These cities are not hostile to tourists. They just don't want to tolerate a state of constant debauchery. Some people treat these places like adult theme park and it's disturbing and disgusting to everyone. Also, the short time house rental industry that takes housing for locals away. Those are the biggest issues.

I used to live in York. Tourism is such a mixed blessing. On one hand, it's nice to live in a place with so many attractions, so many great pubs as resturants. But then you get coked up race goers making the city an absolute hellscape. People come in and just wreck shit up. It costs money to carry out all the repairs and cleaning needed to tidy up after people throw up in the street and break bins and lamposts. Also, doing day to day stuff in a place like that can be a pain. Being late to work because you're stuck behind big crowds of slow moving tourists. Property prices, and general cost of living is just sky high too. Tourism is good and a lot of tourists are sound. But I think people need to realise the downsides and respect that.

This is hilariously wrong. Half of these places literally rely on British tourists as a major part of their economy, and are some of the most popular with British tourists. Tourists won't be picking the most hostile destinations possible to visit. I was in Amsterdam last week and had an incredibly warm welcome. Keeping it to just Europe, I and others were much less welcome in Germany. Amsterdam and Venice have their own over-tourism problem they've made for themselves but it's nothing to do specifically with the UK.

As a Brit when on holiday I'm often embarrassed and ashamed of fellow Brits behaviour, they are rude, loud, often drunk and disregard local customs and culture. More than once my husband and I have had to defend our hosts from their abuse and foul language from Brits not just young people either people our age or older too. When we first started going abroad with our children we researched our destination its culture and customs even learning a bit of the language. We made life long friends and have been back often they have taken us to village festivals not known by tourists my husband has helped move Bulls, Cows and sheep to different pastures and once helped chop down Olive trees so they could get the wood exported on time after one of the cousins had an accident and were behind with getting the wood ready for shipment. We know their extended family and there grandchildren. My own children still holiday there every other year with their own children we love them and they treat us like family. It's not quite the tourists themselves but the fact that so much of the housing gets turned over on AirBnB and rented to them and leaves nothing affordable for the locals. In the old days, tourists stayed at the hotel, and locals lived in the houses/apartments.

It is not us overall that is the problem and yes there is a minority who ruin the reputation for the majority in these locations. Other countries have a similar issue with their holiday maker minorities going abroad and getting drunk. The BIG problem, hence the protests, is not the tourists, but a lot of home owners are converting their apartments to AirBNB places and kicking out the locals who work and rent those places, as they can get more Money from that. Meaning that those who actually work cannot live in the locale. Typical Telegraph (and other British papers) stirring up trouble as usual and blaming the Brits, when it is far more nuanced than their hacks can cope with, but it sells papers! grrrr

We ourselves drink quite a lot, and if you come and get drunk with us we'll have a great time together, but we can handle it without getting aggressive, or disrespecting others. On the other hand, nothing from this video is due to any nationality in particular, just that instead of bringing benefits, over tourism has made life of locals more expensive and sometimes losing their own identity in exchange for money that goes to other people's pockets. They are only asking for regulations to live with dignity in their own place. Isn't that what Brexit was about, but in a very hostile way and gone wrong?

The cruises are just a bad deal for any city or town destination, you just get thousands of people all at once who are all running around trying to see and do as much as they can in 6-8 hours. They have food and accommodation on the ship so all they are going to buy is a few sandwiches, drinks and tourist tat. The only ones really benefiting from it are the docking services and cruise lines themselves, not the town that has to deal with the thousands of people running around without actually benefiting the locals much at all.

Eh, not really accurate. A lot of those places mentioned are destinations that are frequented by Brits more than any other single group. Also, Amsterdam explicitly called out British men coming to the city to party on Stag Weekends. So, while it isn't 'just British' a lot of it is

I live in the first Mallorcan town shown (Soller). Unfortunately, when it can take 90 minutes just to drive out of town because of traffic, local shops have been changed to the tourist market (hardware and groceries to art galleries and fashion boutiques) and restaurant and bar prices have doubled, but now close for the winter because they can make the same turnover in half the time, and buildings that housed the families are converted into boutique hotels and hostels, then something is wrong. The average house price now exceeds €3/4M, and rents €1,000 a week, and yet tourists still expect their rooms cleaned, laundry done, food cooked and served, bus and taxi-drivers, plus police on the steets, and those streets swept and gardens kept, all by people earning under €20k. What, by 3rd world migrants flown in on 9 month contracts working 12 hour shifts seven days a week and housed in dormitories, like some gigantic inmobile cruise ship?
