I’m glad somebody finally talked about this. Blending in with locals as a tour when it comes to shoes is a little bit different. A local are not gonna be on their feet all day like a tourist, so looks over comfort don’t work. When I was in Italy for three weeks, I end up doing more harm to my feet. Who’s gonna be on vacation and not take pictures of everything? One bag carry as a backpack(😂) when I actually got to the airport, I probably saw less than 25% of people with backpacks and that might’ve been outside of the bag they checked in. I tried that on my first trip to Europe in a long time in 2018 it was kind of miserable. From there on out has been a roller bag. I’m also African-American so I get a pass not trying to look like a local. 😂, but I can be a respectful, responsible, considerate American. that’s all that matters.

Great point, making a comparison to trying to look like a local when they are headed to work and not walking 8 miles a day as a tourist 😊. Thanks so much for watching - Cheers!!

This is exactly what I have done, too! My first trip to Italy in 1998, I fretted over what to wear, so I had nicer shoes, slacks, shirts etc. Every trip since, I've realized just how much more relaxing it is to dress for comfort and practicality. One thing I do keep in mind, though, is if I plan to enter a catherdral, mosque, or other place that has their own dress code. Other than that, I dress for me. I will ALWAYS look like a tourist. Nobody is going to mistake me for a local, even since I acquired an Italian passport. I will always be instantly recognized as a "straniero." I've also noticed Italians (and other Europeans) becoming more casual in their dress than they used to be anyway.

100 percent agree!! There is a time and place where you do need to wear certain attire. Otherwise, dress comfortable and appropriate. And, no matter what, we will always stand out as a tourist. Thanks so much for watching 😊

Brian, when you said No, Thanks you to someone and they just want you to take their pic...well...this can be a scam as well. I heard stories where you take their phone and when you give it back they drop it in purpose and make a whole scene. That is one thing. But this is what happen to me and my mom in Istanbul. We were waiting for a sunset cruise and this 12 years old ask me to take a picture of her. And I got up from when I was staying next to my mom and took the pic. She wanted a second one and a third one. I give her the phone back and when I turn around my bag was gone. I knew right away the girl had something to do with it (i worked retail a lot of years and when people steal they usually "work" in teams...one distracts your attention and the other one steals). I start following the girl, she droped her phone, I put my foot on her phone and said she can not get it until she give me my bag. People come around and made a circle around the girl to not leave (she start screemong very loudly to make a scene) and her s older sister finally came there and drop by bag so we can release her yourger sister. And we almost missed our sunset cruise because of this insident. But we made it and got my bag back. So any time someone is distracting your attention, remember it may not be that person that does something fishy but may be someone else with them. Safe traveles. Love your channel.

@@BrianandCarrie I am Romanian (live in Wisconsin) and I first comment on your channel on the Romanian videos as I was in my way back there after 7.5 years in the Fall of 2022. I had a longer visit then and took the chance to visit other countries that I did not have a chance to visit before I more to the US in 2008. Then created other opportunities to visit other places and I just realized this spring when writting a speech for Tostmasters about my traveles that I visit 8 countries in 8 consecutive months (Sept 2022 to April 2022). Turkey, Greece, Romania, Germany, Spain, Danmark in that visit and then this spring Portugal and Dominican Republic. Never in my life I traveles so much and I love it. There is for sure something contagious (in a good way) from your videos as well. You show us over and over again how much affordable we can travel. And as I fully recovered from a serious illness I realized that travel was(and still is) the last layer of healing.

Agree with everything. Also it is polite to move your backpack to the front in crowded situations. As then you aren't hitting people with your backpack plus being harder for someone to steal something from it. I've visited some places where they require to wear the backpack in the front because they don't want people to damage things accidentally with the backpack.

Listen, we’re the land of people in freaking pajamas at Walmart, so folks making “don’t wear” videos need to start HERE! Glass houses and all that… 🙄 😂 And don’t get me started on tight leggings with short tops in public, so prevalent that I saw an 80 yr old in that get-up just last week. At Walmart. Anyhoo, got one for ya, Brian - I wear socks with sandals!! teehee Only when I’m camping, but it’s an amazing combo: toe socks with Birkenstocks! 😉 Great vid and message!

I watched some of those videos you mentioned before I spent the summer in Spain. I totally agree with you, all of the "don't wear this" videos were mistaken as I saw everything you mentioned being worn by Spaniards. Your so right that there is no disguising Americans abroad but comfort is the most important thing.

