I wish we could get them in the UK but they're sort of throwing their hands up in the air like an ICE company and going, 'Maybe we'll be able to do it in 2025?' and stuff. Not that they can make enough for the left hand drive market because of complete lack of effort. I would love to have one if they were serious about it :( The bonkers thing is, they've got as much a €10,000 between them and the next car, so they could easily charge more in many ways and still be far more attractive if they'd only build them. The profit margin is basically theirs to set.

@@jonevansauthor Maybe it is a LHD market thing? Last year I was plugging in at Lidl and there was one plugged in there. The driver came back to it and we got chatting. He was renting it and wanted a little runabout for a few days, perfectly adequate for the job. Rental companies are cottoning on to EVs realising that the maintenance costs are negligible and resale value will be high.

They aren't building anywhere near enough of these, which is particularly stupid given how economies of scale work e.g. they're not making as much money per car, selling them cheap and not building them in as great a quantity as they can.

At least the movers and shakers at Renault weren't sitting on their hands. I don't know what's gotten into the Japanese lately and their stance towards EVs. They broke up the Nissan-Renault JV which was very fruitful overall. As for the Chinese competition, if you can't beat them, join them. Make great products and the people will gobble them up. :)

Fair point. It's just that in my country (Denmark) a Dacia Spring currently costs around $23,000-25,000 for a facelifted model and you can get the outgoing model for around $22,000 while stocks last. Granted our taxes are higher than in the US but in comparison you can drive away in a new Model Y for around $54,500 here. Totally different car which is almost 2.5x the price but my point is that the Tesla is more like 5x the car which makes the Dacia poor value. If the Dacia was priced

I was intrigued in the summer of 2021 ( and had one beer more one evening), so I ordered a Dacia Spring 44 HP. I ordered the car in July and get the car in March, next year. After deducting the government subsidies I ended paying 7950 EUR (no joke, no exaggeration). Brand new car. I was curious how a 44 HP car will feel like. It is almost 1 year now cince I got the car and I am still surprised by how smart and well sorted for city driving, Dacia Spring is. I can't imagine a 65 HP version...most probably it will fly...I almost use only this car when I drive inside the city, it's perfect! During spring,summer, autumn, I get 230-235 Km of range, in winter 190 Km.

Switching to MySE 12MW can save 1/3 of wind turbines, 30% of sea area, 24% of foundation cost, 27% of tower cost, and hence 25% of the entire project cost. Overall, 8.6% on costs per kWh are being saved.

This small car should be popular for many. It should be easy to charge at home. It reminds me of a small electric Polaris Ranger - maybe prettier and more comfortable, but about the same range and price point. Really the difference, for me, between all the new electric car models and a Tesla is the safety engineering and the "eco-system" (which includes all the traffic data and on-board computer system updating, Telsa insurance, Superchargers, etc.).

I'm waiting for this type of car to be built here in Thailand. Hopefully, we can buy it in the next few years @ 8-9,000 usd. It's for daily commute(60km)to nearby city and back. My Spring is 1 month old. I was aware that car is made by Dongfeng in China and also dealer told me that first day. And battery in mine is 26.8 kwh, it is not lfp. On charge I can drive from 180 in normal to 200 km in eco mode. Consumption is beetween 11 and 14 kwh (mild winter and no hills). But price is 22k eur before incentives. For 9k in China it is bargain but we will not see prices like that in eu. Maybe around 15k in few years

ANY new EV that is more affordable is a step forward. Compromises on size, performance, range and gadgets are more than acceptable if the price is attractive. I think back to the introduction of the Morris/BMC/Leyland Mini; (yes, I'm that old!) It captured the imagination of a generation because it was affordable as well as functional. If only it had been reliable, history may have been different. A small EV may be just what is needed.

Price is the limiting factor for most of us, and rational people love small cars. I want a 2 seater like a Smart but their model is out of date. I would take a small 4 seater if it were the cheaper option, and the Spring would be if they made it available in the UK. They've been dragging their feet out of sheer spite sadly, and they've only sold a few thousand anyway because they're not really ramping up production because they're ultimately an ICE company.

Euro NCAP changed to an entirely corrupt system that distorts the nature of reality and makes it seem like veritable tanks will crumple like paper if you hit them with a shopping trolley, simply because they don't have features like automatic lane keeping (which people often turn off anyway, unlike airbags which they realistically never turn off).

