"African Art" is NOT INDIGENOUS BANTU art, it is a HYBRID art of WITCHCRAFT(majini(in water=maji); mami(mother)-wata(water)l vodoo, macumba, santaria) that comes from INDO-ARAB trader ancestor idol and/or polytheistic cultures. Indigenous BANTU culture is PURE MONOTHEISM like the HEBREW DEITY in the bible NOT in Triune-Arian Christianity!, and ANCESTORS are FOREFATHERS who are DEAD! The BANTU, unlike the GREEK does NOT believe in SEPARATION of BODY and SOUL, but the PERSON is a WHOLE ENTITY who is INDIVISIBLE, and therefore no such a thing as a GHOST, the WORD GHOST, does NOT even EXIST in BANTU languages because the DEAD PERSON was a WHOLE PERSON and NOT a DISEMBODIED "spirit"! So all that so-called "African" ART is NOT BANTU but a MONSTROUS ART of the ALIEN witCHCRAFT of the Middle and far East, Christianity and Islam and NOT BANTU. That "African" ART SHOULD NOT be MASQUERADING as BANTU ART, and so it should NOT be RETURNED as it DOES NOT BELONG to this MONOTHEISTIC BANTU continent. MOST of the MASKS have DISTINCT INDO-ARAB PHENOTYPIC and even WHITE-RED Colour with BLUE EYE even! and others like the BENIN BRONZE HEADS are from INDONESIAN Warriors...so as BANTU learn to ANALYSE these "African" ART they KNOW BETTER that this ART is NOT their art but an ART OF EUROPEAN PATRONAGE, what WHITES and ARABS wanted from the HYBRID(Indo-Arab+Bantu(Berber(Baba=fathers!)) RACE they were creating and calling "Africa/African" So its IMPORTANT to EXPOSE this IMPERIALISTIC ART forms MASQUERADING as belonging or DEFINING the CULTURE of the BANTU when it DOES NOT, as its POLYTHEISTIC and WITCHCRAFT WORLDVIEW is completely ALIEN to the BANTU MONOTHEISTIC worldview!...an INFORMED REVIEW of what is BANTU and what is COLONIAL "African" culture...is NEEDED

I am from Germany and we talk a lot about our past, especially sec.WW and everything around it I always thought it was imbalanced. Not only bc we talk not enough about our colonial past or the colonial past of other European countries. But also I would love to learn more about the history of other countries. In the last years colonialism became more and more a subject in tv. I don't know how it's is in schools. I haven't been there for a while. I hope that not only will we talk about history of colonialism more, but also nations of Europe and Africa talk would talk about their past together. That means African countries can have an influence on how European countries talk about these history chapters. Sadly history often is dark and brutal. But maybe this can lead to an deeper understanding of history and culture that can lead to a better future together. What really hit me was the fact that when Germany reunited actually the eastern part just entered the Constitution of the western part. When originally it was promised that the real constitution will be given when the eastern and the western part come together. This would ve ment that people from both parts would have sit together and put the best characteristics of both countries into one. In communist germany and in the Sowjet union crimes against humanity took place. But not everything had been bad. In fact, some things had been better in than in western germany. But this happens when we value one development in certain countries higher than others. Right now wester economical structures are valued as world standard. And there may be good things to it but also bad things. I hope that the world starts to look on every development in every country and value it's advantages to help humankind evolve