These “rules” were accurate 30+ years ago, when I took students to Europe. My students didn’t want to stand out as American. I taught them the language and culture of where we went. Their cameras showed they were tourists, but since they dressed like Europeans, no one knew where we were from unless they asked. Far too many American tourists we saw were rude. My students didn’t want to be associated with them. Me neither. Too bad the KZbin videos you mentioned are out of date. -Elizabeth

With regards to the backpack, they really are everywhere. Lots of people are walking to the market for shopping and many use a backpack. Great advice on clothing choices; I've never listened to others about this since it is my comfort and my choice (and yes, they know we are tourists). I tend to chose based on comfort, weather conditions, terrain, packability (compact is better), and washability. Regarding scammers and general safety, I find that many people get caught up in the sightseeing and forget basic situational awareness (like walking down a narrow alley by yourself at night). Criminals are looking for easy to dupe tourists (and locals). When you stay aware of your surroundings, it is obvious to them and they will move on. I would definitely watch as many videos on how to stay safe, which includes where you put your bags when out and about (as Carrie and Brian mentioned), I do always put my money clip in my front pocket, I never stand against the edge/or inside the crowds where performance artists work, my bags are always in my grasp, and I keep my eyes open for anyone following me. It takes no effort once you get used to it, and makes your travels much safer. Thanks for the content!

My tips for long term travel. Get the step in shoes they come in handy for going through the security lines at airports. Pack a weeks worth of clothes and do laundry once a week and pack clothes you wouldn’t mind losing or replacing if you pick up a new shirt sometimes another shirt has to be left behind. Baseball style hats not only come in handy to block out sun but are also good on light rainy days. I also use a hat on a long travel day.

Great information...On another topic, we had our SUITCASE STOLEN while touring Europe while traveling on a bus just last month. The FLiXBus does not tag your luggage and the drivers will leave the luggage doors open during the many stops. To protect your suitcase you MUST exit the bus and watch your suitcase. This is the only way.

Regarding scams. If I need help I want to ask some random person for help rather than taking assistance from someone who approaches me. I figure the odds are a lot lower that the random person I chose is a scammer than someone who approached me. Even though I have offered help to other fellow tourists when I see them having difficulty, which would violate my advice for them 😊

I agree with all you said in this video, except the fanny pack / bum bag / waist pack. ONLY Americans wear them around their waist, if you wear them like you do, over a shoulder, you will blend in; if you wear it around your waist, you are putting the stars and stripes on you back. Many people use backpacks all over Europe, many wear baseball caps. If you want to blend in, wear a shoulder bag / man purse / satchel for the things you are carrying, but a small backpack works as well. Scams: I've had the "I was robbed and if you could just fill my car with gas...." in the UK, the USA, but the best was in France where the guy could do it in five languages! Blending in: I must be doing something right as I have been mistaken for a local several times; also I have had a shopkeeper come up to me and just start speaking in English as well.

First comment! Woo Hoo! More useful content of course. Wear what is comfortable to you. Who cares what others think? You'll never see them again. Don't be obnoxious but be comfortable. Shorts and yoga pants pack well, take up little space and are temperature appropriate. Practical walking shoes are essential unless you aren't walking and wanting to make a fashion statement. I agree. Wear what you like - it ultimately comes down to fashion choices. Having said that I haven’t seen european women wearing yoga pants or baseball hats so wouldn’t do that - but that is just personal preference. Probably because I wouldn’t do that in my home country. Tennis shoes can get hot though - I am interested Carrie in how comfortable your Birkenstocks were for walking? Because European women do wear those a lot. The taking photos v scams really is tough. In the end I became more open to people approaching me as there were many more photo requests than scams. I think as an older woman they just saw me as ‘safe’. Maybe the same with you Brian.
@BrianandCarrie

Yes, always just personal preference and what your comfortable in. My Birkenstocks have been amazing and I walk on average 8 miles a day in them. My first pair lasted 2 years before they needed to be replaced, which I think is really good for the amount of miles I put in them. I now also travel with a waterproof pair, cause the downside is the cork doesn't handle the rain well. Cheers!!

Loving your videos - especially on budget and long stay options and working around the Schengen restrictions. We have usually stayed just under the 90 days but our next trip will be longer and slower so we will have to mix it up a bit more. Romania is intriguing. To be honest I have not seen any of the 'Do not wear videos' you mention but then again, I do not look for them. A lot of it is commonsense. The only extra I carry is a scarf so that I can cover my head if necessary, when entering certain religious sites etc. Have been caught out though when visiting the Monasteries in Meteora and had to pay 2 euro for a paisley wrap skit as I was in motorcycle pants and no pants allowed for ladies... so a tip for anyone going there. Skirts only :-) Looked very chic ...

We lived in Padua, Italy for a year which is not a huge tourist destination. I saw young women and girls wear shorts but it was unusual to see older women (40's and over) wearing shorts. They wore dresses and skirts. I didn't comfortable wearing shorts while going to the grocery store or out to eat, so I bought a few casual dresses and skirts to wear around town. Also, we would see younger men and boys wear baseball hats but not older men. We tried to blend in but no one really cares what you wear.

