Grew up playing at the same club as Rog. From 8 years old his name was being mentioned by every coach from U-10 s to the seniors. He lived and breathed the game , born for nothing else. He is the essence of the game. When you consider how slight he is, and the deficit of pace he was lumbered with, it is a testimony to not only his dedication and perseverance but even more so, to his innate understanding and love for rugby, that he went went all the way to the top of the sport. He still has so much to give to the game through his wisdom and experience. Of course when I was 10 years old I thought he was just a cocky talentless Langer though😂😳

Yeow, Ronan O'Gara is a super legend of the game, and his insights into the game between SA and Ireland were pretty awesome. Super diplomatic and high emotional intelligence. And it must also he said that Jim Hamilton is really killing it as an interviewer and pundit, he got Ronan to get intense and share a bit, and he's also such a big fan of the game. This has to be one of the best, and most real rugby interviews I’ve ever seen. The idea of media prepped players and coaches completely detracts from any personable accounts of what it is to be a real life player/coach in a world we rugby fans love. Why fear being honest? We all aspire to be genuine and to hear someone at the peak of their trade still speak like one of the people returns it to our game. Everyone’s game. Long live ronan ogara and let him be the example frome here on in!

Ronan O'Gara has 200 IQ here - realises that you can not go past the rush defence - you have to go through it. The 7-1 is not the Boks laying down a challenge - Rather it is the Boks knowing... that may be the best and only way of stopping Ireland. Ireland from 1-15 are professional killers( 27 from 29 wins going into this game), Boks have some Talent upfront(Etzebeth/RG/PSDT) and some x-factor in the backline. My guess is Ireland will keep it close to the forwards and snake side to side trying to tire out(heavier and slower forwards)/ disrupt the rush formation. Then send overhead chips through the middle, use Bundi as crash ball targeting a weak inside shoulder/ can even use him as a decoy to lure in the extra defender and kick some contestables vs 2 short wingers. Was really impressive listening to O'Gara here - guy knows his stuff and yes - no one wants to play the French till they absolutely have to!

That's the key to ROG's success. He respects and understands his players and they give it back times ten as he alluded to in this interview. It all starts there...the rest will fall into place as we have already seen with La Rochelle becoming European champs. I think Andy Farrell is of the same stamp with this Irish team. As ROG also alluded to is the amazing progress this Ireland team have made in the last few years and that's because of the mutual respect and understanding between him and his players. As an Irishman, Rog is an absolute legend. I got fully engulfed in to Rugby when the likes of Rog & Bod were just running the show for Ireland, I never thought I'd see an Irish team like it again even though they arguably under achieved on the big stage. But this Ireland team right now, wow. Rog sums it up so well in this interview, he's everything you'd hope to be and more beyond the game. Would be great if he was to lead the island to big success in the future as coach but for now, can't wait for tonight's game!

Absolute genius tactician. Respect that he calls a spade a spade. I ABSOLUTELY hated him as a player (because he was so Goddamn good), but I enjoy him as a coach immensely. edit: look at the size difference too - Big Jim isn't a dullard by any measure; but take notice at the difference in understanding between the "small" guys ROG ain't a battering ram vis-a-vis a physical specimen like Esterhuizen . I get the strong sense that players like ROG and Rassie (he was a superstar player in his days btw) read this beautiful game like coder in the Matrix and they know the rules so well that they have earned the right to bend it. It's like the Master is trying to explain a Master;s Work to an apprentice - and I'm not referring to Jim, I'm referring to this rest of us. We don;t appreciate that coaching top level or national teams is like playing the highest level of chess - or any sport for that matter. Because skill is one thing; but the truly greats understand winning strategy for the game on a fundamental level. As to ROG's reasoning at about 9:00 - yes it _IS_ (in my view) Ireland's time. BUT, with the strife South Africa is facing we need to hold onto this. We will never have a better time to be 4 time champions. This is it. This is the team to do it. We will win because it gives South Africa HOPE. We will win because our players understand what it means to have been there.

Superb interview. Ronan's insight into coaching and life comes from an evolved perspective. Great to listen to. I wish we had people in NZ willing to be this frank and articulate about rugby. Instead, we get the same old boring platitudes year after year. Good luck Ireland, SA is an exceptional team this year, but i believe you are better.

Jeeeeeez! That 24 minutes 38 seconds passed by in a blur. What a great stream of unpretentious consciousness from the charismatic ROG. The interviewer gave him plenty of space to speak. Some great nuggets of wisdom that can be applied in life as well as rugby. I really enjoyed this interview. It was well put together. Kudos to the interviewer, cameraman and editor too. This is one to rewatch. Thank you.