What a timely and poignant presentation, Ms. Adichie! Thank you! I am a white American male who has just come back home from a marvelous four-week tour of Namibia. While there, I was taken aback by the presence of monuments extolling the actions of the German Imperial soldiers who were instrumental in the deaths of the 100,000 native Herero and Nama people in what was then German Southwest Africa. I visited the field located on the edge of the city of Swakopmund containing the unmarked graves of hundreds of Herero and Nama. Meanwhile, in the center of the city, there is a large monument unveiled in 1908 dedicated to the memory of the German Imperial soldiers who slaughtered the Hereros and Nama in the years 1904-1908. I NEVER KNEW this about Germany. German rule of what is now Namibia ended 117 years ago, and these monuments ARE STILL ON DISPLAY! I saw first-hand the "German nostalgia for Imperial times" which you have just referred to. This is especially strong in Swakopmund. It is insulting to all present-day Namibians, especially to the descendants of the murdered Herero and Nama. Germany definitely owes present-day Namibia restitution. Restitution, NOT loans! It is time for the white man, be he American, Canadian, or European, to right the historical wrongs which our ancestors perpetrated on the non-white world.
@wolfsettgast49452 жыл бұрын
Nobody ever denied German atrocities, but why do you need to exaggerate? Between 40-60000 Herero died (every single victim one too much). This war-crime was an exaggerated retalliation initiated by Lieutenant General von Trotha (after 1500 Germans were killed), and von Trotha was directly called back to Berlin after the news had spread and he was tried in court.

Yip....it leaves out a lot of the facts: Biggest traders in slaves were Arabs. Nobody hears about that. People think whites ran around Africa with large nets catching slaves. In fact they were TRADED. One could say Americans responsible for z% , x% Portuguese, y% South America ect. But it was AFRICAN chiefs who sold 100% of these slaves. Africa was the LAST place to outlaw slavery. Mauritania abolished it reluctantly in 1981! Britain actively fought against it for years and outlawed it in the 17th century!!! Yet all you hear is white contribution. Slavery is not a racist issue it is about who is in power and who is vulnerable. There was an active trade in white slavery - the word slave is derived from thexword "slava" - east european, white slaves. In fact, Britain outlawed slavery LONG before it outlawed white child labour!!! Anyone holding onto a selective, racist narrative is doing so willfully, stupidly and for their own benefits.

One can understand the Western & European colonial powers wants to forget and just to move on, but unfortunately some European nations are not acting in a good faith. We are still seeing European greed & extreme corruptions, and they are repeating similar old colonial behaviors filled with all type of oppressions, political pressures, proxy wars, assassinations, Market monopolies, degrading African nations, land occupations, and continuing to steal the natural resources of Africa, Middle East, South America, and some asian small nations. Europe needs first to show good faith by real action and not by words. Europeans must teach the true history worldwide, followed by returning the stolen arts & stolen resources, and to help build These nations in Africa and all over the world to bring equality & justice free of biases, and to let the diverse free world to improve humanity and to build a much better civilized world for all humanity. The healing can all be done in the right way and then we all can move on to protect such history and to build our planet earth. King Leopold ranks up with the worst examples of colonialism, exploitation and genocide. His people are ashamed of him. But if you follow African history don’t think that some African leaders themselves haven’t, or didn’t practice genocide. Your own ancestors capture by traders and subsequent slavery also amounts to genocide. It doesn’t need western media to mislead you about them. Liberia, Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Sudan, Mali, zululand, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Mogadishu, and Kenya amongst many. Enjoy Canada where tales of historical genocide clog the media. Wow. Beautiful speech. European here. I completely agree with her 100%. I think European countries should return many art and important pieces to the countries they were stolen from. The UK, France, Germany, Spain and many other countries have stolen pieces and display them on their museums. It's a disgrace. The British Museum, for instance, wouldn't be the same at all without those pieces. I mean, without those pieces they could probably keep the 'British' in the name without being questioned as an authentic 'British' museum. Also the history part she was talking about is completely true. Me as a Canarian (Canary Islands) know this still happens today in a daily basis. Canarian kids are not told the full story of the Guanches in school. The Guanches are the aboriginal ancestors from the Canaries that were ultimately exterminated. There was a genocide, the same as there was in Spanish speaking Latin American countries. Men were mostly killed or sold as slaves the same as many women and kids. Some women were forced to marry Spaniards or European citizens. That's why many Canarians still have some mitochondrial DNA that comes from their female Guanches ancestors. Kids are told in history class a lot about the Spanish kings, queens and colonial 'possessions' in a way that looks like a nice fairy tale. It's disgusting. What about the history of our true ancestors who were Berbers from Northern Africa, established in the Canaries in the first millennium BCE? Some part of the history is told but not the way we'd like or with the same importance we'd like. They just reserve a bit of the last chapters of the history books to tell kids about the aboriginals and the massacre they suffered by the end of the year. That way kids can forget quickly about it. They also don't talk about any massacre but about a discovery and conquest. Hahaha. They are trying to erase and change our past and culture and nobody cares about it. Only the ones who want to keep their history alive keep pushing to educate future generations our true history. Today as a Canarian you can only be properly informed of your ancestors and history if you inform yourself. There are Guanches mummies outside the Canaries in Madrid, Cambridge, Paris, Germany and Canada among probably other places. That needs to be returned the same as any other archaeological rests that are kept outside the Canaries. Many African countries are full of a European influence that reminds to colonialism still today. It's a shame. Let's hope this can change in a near future. They need more education and people like her who can demand their right to be respected and left alone. Unfortunately Africa is full of corrupted politicians who need to be taken out of power by the African population the same as some remaining regimes. Then the wealth has to be distributed among the population via social politics to create a healthy educated and dignified population.

