Addendum Q5: To be more precise, the Dutch dialect spoken in Belgium is Flemish. And, obviously, there are many other languages (Walloon, Italian, Spanish, for instance) spoken in the country than the three official languages (official languages being Dutch, French and German). Additional info Q2: Beethoven, Mozart and Freud each lived in Vienna and called it home for many years. The quiz does not say that any of them was born in Vienna :) Additional info Q3: Denmark is connected *by land* to the rest of Europe only through Germany. Denmark is also connected by bridge to Sweden. This does not affect the question and answer :) Erratum Q8: Cemetery*

@Quiz Nook. For Q5, it's a bit more complicated than that. I have no special interest in this, but Flemish is not (yet) a language. It is one of the many varieties of Dutch. In Belgium are also spoken Brabantian and Limburgish. However, the Flemish Community and the Flemish Region actively promote Flemish as their official language. Therefore, they say their language is Flemish, not Dutch, and that is probably how most Belgians will answer the quizz. By the way, this is how Luxemburgish was promoted from a German dialect to a full language. It is called an AUSBAU language, and that is probably what is going to happen to Belgian Flemish (please note that some people in France also speak a variety of Flemish). I recommend you change the Q5 question, it being unnecessarily tricky.
@quiznook
@quiznook 2 жыл бұрын
@@MmmGallicus Hi Mm, thanks for your comment. It is what I understand as well. Also very interesting to learn that that is how Luxemburgish came to be an official language, thanks for that info. Although I can't remove just one question from the quiz, I'm hoping the addendum will provide sufficient clarification/precision. And I will definitely aim to be as precise as possible as to avoid any potential ambiguity, when creating the questions. Thanks again for taking the time to share your thoughts, appreciated!

Fun fact: English has its roots in the Germanic languages, from which German and Dutch also developed, as well as having many influences from romance languages such as French. (Romance languages are so called because they are derived from Latin which was the language spoken in ancient Rome.) The English word father is vater in German and pater in Latin. Vader in Dutch. Lots of Dutch influences in the Caribbean (Papiamento language), Suriname, Indonesia, South Africa and even Russia (shipping terms).

I went into this thinking I’d do ok if the questions dealt with the older countries of Europe. I missed Shengen Area, Plitvice Park, the shape of Portugal, and the river - thought it was Danube not Rhine. So I missed two in “old” nation-states and two in “new.” Pffft. Need to read the news more. Hello from Southern California 👋.

Same here...I thought I'd do OK, but also missed a bunch of (what I thought were silly) questions. But I'm in Brisbane, Australia. Europe's on the other side of the planet somewhere...that's my weak excuse!

13/15 fun. I thought Flemish was the language most spoken in Belgium. I worked with a Belgian she spoke French & did Flemish at school. No Dutch whatsoever.
@MmmGallicus
@MmmGallicus 2 жыл бұрын
Isn't Flemish a variety of Dutch? And there are other varieties of Dutch spoken in Belgium too: Brabantian, Limburgish, for example. So, it's officially Dutch, which is the official language of the Flemish Community, which comprises Flanders and, more widely, the Flemish Region.

15/15. The question about Denmark's border with Germany should specify "land border". Denmark shares sea borders with Sweden, Norway and, arguably, Canada (the Davis Strait between Greenland and Canada's Ellesmere Island).

Pretty easy for Europeans. I am English and the last time I studied geography was 55 years ago but the only one I didn't get was the basilica. Still I guess most Americans would struggle with this quiz - even ones that have been to Europe. I was once in a souvenir shop in Helsinki when an American in front of me held up a T-shirt and asked "what's this Suomi that's written all over everything?" The girl answered him in perfect English "it's the country you're in right now sir"

I have traveled and worked in Europe. Got 14 out of 15. Did not know Schengen. Always just called the member countries part of the EU. But I learned something from this. There are a list of countries from which visitors are required to obtain a Schengen Visa in order to visit it's member states. The USA is not on that list. However, beginning in 2022 US Citizens will need to apply for an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) visa waiver to visit, even if the stay is under 90 days (the current visa exception period).

11 of 15. Perhaps not too poor a score for a Yank who was last in any part of Europe in 1994. I missed questions 5, 8, 14, and 15. Questions 5, 8, and 14 timed out before I came to a firm decision, but I would have been correct (on question 5 I was fixated on French, even thought is wasn't a choice. I blame Dame Agatha Christie and Hercule Poroit on that ;) ). Question 15 I drew a complete blank. Thank you for the quiz. I truly enjoyed it.

Spaniard here. 1: OK. I nailed it because I knew Sicily was in Italy, Ibiza was in Spain and Corseca was in France. 2: OK. Ridiculously easy. 3: OK. I can't spot Denmark on a map, but I know it's in Scandinavia. France and Russia are way too far from there, and Iceland is an island. Germany was the only option left. 4: OK (I'm Spanish). 5: FAIL: I knew that Belgium was inhabitated by French speaking people and Dutch speaking people, but I thought the most spoken language there was French. 6: OK. I knew Brussels was the capital of Belgium, Kiev was the capital of Ukraine and Albania was a former Soviet country, so Monaco was the only option left. 7: OK, but almost pure luck. No clue about Volga or Seine, but I knew the Danube split Budapest, so I chose Rhine for some reason. 8: OK (I'm Spanish - from Barcelona, actually). 9: FAIL. I knew Slovakia was part of the USSR, so it couldn't be Italy, which is in the very South of Europe. Bulgaria is in the South too, but I chose Serbia. I thought the Czech Republic had remained the same since the end of WWII. 10: FAIL. I thought Berlin was closer. I can spot Germany on a map, but not The Netherlands. I knew those countrues were very close, though. 11: FAIL. The whole Brexit thing began to flood the media back in 2015 or so, but I wasn't sure whether the UK had formally left in 2017 or 2020. 12: OK. Ridiculously easy. 13: I have a vague clue of what some languages I don't speak look like grammatically. 'Plitvice' isn't Hungarian nor English at all. Not sure about Russian, so I chose Croatian. 14: OK. I'm Spanish and there are only two countries in the Iberian Peninsula: Spain and 'the other one'. 15: OK, but luck again. The blue banana is an informal way of referring to a region in continental Europe, and it's relatively small. I chose Schengen Area for some reason. Where's my prize?
