PPP is not a useful measure. Nominal in USD is what counts, because it determies what you can buy on the world market. Of course in countries with high GDP/capita you cannot get your hair cut cheap, but you get a washing machine or a car the same price as everywhere.

PPP is of course a useful metric, since it primarily relates to human capital and labour on that world market. People's salaries and pensions, the primary expense of the public sector, military and social spending are exactly what PPP better illustrates, not to mention activity like rents. It is what lets China spend 1/5 the US on military spending while fielding 5x as many active personnel. The most important and developed sector of the economy is the tertiary one - services, and nominal GDP cannot reflect their value very well. To use your comparison, you're not going to buy a washing machine or car every month, but you will get a haircut that frequently.
