You can find those bins in some cities in Spain. In Spain there is no trash day. The city is cleaned every night. Although recicling bins are emptied once or twice a week.

We also keep paper, plastic and (food and garden waste) separated. Each household has 3 containers for this purpose, one for plastic, one for paper and one for food and garden waste. These containers are also collected on a fixed day by a large garbage truck. Everybody happy here in The Netherlands.

It is an EU directive that mandates all countries in the EU need to have recycling systems. From Bulgaria to Luxembourg, from Spain to Sweden, from Estonia to Cyprus, all EU member states have some form of recycliing system.

We don't have these where I live, but it's pretty easy to put the bins out every week. Just need to remember when residual waste and plastic waste should be brought out. And if you have too much, you can bring it to the local 'milieustraat' That's where you can bring all sorts of waste, from glass, plastic, and wood, to electronics, gas cans, and chemical waste. Some will also let you bring styrofoam, but I know not all of them do (mine does) Just make sure it's all separated properly, so you can easily tell which waste will need to go where, and because you do have to pay for some things, while others can be left there for free.

I actually watched this Not Just Bikes video when I was looking to buy an appartment near Paris, and when I saw that the area of one of the appartments I visited had those containers, it was one of the strong positive points making me buy it (not the only one, of course).

We have this in France too, maybe not everywhere yet. It's very convenient. We have also some which are not underground but very big, but I think they want to switch them to underground ones. We also have something new and I'm wondering if other European countries are doing this too: people having a limit of weight of garbage! so you have a card to open the dumpster and you have a limit of quantity of garbage per month, they want us to be more careful of the quantity of trash we produce... I'm not sure how it's gonna work I'm afraid people leave they trash outside if they can't open the dumpster because they have reached the weight limit...

In the Netherlands there are a lot of different types of garbage disposal, depending on your municipality. In my village normal housing have their own containers with a chip. You pay not per weight (where my parents live, it is by weight for the personal containers) but per every time you have the container unloaded. Apartment buildings have this underground container but with a chipcard you have to use to open the container and you get an invoice once a year with the total price of the times you used the container. Looks like Amsterdam does it another way, underground container being always open. So most likely the people living there will pay some lump sum and then can freely use the containers..

I have underground containers in my area in France too, though they're completely free to use, without any card or any similar system. I wouldn't want to to go back to the "mobile" containers. Either you live in an individual home and have to remember to leave containers outside the right day for each type of garvage, or you live in appartement and there high chances you'll have to deal with full bins at some points. At least, now, if the container is full, which is quite rare, I just have to walk 50 m to the second nearest group of containers.

Just so you know, it is not all over The Netherlands, I live in a different city and we do have some of those containers around but houses have trash bins and recycling bins which are taken away on alternate weeks just like it mentions in Toronto but rather that leaving the container in front of your house, you take it to a common area where all others bring it to the same place so the garbage truck only has a few stops to make and collects 20-30 containers at once. The garbagemen are excellent at this and it is a wonder to behold how they do it.

we used to have the same bin system, changed about 5 years ago. we also had a recycling program, where we had to hang our garbage bags to a pole, at the end of the street. all the seagulls just ripped open the garbage bags ,and all streets where full of trash all the time. ( I live in a coastal city hence the seagulls.)

It only goes for apartment buildings though. Houses still have a green bin (for bio trash) and a grey bin (for rest trash, sometimes even with 2 compartments - 1 for rest trash, and the other for plastics).

In my town they're not open to use for everyone. You get a pass that can open the one closest to your home. This way other people or companies can't dump their garbage in our garbage disposal, leaving room for the garbage of people who actually live here.

I work in the city centre of Amsterdam and you won't find them there, or in any other really old/medieval city centre. The streets are too narrow to place the containers, and the trucks to empty them far too big and heavy. Same goes for the big bins. Therefore in the old centre there's still trashday and while we do not have raccoons, the seagulls and rats do a pretty good job of messing the streets up by tearing the garbage bags apart.

This video isn't correct at all. Only large cities an city centers have these. And even then there's still a garbage day in many of those cities and plenty of people with bins. It's a good system, but it also has its flaws. And they also get stuck because people don't use them properly or get filled up too quickly in certain areas, in which case people just put their garbage next to it. It's a good system overall, but... the video's making it seem a lot better than it actually is.

That’s futuristic? 🥹 We have underground tubes for trash. No garbage trucks or bins on the streets at all. Whole neighbourhoods garbage goes to the same place and that system knows what kind of trash there’s moving in the pipe and separates them to right containers. Of course not every neigbourhood has that kind of fancy system but there aren’t garbage days, trash pandas or even ugly bins outside. Bins are inside in their own rooms at ground floor or basement for whitch garbage truck guy has a key.
