I saw Gerell play Waldner in the 2010 Swedish closed and his serve was utterly inefective against Waldi. Then against Waldner is probably one of the best readers of spin the game has ever seen.

I really liked the editing on this video. "And now why Werner Schlager lost this match". That answered a lot of questions, since Schlager was dominating rallies like this kid was nothing.

@shoat117 It may have not been shown. He gets the videos from either online or dvr so sometimes the non live feeds can skip over points. It happens quite a lot actually.
@shoat11713 жыл бұрын
I really appreciate the effort, and all of the videos you post ttCountenance. However, I am curious as to why you would skip a point at deuce in the fifth? Please don't be offended by my comment. I just like to see every point at deuce in the last game. Perhaps I am in the minority.

Perfect example of how an illegal serve can take a less experienced player to victory over a better and more experienced player.
@quickzilver33310 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing that Par Gerell serves are illegal but we are looking at it at a different angle. Some of the Camera angles were it is almost directly in front of him shows that he is not blocking the point of contact from blade to the Ball. He is always stepping back to clear the serve. I have tried his serves in during the game and I got called for illegal serve because I did not step back like Par Gerrell to clear the serve. If you do not step back on this type of serve you will block the point of contact with you body.
@davesplatz9 жыл бұрын
YourMaster86 In my mind these serves are illegal simply because he steps hardly on the floor while contacting the ball to hide the amount of rubber vs. racket, so to hide the incorporated spin. Or is this legal and I missed out on that?
@quickzilver3339 жыл бұрын
Thomas Benson I agree with you on the part of tossing it so far into his body but the hidden part you are wrong. The camera angles made it look like it's hidden but it's not.
@ZhaoahZ8 жыл бұрын
Actually, he does hide it (especially with his shoulder). 6:35 is a good example: lower the speed to x0.25 and pause (with "K" - it's easier to time than with your mouse). At the point of contact, the cameras sight to Schlagers center line is even blocked by Gerells shoulder, which means there is not even a chance Schlager could see it.

Its not an excuse, but I really think an experienced player like Schlager, who played during the "illegal serve" era should be able to decently return more of the Gerell's serves. It can't be denied that Gerell has some skill.

My own opinion is this. The serve can provide 3 different kinds of spin. Back spin. Side spin and top spin and various combinations of them all from basically the same action. The twisting of the body gives extra velocity to the spin on the ball. The stomping of the right foot on the ground helps to disguise the shot as the opponent can't hear what kind of contact has been made ie soft for backspin or heavy for top. i have been using this serve for about 6 months now and i am surprised that players far better than me in the rallies struggle to return this type of hook / jab serve 😊🏓

@FeelgoodInc21213 жыл бұрын
In my opinion Par Gerell has got much better serves and serve returns than anyone in the Chinese National team. It's something that just can't be taught to any individual. Somehow it's more related to what you were "born with" and work with as an idea from yourself, rather than something that a good coach can teach you, or nail into your head with countless hours of practice. It's too bad though that Gerell's always at a disadvantage when it comes to playing after the first ball...
@Deobfuscator13 жыл бұрын
Are Gerell's servers legal though? Sorry if it's a stupid question. I'm only an amateur player.

@xSauseBrausex Schlager has more trouble with the lefty players. Gerell played really well and there's nothing to be said about it. If you really enjoy TT you shouldn't be dissing other players just because they beat your favorites. This sport already has negative people who fund it no need to cause more negativity toward its growth. I mean think about it this way by you giving this comment about 50% of the people reading it will think negatively about our sport. Do you really want that?

I'm pretty sure this video has begun the era of "legal" illegal serves, now umpires can't tell what's a bad serve and hardly ever care to call them.
@LookB3hindU13 жыл бұрын
I disagree BollForte. Pars services looked legal from the above angle as I could see a clear line of view when the ball passed his shoulder from where Werner was looking. I'll admit it's borderline, but borderline is legal. He has every right to cover the swinging paddle just so long as the ball can be seen.

Totally disagree with the last bit of this video...I mean it would be just a stupid excuse for Schlager lost the game against Gerell. Service is important in modern t.t but service is NOT the only thing you consider! Especially for the top level players, none of them rely on their service to play the game....I mean if you look at Schlager, he was one of the best player in Europe in the past and he is a great player who has good tactics and service variation. Therefore Gerell played better than Schlager in this match. Simple as this.
@ZhaoahZ8 жыл бұрын
I have to disagree heavily with your comment. Par Gerell made 17 points (at least, that's how many were shown at the end) with his illegal serve. The thing is Gerell completely hides the ball at the point of contact with his serve and even his racket, so Schlager couldn't even know for sure what kind of serve Gerell actually made. In total Gerell made more than one and a half sets worth of points with hiding the spin of the serve completely, making Schlager only guess how he should react to the serve.
