Linebackers in American football are the position most likely to have the opportunity to put on ferocious hits. The position they line up in gives them a perfect run-up to build their momentum to its maximum before they impact an oncoming ball-carrier. Because of this, the position attracts the most naturally-vicious and aggressive players. As far as your comment on how much less the old-timers made compared to modern players: even as recently as the late 1960s, the NFL was a part-time job for many players. After the Super Bowl was created, pro football's appeal exploded. Teams began offering bigger and bigger salaries to the players who could bring viewers to their games, both at home and on television. My father worked at a GMC factory in Kansas City, Missouri with a guy who had played for the Kansas City Chiefs in the very first Super Bowl in 1967. Ten years later, he was working on an automobile assembly line with my Dad.