A society that does not embrace the virtue of honesty can't possibly be trusted to have the capacity to be generous. The fact that many European institutions fail to properly acknowledge their own history could only mean the distortion of others. I think that we must for as long as others lack an interest in right guidance stop expecting others to act with right guidance. All this said I am encouraged by the fact that not all Europeans were involved in slave trading and colonization but for the most part the EU has benefited from it by it's modern trade relations and those more responsible European countries should take a lead on the future of Europe.

@@kuanged you are absolutely wrong. We have an Uighur married into our family, I have firsthand information to confirm all atrocities are true. Her parents passports have been snatched, her Uncle disappeared without a trace. Chinese authorities literally burst into homes and force feed people to stop them fasting in Ramadan. She hasn’t seen her parents in years and she cannot visit them. They can’t even talk openly on video calls. Uighur are oppressed. Least you can do is admit the truth. However, if you live in China, we all can understand that your safety lies in denying/ avoiding this topic. After all, everyone remembers what the authorities did to the first Chinese doctor who identified Coronavirus. I don’t need to say more.

@@ammarafatima9717 When did this happen? What year? Assuming they did investigate him, do you know if her father had ties to ETIM? Are you aware of the unprovoked massacres by Uighur extremists that happened in past decades? How do you know her family wasn't involved? The US has something called Homeland Security in the US, and they send people to Guantanamo for less. Let's not jump to conclusions about your "family member" and take her at her word. That is, assuming anything you said just now was even true.

Ngozi, anytime I listen to you - I'm encourage that your works here on earth have just started. You're really the hope and embodiment of hope to make the world a better place. Europeans read the same bible verse that says "there shall be no slave, no master..." yet in a unanimous decision they enslaved Africans for over 571 years. They stole and continued to steal and kill Africans in thousands. The sacrifice continues because the innocent Africans chilfren who are ridden of dieasses and uneducated sacrificed their lives and comfort for generations of Europeans. I just hope that Europe and the "West" carry the stolen goods and blood of Africans children to their graves or their heaven, which is not same have the Almighty God lives in.... May the judgement of God be true - the lamb of God - Africans of today!

She's courageous and making so much sense! I am Chinese and I am with her. The west should tell about their colonialism history in details and admit the wrong doings and should return our precious ancient arts. And especially stop the neo-colonization in poor countries like African or others!

That tickles me, in a sad way how so many feel if we erase it it never happened. No, it cannot be erased. The best way, I think, is to face it and do better. Admit it to yourselves and others and change. Trying to erase it and continue doing the same things is not good for anyone.

Many people say "well I wasn't alive when these crimes were committed, none of the people who were alive back then are still alive". This misses the point entirely. It is not about individual people, it is about actions taken by states that still exist. The disgusting colonial history of Belgium was perpetrated by the Belgian state. This state still exists, just like other post-colonial powers. The wealth extracted from Africa (in all its forms, cultural artifacts, goods, labour, ...) still circulates through these European states and their society. The active thieving may have (mostly) ended, but the crime is still ongoing.
