EUROPE/ASIA BORDER! YEKATERINBURG RUSSIA 2020! Ganina Yama: Romanov Family & Boris Yeltsin
In this video we visit the Europe/Asia border in Yekaterinburg which was pretty cool stepping across two continents in one country :) then along with our tour guide Dimitri we went to visit the Ganina Yama Monastery (the churches memorial for the Romanov family), and then we drove to the site where the remains of the Romanov family were found buried in the woods, 2 of the bodies are still being tested now to check whether they are in fact the remains of the two missing Romanov children.
After all this we then took a trip to the Boris Yeltsin Museum in the city which was a great way to learn about how much Russia has changed since the Soviet days and how politics has had such a huge impact on Russian life. This was a busy day where we learnt a lot about Russian life before, during and after the Soviet Union. We had no idea just how much more we were about to learn when we went to visit the 3 Baltic countries and spend the next 6 months exploring them! Check out our other videos which are full of adventure and history, plus it gets warmer so less snow and more sunshine! :)

TKT tip: Russian history is pretty heavy but really interesting so if you visit a museum be sure to get the audio guides in your language (if you don’t have a person to translate for you).

A British couple from just outside London, England. We got married in 2018 and decided instead of a honeymoon we’d travel the world together for a year. We saved money and travel points, quit our jobs, rented our house out and boarded a one way flight. We started this KZbin channel to share our experiences with friends, family and anyone who plans to travel to the places we’re visiting. We leave TKT tips/facts on all our vlogs and blogs to give information to travellers that we wish we’d had before visiting. We hope you find our content useful :)

I liked seeing all the colorful ribbons at the border. The story of that family was so sad 😞 i think we would have to visit when it is a bit warmer 🌞 i dont think i would do well at -2 degrees!

Explorcation it was really tricky speaking about something so tragic as we’re usually really smiley, seemed strange to be so sombre on camera. Russian history is fascinating though!

They are not two different "continents" though, more of a cultural/historical split. Geographically they're the same continent as you can see from this video, there is no separation between them.

Really enjoyed the history lesson, even though it was very sad! Just a thought if you haven't figured this out already, you can get very light weight rubber/crampon style spikes if you intend to do much walking on icy streets/paths. We travel with them in any snow destination, even when backpacking as they have saved us from many slips and injuries 🧡

Russia is cold - this is one of the popular myths portrayed in Hollywood movies. It isn't colder than any other territory with similar climate conditions: latitude, closeness to the shore, etc. For example, Summer in Siberia can be as hot as 30+ºC even though winters may be quite rought.

I feel like this is an odd question, but was that IKEA by the airport!? 😂 I’m curious because it is in Minnesota, and I noticed it in Chongqing, China, and Florence, Italy too.
@TideKnotTravellers
@TideKnotTravellers 4 жыл бұрын
The Map Pinners haha good question - funnily enough it wasn’t, maybe the Russians are missing a trick here 🤷🏻‍♂️ The IKEA is located on the Western edge of the city on the main highway heading West out to the Europe/Asia Border Monument and (after an extremely long drive, Moscow! 😆). Yekaterinburg airport (Koltsovo) is SE of the city. Perhaps that would make an interesting VLOG - where are the World’s IKEA’s located?! 😆😆

I think Boris Yeltsin was mayor of Sverdlovsk/Yekateringburg, then mayor of Moscow and finally president of Russia. And if I remember correctly, Nikolai II were relative of Queen Victoria of Britain?
@TideKnotTravellers
@TideKnotTravellers 3 жыл бұрын
Yes think Boris Yeltsin was mayor beforehand and the Tsars were definitely related to the British monarchy. Highly recommend the Boris Yeltsin museum it was really fascinating and helped us piece a lot of things together that we just don’t get to learn about in our education system.

Yeltsin has been the head of the regional committee of the communist party in Sverdlovsk and later the head of the Moscow city committee of the communist party. This is different from being a mayor or governor. Regarding the relation between Nikolai the II and the British royal family just look here n1s1.hsmedia.ru/2a/49/7f/2a497ff6f3c1156026e160e956c2b272/620x462_1_81878dd053ae899ab0276669e99cafb8@665x495_0xac120003_15196526441562660862.jpg
