RUSSIA IN UKRAINE... AND BEYOND*
A 75-minute discussion and lively Question and Answer period
Monday, 13 March 2023, 6 pm EST
Vladimir Putin, Stalin’s heir, has described the collapse of the Soviet Union as “the greatest geopolitical tragedy of the 20th century.” In an apparent effort to roll back history, he seized Crimea from Ukraine in 2014. Then, one year ago, he launched what was supposed to be a romp to victory in Kiev. With the incredible valour and resolve of the people of Ukraine, despite unrelenting Russian bombings and war crimes against civilians, Putin seems only to have succeeded in strengthening NATO, the EU and Western alliances.
At this pivotal turning point of history, many ask what are the likely scenarios on what’s next for Russia, Ukraine, and the broader implications. What’s the impact on Russia’s other neighbours if “Ukraine is not his last stop”? What are the implications for alliances and the global order-UN, NATO, Russia, China, India, Iran? And likewise, the implications for global security, including energy and food security.
To help answer questions like these, the CIC National Capital Branch’s new Europe Study Group in collaboration with the Security and Intelligence Study Group is delighted to welcome back Professor Stephen Kotkin. A highly sought-after authority on Russia. He was last featured at a CIC gathering in Ottawa in 2018. Professor Kotkin is currently Senior Fellow in History and International Affairs at Stanford and is Princeton University Professor Emeritus. He is now completing the much-awaited 3rd volume of his Stalin trilogy, which the New York Times said “will surely stand for years to come as a seminal account of some of the most devastating events of the 20th century.”
Robert Hage will moderate the event. As a diplomat, he served in many capacities overseas, including as Canada’s ambassador to Hungary and Slovenia. At headquarters, he was director general for Europe responsible for our relations with Russia and Ukraine. Trained as a lawyer with an LL.M from University College London, he also served as Director General for legal affairs. He is a Fellow with the Canadian Global Affairs Institute, Executive Fellow with the University of Calgary School of Public Policy, and a Board Member of the Canadian Ambassadors Alumni Association.
* STATEMENT CORRECTION (minute 01:15:22): Kindly note that the statement summarizing the discussion on RUSSIA IN UKRAINE... AND BEYOND should read as follows: "The key summary of Professor Kotkin's presentation is summed up in his observation that 'Russia needs Ukraine, but Ukraine needs Ukraine'." • Statement correction |...
