In French, ‘Fils de joie’ (literally ‘son of joy’) sounds like ‘filles de joie’ (literally ‘girls of pleasure’) which is slang for sexworkers.

This song is a tribute to sex workers from 3 different point of views in the form of a state funeral (not about his real mum who's still alive BTW and who's not a prostitute) : *First POV is from the sex worker herself, saying how difficult the first time was and looking forward to the last time she'd have to sell her body. *Second POV is from a sex trafficker, saying at least he feeds them and puts a roof over their heads! Why does everyone hate me? He's insulting them saying they're hookers who shouldn't aspire to be models! *third POV is from the police, saying he's gotta do a job right? He's like please find a 'real' job, miss! Finally, the chorus is always the son's POV saying leave my mom alone, she's a hero for everything she's been through. People dehuminize her but I'm a SoaB but I'm proud of her! Check out "Quand c'est" and "Carmen" to me his best songs... Videos are defo worth watching!

Stromae made this album thinking about things that we found in a lot of places around the world. Things like depression (L'enfer), workers (Santé) and Prostitution (this song right ere). And he mixes together a lot of different musical styles and instruments we can find around the world. So...here, he puts together classical well tempered clavier and violins with a funk beat...mixing "american" with "european" style... he also melts hip-hop (verse) with operatic (refrain) ... the verses are made of different points of view (client, pimp, police) ...and the refrain/chorus is the son. So...he contrasts the public vs the individual opinion of prostitution by contrasting popular vs erudite way of making music. Stromae is doing a hardcore craftwork here...

This is his comeback album. He also had a clothing and design company with his wife called MOSAERT. Stromae and Mosaert are anagrams of MAESTRO. As for the people, he's a customer, a police officer, the son and the pimp.

the MONSAERT clothes are as special as Stromae. My son bought a unisex parka, looks really funny. I am an art director and love the Stromae 3D font. It looks like Escher invented it. Don't forget the first second where he put the story of this video "In a fictional country, the State holds a funeral for a missing sex worker" 1:35 : in an interview he said that in this last album, he tried to put different kind of intrumental from different countries in a mix. The goal ?! We couldn't knew from where this intru were from. He's a genius. And the story of this song is so dope. "Fils de joie" (Son of joy) it's a wordplay of "Fille de joie" (Girl of joy) than mean in french "Prostitute". And here it's the tribute of a son about his mom who was a Prostitute so he's a "son of joy" ( Fils de joie). And the fisrt verse is about a Client , second verse the Mac , third Verse the Policeman and the Chorus between is the son of the prostitute. This song was out the "Day of the Women". Here the "Behind the scene" for more info : kzbin.info/www/bejne/m2mTlnluZZmfhMk

On top of everything that’s already in the comments, I would just like to add a detail I haven’t yet seen: if I remember correctly Stromae said in one of his interviews that telling the sex worker’s story from all different points of view, except for the sex worker’s one, was on purpose to illustrate how society doesn’t give a voice to sex workers and doesn’t listen to them enough. Instead everyone judges them, and takes decisions (e.g.: laws) for them, instead of listening to them and their needs, and to actually fulfil their demands. E.G.: I don’t know about Belgium, but I have heard that in France some years ago a law passed that doesn’t criminalise sex workers’ jobs, but criminalises the clients. The intention of this law was to “protect” the sex workers, but, first, it doesn’t make any sense, and, apart from this, there are two negative points to it. 1: Clients are discouraged, since it is now illegal, so sex workers have less work, earn less money and it becomes more difficult for them to survive; but most importantly, 2: the job becomes way more dangerous than it was before, because the clients that still come despite the law making it illegal for them are usually not the “nicest ones”, whereas, before, more respectful and thus safe clients would come and everything would go well. So this puts sex workers in great danger and, on top of this, since they earn less money, they don’t have the choice of refusing clients they consider unsafe, because they wouldn’t survive otherwise. The result has been an increase in hate crimes (violence and murders) committed against them. But society doesn’t care. Sex workers have demanded multiple times for the law to be changed, but from what I know nothing has changed yet, and this awful situation still remains the same. There are a few documentaries on this topic on KZbin but they are in French unfortunately, and I don’t think they have English subtitles, but I might be wrong. Apart from this, excellent reaction video! I’m glad you liked the song and the video, which I really like as well. I also hope you were able to dig a bit more into the meaning.
@Parcimonie_0 Жыл бұрын
Well, this is YOUR very personal point of view about prostitution and laws, it's not the point of the song. In the song, Stromae denounces the hypocrisy of everybody for putting all the blame on the prostitute when she belongs to a system where they all play a role : the pimp, the client, the police officer (Eva Avila). He gives voice to her son, who stands for his mother with pride to say to the word how good of a mother she was, giving him good care and joy (Fils de Joie), despite facing so much violence.
