including the bass guitar tuning of course, which also creates a more powerful sound the lower it gets tuned) So it's a combination of all 3 factors combined: Drums + guitar tuning + vocals

in my feeling, I realized that rock has melody and more lively rhythm giving importance to shorter and more direct notes, while the metal is more melodic and the importance for notes calmer and more melancholic! simply makes it have the identity of each of the songs, but what really leaves the artistic situation is that, regardless of style, the important thing is to innovate and not follow a pattern, after all that is what there is rock in general

This is really cool! Hearing the differences as well as the similarities is really intriguing. I think the craziest part of this video though was the difference in the drums of each genre. Rock seems to be more on beat rhythms with not as dramatic fills. Very pleasing to the ear when just straight out enjoying the beat of the song. Metal plays a lot more with the off beats and very dramatic fills and more plays on the beat overall. Very interesting and very cool! I've found that I like to listen to heavier metal music from the late 90s, early 2000s (probably because that's what I grew up with) because I like the heavy chugs on the guitar and often jazzy rhythms, but absolutely love just rocking out to all the classic rock and headbanging to early metal.