I've been to Europe several times and I wear whatever I felt comfortable in. Definitely saw tons of running shoes, Nikes on everyone. Especially noticed on the tube. Yes, I wore bright color's. Absolutely stood out as an American tourist. But that's ehat we are..lol. Everyone was so nice except for the guy that followed my husband my son and myself in London. He saw us as easy target to rob no doubt. But he was awful at stalking. We caught on as every time we zigged, he zigged. Every time we crossed the street so did he. We decided we'd just stop on the well lit corner in Piccadilly Circus area and when we did he stopped and propped up against the brick wall. We turned and stared at him to let him know the jig was up and he sucked at stalking....lol. He took off running as soon as we looked at him. Thank goodness we were lucky with an inexperienced thief. Pay close attention to your surroundings and who's behind you. Wear what you feel comfortable in. We found in Germany and Paris and London that most people were excited to see Americans and were very kind.

Y’all are hilarious! One of your funniest ones yet. 😂🤣😂🤣. Good information, though. I had never watched one of those videos, although I’ve seen tons of them on KZbin. I’m so glad now I didn’t waste my time….or money. We only carry a backpack and the smallest size carry on suitcase, so buying new clothes just for a part of our travels, is ridiculous and not practical. However, I agree with Carrie….that if I WANT to, that’s a completely different story. In the last two years I have lost over 100 pounds getting ready for our travel adventures. My husband always told me that if I lost all the weight I wanted to, he would buy me a whole new wardrobe. I think it’s totally unfair that he gets to do it now, when I can only pack several outfits in my carry on. 😂🤣😂🤣. I am still losing weight, so I enjoy buying some new outfits every couple of months. Of course, that always means I have to get rid of a few, but I always leave them for the cleaning lady so she can give them to someone in need. Safe travels! Hope you’re enjoying your cruise. Hope you have a wonderful time at home over the holidays. ❤️❤️

I also see a lot of US sports team t-shirts. I do personally draw the line at Seattle Mariners materials. How 'bout them Rangers? 😀 I did learn on a return trip to Greece that if a guy asks you what time it is, he isn't really surprised you're American, doesn't really have a cousin in Pittsburgh, and you probably shouldn't go with him to see his little coffee shop down this back alley.

Well I am a Paris dude, and we are particularly "the chosen ones" as to the standard of what "locals think" in majority of these type of clips, that are 99% (if not 100%) American! Nobody will take offence how you dress! And if they do, its because its a posh place with a potential dress code that would apply to locals as well (in fact, I have seen that they are more tolerant towards tourists than locals!) One more things to Americans: you are not disliked, nor "considered rude" and no normal person will care who or what your current president is up to!

Hey guys, so glad that shoes was the first on the list. I stopped caring about footwear many years ago. I would bring the comfy shoes for day and then another pair of nicer dress shoes for the evening. I have traveled many jurisdictions all around the world, and I have never been refused access to a restaurant because of my casual footwear. They are happy to sell me food and take my money. Would I wear it if I was at home, no - but when traveling with limited space in bags, I have reduced the number of shoes and have NO regrets!!

I have a few comments. I agree, wear what you want. However, if you plan to visit any churches (the Vatican, for example), you must cover your shoulders and knees. Also, as far as backpacks go, many museums will not let you enter with a backpack. So, there is validity to some of these statements. Also, pick-pockets are all over; yes, even with a wallet in your front pocket, it can happen. Do not expect to be able to use foreign currency. Use the currency of the place you are traveling to. Withdraw funds from a bank using the ATM (attached to an actual bank) this is where you get the best rate.

Also the idea of unique European style is so wrong. Europe is so versatile and each country has its own culture and style. You two look great, fit and healthy.

Thank you for this video! Other than religious sites, yeah, I feel like many social codes of how to dress in a culture may not apply to random tourists (and are rejected by many others within the culture). Your exception of socks and sandals--haha, choice exception! On a more serious note, FWIW, years ago, my brother was wearing socks & sandals in Italy, and an Italian woman saw him and thought, "This man needs help." They started chatting, got to know each other, ended up getting married, & ended up getting divorced. Moral of the story: don't wear socks and sandals (and/or, don't try to help anyone who is).

Lol, thanks for jumping into this issue. I just want to add that for some of the advice videos/articles you are talking about, it is sometimes more of a social class issue. As far as France goes (the country I know best), you will absolutely find French people wearing athletic gear everywhere and sporting baseball caps with US team names. However, it will more often be people from modest income backgrounds that adopt an American style so wholeheartedly. Elites tend to look down on this. Former President Sarkozy was quite famously mocked for too enthusiastically imitating Americans.

My three years living in Belgium: I found out that there's no way to not look American. But the good news is that Belgians have great appreciation for the American sacrifice during the two world wars. While there I learned that during WWI, Herbert Hoover (before he became president) was in charge of a Belgian Relief Organization that fed starving Belgians. In almost every town square they flew the US flag. In Flanders Belgium we attended an "American Day" that was supposed to replicate an American county fair... they had apple pie contests and Texas line dancing. They even tolerated my American accented French.
