What: We made a video about Peter de Vries's death and organized crime in Europe. Honestly, this was a sensitive video, and we weren't entirely sure how to do it correctly. We hope that the video does something in regards to educating people about the threat of organized crime in Europe.
Why: Peter de Vries's death shocked us, and we think it's fundamentally important for people to grasp the bigger picture of what makes such a heinous crime like shooting someone in broad daylight possible.

I believe expanding the set of drugs that are legally available is the most effective way to combat organized crime. It would not just shrink the black markets to a fraction of their current size, but bring in tax revenue, and save billions in police wages (or release capacities for fighting lingering violent crime, tax evasion, etc). Cannabis is low hanging fruit (risk profile compares favourably to alcohol), but certain psychedelics and stimulants should go on the list too. To protect users/society from the physical+psychological dangers of drugs, the substances should be available from pharmacies, *in limited quantities*, and of course only for adults (minimum age could be 18 years, but could also be older).

“Utopia” means “no place”, by its very definition it’s impossible to achieve in the real world. However, utopia can be achieved within yourself and you can carry it with you wherever you go. As an American this is fascinating to see. There's a common myth here that western Europe is a utopia, violence doesn't exist and crime is a non issue. This isn't to say that it's a bad place or anything but it helps to orient oneself when they realize that there are problems even in the states and models that one thinks is paradise

You're completely wrong. In Poland it is highly illegal even to possess yet organized crime still exist. Impossible, right? Criminalizing possession of drugs ruins far more people's lives then making it legal (I am not talking about selling) as far too many people have their lives ruined by being sent to prison for a gram of weed. I'm Portuguese and here in Portugal only possession of certain small amounts and consumption has been decriminalized and yes you can be caught with a small amount of cocaine on the street by police and you won't be prosecuted but you will be forced to go through a state paid drug detox program, on the other hand selling or being caught with large amounts is still criminalized with up to 10 years in prison even though drug dealers now the exact amounts that are stipulated in legislation so they only sell small amounts at a time. Another thing, if you visit Lisbon or Porto expect to be offered drugs (FAKE DRUGS) all the time, it's one of the bad sides of the coin we took when drugs got decriminalized, no one is afraid of being detained.

While I agree this is a real problem that must be addressed, I think a part of it passes through the decriminalisation of some types of narcotic consumption. The war on drugs in the US was a massive failure by most accounts, let's not repeat their mistakes. As for other forms of organized crime, it's good to hear Europe is working on it. what I find fascinating in this conversation is how it's always focused on drugs. Yet the majority of Money comes from people smuggling. Germany and the Netherlands give a great incentive to this, as they legalized Prostitution. At the same time the possibility to claim asylum and the non existing punishment for illegal Border crossings give further incentives.

Prostitution in illegality causes way more problems than documented legal prostitution. If you keep track of the people who are doing this work, where they're from etc. you can keep business away from the illegal market with pimps and human trafficking. Saying that legalization incentivizes is short sighted and inaccurate, an existing market is not going away through legislation. Also, people crossing borders looking for a better future isn't going to stop as long as the structural problems that caused them to leave aren't addressed.

Definitely to some degree. Since the EU added Romania and Bulgaria it became even more scary here. The EU’s blind adding of every country does really a lot more damage than good. Back to the roots would be lovely, but very unlikely. Even a small state such a Malta has made so many things possible for criminals, but people refuse to change.

Violence in the U.S. is still way more common and obviously is the growth at the drug market in Europe greater than in the U.S. because it is at a way smaller level. The drug consumption in the U.S. is way extremer. The EU still has to do something against this rise because if there‘s one thing we don‘t want, it‘s to become like the U.S.

Legalize some of the more common drugs, which will reach the people any way (nothing can stop the market), normalize the responsible use of them and let know what they really can and can not do, stop founding gangs with prohibition. The main goal of the War on Drugs was to highten the price of drugs, the effect was that organised crime got better, more violent, the prices dropped and that it is wide spread. If a certain policy doesn't reach its goal goverments need to look to alternatives, which in this case is regulation of all drugs and a decriminalisation of drug use. Regulation doesn't mean letting companies do what they want but making sensible rules on the use and production of drugs, now there are non and gangs do what makes them the most money. Although lots of drugs experts say this, it will take another 20 years for politics to start considering this.

No they're not illegal. Legislation differs per country, Europe is not one country. In some countries you can own without a permit, in others you have to just register for a permit and in others you might have to be shooting at a range for a year or so. In some countries everyone can register for concealed carrying and in others no one can carry except for going hunting or to a range. I don't know where you're from but why do you think Europe is one country?

Also, in most parts of Europe, spontaneous violence like shootings and suicides occur way less than for example the USA because it takes some time to acquire the firearm that you'd need. Also, most organized crime use shitty eastern bloc pistols and thirty year old kalashnikovs which are also very expensive in the black market which makes acquiring and using them way more difficult. Often footage of shootings shows the weapon malfunctioning because all criminals have access to are these crappy old guns from the balkans.

Europe is way to soft on crime. we need more police, more cross border cooperation regarding police work, a leaner judicial process, and higher punishment. we also need to give the police more autonomy and a better quality of life at work

There are many reasons for this, one which is not allowed to be named so I won't. But another big reason is naturally the EU's generally lax punishments for these crimes, as well as a general disinterest from law enforcement to fight these gangs with everything they've got. I'd rather serve 5-12 years in a soft European prison than life (real life, like until you die) or the death penalty in the US for trafficking large amounts of cocaine. How this escapes anyone is beyond me.

because it keeps criminals as criminals. every country which has extremely tough crime laws, keeps these individuals as repeated offenders the moment they come out of prison. tough prison laws also come with harsher rehablitation laws.this costs states like in europe money, and doesn't turn a repeated offender into a usefull taxpaying citizen, but rather just costs allot in comparison with prison costs, police funding, etc. The american system makes up with this problem as it has fucking privatized prisons. But as you probably know the system they have there is focused on having prisoners returning to prison, and generally not making it hard for prisoners to land in prison. They don't have a better system.

@@Joshua-pw6eq I definitely agree with this. On top of that, one of the other causes of the violence surrounding the drug trade is the fact that the drugs are so heavily criminalized. If we look at other hard drugs that are legal, such as alcohol, tobacco and morphine, we can see that there are no large criminal networks (or at least not nearly on the same scale) surrounding these drugs, even though they are often just as addicting and damaging. The reason for this being that competing businesses who produce these drugs, don't have to resort to violence to solve any issues they might have. Instead, they'll go through the legal system. Organisations that deal in illegal drugs on the other hand, cannot go through the legal system (duh), so they have to resort to violence to resolve all of their issues. Even when looking at a drug that is now legal (alcohol), we can see that large criminal organisations did start to pop up when alcohol was made illegal in the US in the 20's and 30's (see Al Capone). This is why decriminalization and stopping the war on drugs will take the causes out of this violence, since there will be much more money to be made through the legal route.

But you can’t fix them all, and some people just can’t be in society. Which is why life in prison needs to be just that - life in prison.

Yes, however general homicide rates are considerably higher in countries with higher gun ownership rates. Afaik, the only outlier to that is Serbia (and they still have 3x less guns per 100 people than the US). So i d rather have more organized crimes that kills 50 people annually than less organized crime and lunatics with guns which result in 200 murders annually.
