Get Nebula using my link for 40% off an annual subscription: go.nebula.tv/hoog and please check out my exclusive video on the Genius design of Dutch Public Urinals: nebula.tv/videos/hoog-the-genius-design-of-dutch-public-urinals Note a few additional points in this video that deserve clarification: One, Project 1012 oversimplifies massively, apologies in advance, had to get through it quickly. Two, both city regions in Amsterdam (Noord and Zuid) have advised against the Erotic Center, which put the plans in serious risk; although the point remains that the city is committed on removing rooms out of the center and putting them somewhere else. Three, Ruysdaelkade reportedly does not have more crime than de wallen even though it's more isolated, which supports the argument that the building would actually be pretty safe even if it was isolated. Four, the government commissioned the design, but the idea is that it would be private developers who would build it - not the government.

Hey Hoog! I’ve been watching your videos since a long time now, and I just wanted to suggest adding subtitles/captions if possible! It would help understand the names and spellings of places, etc and also keep up with your speech because you do speak a bit too fast (understandably so as you try to put in a lot of information in each video). Just a thought that might help non-native English viewers like me understand better! A big fan of your editing and animations btw, keep up the amazing job!

hmm...i used to live and study in Amsterdam from 2008-2009 and lived around the Ij where there used to be an student dormitory complex for international students. I just remember that Amsterdam would be relatively peaceful until tourist season and then all the tourists would wreck everything with their puking and partying, haha. It was quite a shock because I was really naïve and didn't know the kind of reputation that Amsterdam had until I moved there.

I’d go into old museums and cafes, chat with old people and go to farmer’s markets / second hand shops…it was quite nice! I've been to Amsterdam twice and it's charm is in how beautiful the city is, how easy it is to wander around by walking or riding a bike. While going out at night the walks or bike rides from bar to bar are a breath of fresh air for those used to just staying at a bar all night. If the city centralizes the night life it will lose that charm of having the entire city center be like one huge party that takes place in such a beautiful city

When I dabbled in politics the prostitution portfolio was given to me because nobody else wanted to touch that subject with a ten foot pole. It was steep learning curve, even in my 'open' Netherlands. Here are a few lesson I learned during that time - and why this Amsterdam plan will inevitably burn down and crash. The most important one; Legislating prostitution never works - Never. It never has and it never will. Once people steer into the taboo sphere of human society, laws always start to break down. Arguably the last time we came close to a working legal frame work for sex workers was in ancient Sumeria well over 4,000 years ago and that was more of a religion than anything else. The well intended legal protection of sex workers is often counterproductive. When prostitution became legal in the Netherlands sex workers suddenly had to jump through all kinds of (frankly bizarre) hoops. For many it was simply impossible to comply with all the rules and regulations that the national and local governments began to impose. Brothels closed left and right while their sex workers fell back into illegality. All sex work depends on anonymity. That arrangement protects both those buying and selling sex. Since that anonymity has gone it has become increasingly difficult for people in that industry to secure things like basic financial services from banks. (You know - those bulwarks of morality and integrity🤬). As consequence a lot of transactions are now settled in cash or other means - something which legalizing sex work was supposed to prevent in the first place! The old policy of 'gedogen' (not enforcing certain laws) worked pretty well by comparison. Everybody in the sex industry was on their best behavior because they were engaging in what were legally considered to be criminal practices. One mistake and the police could take them out with ease. Following a few glorious years in the spotlight, where Amsterdam can proudly showcase their sex towers to the world, this project will fail. It will fail because there is no anonymity for the people involved, no access to the necessary secondary services and there will be inevitably more crippling rules and regulations. And you know what is worse of all? I am convinced that many (if not most) of the Amsterdam policy makers are well aware that this won't work, that it can't work. But it will get rid of the red light district for them which will open up all kinds of profitable ventures to them.

As someone who has lived smack-dab in the middle of Amsterdam, Amsterdam Central has a huge problem with an enormous amount of tourists emassing around a very small space. The government has for years been trying to pull trafick away from centrum to other places. Like with renaming the beach in Haarlmen to "Amsterdam Beach". Spreading out "points of interests" is in of itself a sound strategy and could go a long way to helping other areas of the town flourish with increased business and make centrum a more dignified place to live in for the locals. Tourists occupy the streets 24/7, all year round. The majority of people in centrum are by nature transient and it diminishes the local culture. It makes it harder to make long-term relationships and it becomes less attractive to have a family in the area. It is common for families to go on a long vacation during the summer to escape the absolute over-tourism. The thing is though is that prositution has never really been taken seriously by anyone historically, so we don't have a lot of knowledge of how to best organize it. It is basically a huge experiment to me. I'd be very interested to see how this development goes. The safety of the prositutes is my biggest concern however, at the end of the day. EDIT: I still occasionally recieve replies to this commments to this day, mostly outrage over the fact that prostitution exists. I can't change the minds of these people but I'm sorry that you have such arbitrary limits for human empathy. Prostitution has no qualities that deem it more or less inherently moral.

