European Air War - 2 RAF Campaign Missions

I got sidetracked again. Today we take a look at me participating in 2 consecutive missions from undergoing campaign flying No. 303 Squadron with RAF in Microprose classic - European Air War.
Both mission took me on fighter sweeps, but on my second flight I got my plane damaged and barely made it back across the Channel - had to dead-stick land it in the fields, but eventually I saved the airframe.

Some trivia - lead programmer on Jane's Longbow also worked on this flight sim - Tsuyoshi Kawahito (aka TK), sounds familiar? This is the same guy who created Strike Fighters series.

GOG has got this out now. Looking forward to being at the stick of a Spitfire soon.

That's right. I alredy got it but didn't installed it yet. Apparently it's 1.28 version (some mod fixes) and even historical vids are working as stated in GOG user reviews section.

@@damsonn how do you get the original cockpit view to work in the GoG version? I don’t like the default 3D setting; I much prefer the static drawn cockpit.

Where do you get the 1.2 patch and how do you get it to launch in Win10. It won't launch for me even with compatibility settings.

I used method described here: eaw.neocities.org/install.html but apparently GOG version was downgraded to 1.2v (earlier it used community moded version).

@@damsonn Ok, cool. Thanks That's an interesting fix for the Setup.exe not running "specified path doesn't exist" (common old game error without a solution that I can find online. I'll make a post in gaming subreddit. Have to remember it.)

I used manual install method described here: eaw.neocities.org/install.html On top of that I use nGlide for 3dfx emulation. it works fine on Windows 10.

I guess you can run it on anything these days, also this is running natively on Windows 10, using this manual install method: eaw.neocities.org/install.html The only additional thing I use is the glide wrapper - nglide - which emulates 3dfx hardware.

@@rickfortier8664 No ini edits on my part. Stock game already supports 256 airplanes in the air simultaneously which is already enough ;)

@@damsonn I use to fly a FW190 vs a modified by ini stream of 3 B17 boxes . THAT was a dangerously target rich environment. :)

How it compares to Il2 1946, expecially in realistic gunnery and flight models?

it's a bit simpler but you can stall and get into a spin if you yank your stick all over the place (especially at low speeds). Firing doesn't upset your aircraft yaw balance like in IL-2 game so it's more easy on gunnery side. But it wins in the amount of aircraft it can throw at you at one time. Some air battles are just tens of aircraft filling the whole sky (IIRC the limit is 256 airplanes) while the flak fires all around you.