The current Dacia Spring is decent enough however the engine power is too low, it makes it sketchy on highways. With 65hp it will be more than fine. Good car for running errands, going to the next town over, things like that. They should consider one with a 30kWh battery, should still be cheap, would probably hurt Renault Zoe's sales, though. Also here in France we have a 5000€ credit for buying an electric car under 45000€, 2500€ on top if you put an old car to recycling, The Spring is so cheap that it comes against the limit of the government paying no more than 27% of the list price. That's why the new one will be more expensive, it will be able to take full advantage of the tax credit.

The Dacia Spring would be a monster hit here in the USA. We need a cheap, compact city car. That is the main use case for cars anyway, because most people live in cities. Alas we will never see one at anywhere near that price. We only get expensive, tricked out, bigger vehicles here in the USA. Part of it is greed by the auto companies, and part of it is the silly regulations they keep adding to cars which makes them more expensive.

I can see this car being popular in Australia, but only if they boost the battery size to give it a little extra range. The MG ZS had a similarly low range before the recent facelift, but the Dacia Spring could be priced well below the price of the MG, maybe $25k AUD.

Most commuters drive at max an hour to work and an hour back. How far do you go in an hour ? 80kms/50 miles maybe. Daily 150km range with overnight charging or charging at work is more than enough for most commuters and even overkill for a lot of them.

@@halnineooo136 That's great in theory, but people have become used to the versatility of having a car for commuting which can also be used for road trips when needed. Many people can't afford to own a second car just for road trips. There are also people who don't have off-street parking, and therefore can't charge overnight, and/or can't charge at work. Having a car that can drive for a few days or a week without having to recharge is a bonus, especially as it's no longer a case of 5 minutes at a gas station, if you have to sit and twiddle your thumbs at a fast charger for 30 minutes waiting for your car to recharge.

Some European brand names are selling Chinese cars, or cars made by companies which have owners in China. Look around your house, and you'll find Chinese products all around you. So the question 'Would you buy a Chinese car?' is moot.

It's moot unless the Spring does come to the UK anyway and prices are falling again now. Honestly, there's a chance that Tesla will release it's budget car before the Spring reaches the UK (although I'm not counting on it). It seems likely to me that the Spring will go back down in price, and for all I know that high price is due to import duty not the base price of the vehicle. Perhaps it's gone up to that level across all EU countries? Or the Euro plummeted in value because of Liz Truss going bonkers.

Secondly, Dacia, a Romanian brand and long year partner of Renault, is been pronounced differently. If you think of the Netherlands: “Dutch” and then just end with “ia”. Hi there, Thank you for the video, I feel like Dacia could really make THE cheap Electric car for the people, and I wish we could all band together to have at least one small and cheap 4 people electric car for the EUropean market, maybe the next improvement in Dacia is a bespoke EV Dacia Spring Ultimate (Built 70% in Romania, aside from the batteries, Cameras, and some parts of the engine, that would cost in total a maximum amount of 32000 euro (with options), with floor mounted and secured battery pack available for ~200 miles, with 2 motors of about ~100hp each, front and rear, and 2 safety cameras for insurance that are 140 degrees wide angle (and 60 degrees vertical angle) and record wide 1080p to a lockable glove box where you can provide your own ssd or usb stick, and have an array of settings, like always recording while driving, for about two weeks, but have 2 abilities, one is auto mark and auto save the footage, and have a manual mark button on the steering wheel, in case someone else has a crash, and it will save 30 minutes before and 30 minutes after (an hour in total) on the marked time, and using the new compression standard (AV1) that also allows for low bandwidth but high quality streaming (or compression for youtube videos), but it has hardware acceleration, so that should be built in the camera option package. (of course, you should not be obligated to add these features, so you should have options)

Thank you for pointing this out. I absolutely LOVE this development. China demanded join-venture when foreign car companies trying to sell cars in China back then. At the time, China was hoping foreign powers can share technologies with the Chinese. Well... foreign companies shared practically everything except chassis, engine, and transmission... the three most critical technology to make a half-way decent car. The direct result that the Chinese never managed to make a half-way decent domestic car simply because these three technology barriers take a lot of time and effort to crack and there is no foreseeable scenario which Chinese can ever catch up with the West and Japan and Koreans, as the incumbents are not standing still neither. This is the reason why Chinese bet big on electric car, and after 13 years of trying, Chinese finally start to see hope: China never managed to crack engine/transmission technologies, but you don't really need them in an electric car, don't you. What I see is something actually welcoming: the flow of technology in join ventures is now reversed: Chinese start to provide technology to European carmakers for their EVs, even if it means a stop-gap measure for these traditional carmakers to catch up. It is an example of trade, join ventures benefited both parties at its finest.