If you don't like the hustle why live there? This is also the reason why the coffee shops and prostitutes have to go. The red light district has been in it's current spot for hundreds of years. Now some well off people, without any connection to Amsterdam end up buying the properties in the area and try to sweep their backyard clean. Right across the city other not so well off Amsterdam locals have to deal with whatever might be coming to them. Hypocritical at best, but then again hypocrisy is to be expected from the Amsterdam city council and mayor.

They might push through. Amsterdam is pretty realistic, but has been a bit slow adapting. The tourism itself has become the main issue, not just for 'weed and prostitutes'. The 'upgrades', buying out 'criminals', were also aimed at appealing to higher class tourism from Asia. But the residents, both low and high on the ladder of society, have become annoyed by the amount of tourism. The initial idea was to get rid of 'cheap tourists' like some of them British who were targeted with ads, mind you, to stay away from Amsterdam, after years of blind promotion - I ❤amsterdam. This is another step in trying the same - it has already sort of failed. Support, politically, has erroded. It isn't that realistic, will cost a lot and it is intimately connected to Amsterdam: tourists will be coming for years, just by reputation. Many people move from Amsterdam because the tourism drives up real estate prices - another reason to buy out 'criminals'. It's a good investment. But like said, it made little change. In short, this won't be concluded in a decade, or 2. Amsterdam has been like this for far too long, I suppose. The mass tourism is a bit novel, though.

I don't get how "over tourism" would reduce business by scaring away actual customers. I feel like being able to join the masses of tourists just looking around and stealthily slipping away to "consume" would be much more comfortable for the customers than walking up to a designated isolated brothel tower, where anyone passing by can tell that you are one of these "perverts" from a mile away..

When I see how they want to push the RLD basically just away this reminds me of Zurich's drug scene and policy towards it during the 80s. First the Platzspitz (behind the trainstation) became a place where consumption was tolerated and thus it attracted many tourists. Then they closed the park but with a lack of help for people addicted just pushed them to the next best spot, 500m away at an old railway station and railway tracks which had been taken out of service.

This is why there is a push to put in place safe spaces for people to do drugs. Have some advisors on hand to help anyone who needs it, either by giving them alternatives to drugs/resources to quit, but also to test for any contamination of the f drug that I can't spell. As well as having narcan on hand to save lives. I don't expect to see something like that anytime soon in the US given that we can't even manage to properly roll out needle disposal bins in readily accessible locations where no one can see you dump them.
@dutchman7623
@dutchman7623 Жыл бұрын
@@zebraloverbridget The ones who make trouble in the Red Light District are tourists, mostly British, but also from other countries. They only have a few days to 'do Amsterdam' and want to do it all. XTC, weed, mushrooms, alcohol and cocaine. And see what they cant see at home. Most of them young men who just escaped parental supervision... They gather at the 'windows', shout obscene words, make obscene gestures, even drop their pants and start jerking. They piss and vomit everywhere and get out off control, bother others, even drop in the canals. It is NOT the kind of customer the sex-industry wants, they are no consumers. Most of them are not addicts but have used too much and too many different things in a short time, this combination can even be deadly. Combine this with many tourists who are just curious. And pickpockets that abuse the overcrowded narrow streets, where everybody is bumping into another and jams occur where incidents take place, and you have created a hell hole. And I do respect social workers who try to prevent addiction and help those who are already, but in the RLD it's not a problem caused by locals.

So, my takeaway is that it's not an easy task to balance accessibility with safety AND privacy. You want enough people around as it reduces crime, but you don't want too many as it reduces trade. And if you place it far way out in the outskirts of the city, you will struggle with both. Yet at the same time, you can't build in the middle as it's already full. Wouldn't it be a better idea to expand the current red light districts as well as renovate them. Such districts will always be tourist hot spots, but if you make them bigger, you will dilute tourism, right? Make it slightly less busy without it becoming a sketchy alley.