The dacia dealer will not import the spring here. They can not put enough profit on it. Similar happens with many other small evs. We need new shops that sell small evs. Probably get bikeshops to get small evs. The dacia dealer actually said that evs are no good and do not work here. when i said that tesla works well he said that tesla costs twice the amount i know tesla costs. dealers are so dead. he said that hybrids are ok and i told him that hybrids are junk. we obviously did not agree on much.

These joint ventures are a strategic move by the old auto makers to keep the much cheaper Chinese cars out of the European/UK market because the agreement is to rebadge for Europe with a European name and charge much more in that market. I guess the Chinese are happy because they’re getting the work and earning at least as much if not more and the European governments are happy because they’re protecting their companies without doing it overtly. This is why we don’t get very cheap EVs already, with only MG going out on their own a little with the MG4.

Its a deal with the devil for the European manufacturers as they won't be able to put limits on Chinese brand imports as they rapidly grow in the next few years. All the Chinese brands will be growing rapidly this year and next in Europe, while the European manufacturers will not have developed their own manufacturing EV capacity and ability. MG is owned by SAIC, then there is BYD, Xpeng, Li, Nio etc. There is also Changan with the Shenlan SL03 Tesla model 3 competitor (like the BYD Seal).

The Renault Kwid was a deathtrap sold in India, China & Brazil renowned for its lack of safety. Not exactly confidence inspiring and this is the platform for this EV. So expect weird transmission tunnel humps and other weirdness because it was never designed to be an EV platform. Renault / Dacia threw in some minimal safety kit with the Dacia Spring rebrand but it's still only a 1-star NCAP rating. The Spring might be fine as a runabout in a city and as a bargain bin EV but I wouldn't want to use it as anything else. Renault seriously need to have a think about their EV offerings - the Megane e-tech is a great car but it's too expensive and below that they have an ancient Zoe and this thing.

That's simply too expensive. I realise there are costs involved in producing a RHD model and all the extra red tape post Brexit, but if VW and others are promising to get near price parity with ICE and EV models in 2025, the gap will close to a level that a lot of people won't see this as cheap enough to accept the compromises. Make it £12-13k and it should sell in great numbers. Of course, the car industry is greedy and they clearly don't want to operate on small margins - which is why car makers are seemingly obsessed with selling us heavy SUV EVs that will struggle to reach 2 or 3 miles per kilowatt hour in normal driving. This can do around twice that, making it super efficient and ideal for city driving.

I know, right? Now I can't use my daily driver for rallying. I get why people would love to have super high specced cars with five star ratings but it just doesn't bother me because I don't crash my car or let other people crash into me. The price is vastly more important than the NCAP rating. I would, however, not want one of those Toyotas where the wheels kept falling off, or a roll on roll over Subaru. Those are real safety disasters. Fractionally better survivability for children I don't have in the back seat I won't ever use even with adults, doesn't interest me in the slightest.

Oh and just in case I was wildly wrong I wondered what a one star meant. Apparently it's 100% meangingless trash with no bearing on the reality of safety. This example, which is the Dacia Jogger, got a four star rating for adult occupancy. But NCAP maxes out on the lowest rating given. Meaning that it scored one overall because 'safety assist' was only rated at one star. It doesn't have all the most modern features like lane assist. Features which have nothing to do with genuine safety because they don't save the most lives. They're there on expensive cars to save a tiny fraction of the lives that used to be saved in crashes. Lives are saved with seatbelts and modern chassis work and so on. Anyway, this article goes over it pretty well but I suspect people buying recent cars that are twice as expensive and have five stars, are not five times safer in a crash or that much less likely to crash in the first place. The styling is good and I'm all for low prices but let's be realistic. As much as I love your optimism let me remind people that that the current Dacia Spring is a crappy car with mostly bad reviews and a horrible 1 star safety rating. Unless the new model improves significantly (especially on safety which I doubt) I would definitely stay away. I don't necessarily have anything against small city cars but it's size also means you can't expect the rear seats to accommodate people above 5 feet. It might be the cheapest EV in Europe but most reviewers don't think the current model is worth its price and I'm not convinced that a refreshed model will bring enough improvements to make it worth considering.

This puts what we have in Europe to shame! The Dacia Spring starting around €22 grand is disappointing. It's good for an EV standard, but when "normie" buyers walk into a Dacia dealership and compare it to the new Dacia ICE cars, it will be a problem. And we all know how friendly dealerships are with EVs. European automakers will have to bite the bullet if they want to insulate their market from far more competitive Chinese offerings. Either European branded Chinese built EVs will have to be tariffed fairly, or all the parts must be imported into Europe and assembled.

I drove this car last summer in France and it's a total piece of trash. It was a terrible car to drive and couldn't imagine living with it. If I lived in Paris or some other large city that might work.
