I'm all for the benefits of rail travel including night trains. But 239eur really is too much money for this journey, specially for these old cars lacking modern facilities. Were there any power sockets, wifi onboard, decent toilets and showers, any sort of food & drinks offer? Interesting experiment and wish them the best luck, I know they're trying to get a dinner car. But I fear this isn't as attractive as it should be for a service in 2024. P.S.: it wouldn't be a train journey through Germany without a delay, absolute classic!

@doc7austin

mich hat das aingle schlafwagenabteil EUR 239 gekostet; das ist der billigste tarif für diese komfortkategorie; und ja, verpflegung muss man sich aelbst mitnehmen

I don't understand, why they didn't extend it on the other side too. It takes the Eurostar about 2 hours to make the journey from St. Pankrac to Bruxelless. Say the Sleeper would take three hours and use the same infrastructure that is in place for Eurostar. That would mean leaving London around 16:20 to arrive just before 11:00. Somewhat edge case to book a trip, but still doable. A plane taking off around that time from London would set down in Prague around 18:30, meaning you'd still have to go to a hotel at which point, you have to consider the price difference. And that's only direct to Prague! You'd stil have the passengers for Berlin!
@doc7austin

@looseycanon

@@doc7austinThey could change the loco in Lile. There is cargo that makes it through the tunel so that's not an issue. As for the coaches... @@looseycanon Maybe a few rail enthusiasts. Why choose this type of service when air travel is half the price and takes three times less time (including all airport procedures). One could discuss the marketing strategy here. Compared to other start-ups (Midnight Train), ES has the advantage of having a train on the tracks. But on the other hand, these dirty antiquated carriages are hurting the reputation of night trains in western europe. I booked nightjet for our next brussels-berlin trip (further to Poland) : when booking one month ago, our 3-bed sleeper cabin cost us less than 3 bunks in a shared 6-bunks compartment on the ES... for a train that arrives in Berlin at a decent hour (according to schedule). Sleepers and couchette cars have shower in corridor. In different videos there is their review. I do not know, why author of this video omited the filming of the shower and toilette. Btw. European sleeper is low budget company, like Ryanair or Wizzair for airlines, if you want dining car, you should use train of "legacy" train company, like OBB, their Nightjet is much more luxorious and quicker, as it can go 230 km/h. I am not sure what is top speed of ES trains, but as it have the ex-ZSSK cars it would not be more than 160 km/h for sure...

The indication of the fare points at the borders is very interesting (for example "Bad Bentheim (Gr)". However, since it is a market-price train, I would be curious to know if these fare points are indicated on the tickets. In fact, I understand that they are used still only for the issue of the legendary international kilometric fare tickets (formerly TCV, today NIR*), which has practically disappeared in France, Italy and Spain. Perhaps it resists in Germany and the former socialist countries.

Alstom has officially "adopted" the TRAXX product line into its own portfolio, so should be refered an Alstom TRAXX. The project originated under AdTranz and the companies that formed it. Alstom does not have the rights to use the "Bombardier" trademark. Alstom has been very slow in deciding which former Bombardier products it would market under its name and which will remain in a state of limbo. TRAXX was luckily saved.

@jfmezei
@jfmezei 8 ай бұрын
Or more like the Boeing 717 since Boeing did adopt the DC-9 derivative known as MD95. or Airbus getting the C-Series and making it into an Airbus product. When Boeing bought the Dash-8 from deHaviland Canada, it became the Boeing Dash-8. When Bombardier boughg it from Boeing, it became the Bombaardier Dash-8, and after it was liquidated a new company called de Havilajd Canada was created (from longview aviation that bought the assets) and the Dash-8 is now a deHaviland Canada plane. (Longview via Viking had also acquired from the failing Bombardier all rights to deHaviland products which Bo,bardier never leverages and they restarted production of the Twin Otter). When Alstom acquired Bombardier Transportation, it did not get the licence to use the Bombardier trademark because it didn't buy the Bombardier company, only a subsidiary spun off for purposes of liquidating it. The former Bomabrdier plants in North America are in a state of limbo, even if they sport the Alstom name on them because Alstom is investing in its own Hornel facility but not sending work to Plattsburgh NY, Thunder Bay Ontario or La Pocatière QC (which got a grant from Québec govt to stay open doing nothing). Alsom will likely keep the ex-Bombardier planst in UK because it didn't have much of a presence there, but unsure what products it will pitch. For now, they are just fulfulling existing contracts and trying to reduce lossses (Bombardier at the end won contracts by bidding below cost). @@AndreiTupolev

To those who don't see the point of this train ... sorry you are so short sighted. Sleeper trains are a growing phenomena. They have been gaining quite a bit in popularity in Asia for some time now, and even the US is introducing some. The convenience of being able to board in the center of the city, without needing to drive out to the airport. The lack of long check-in lines, cramped seats, ridiculous baggage restrictions, risk of baggage getting lost etc only add to the convenience. There's far less impact likely from bad weather or equipment switchouts causing delays and reschedules. The environmental impact of your travel is far less (yes planes pollute a lot per passenger). Also, you get to see some nice scenery. For a business traveler the plane will remain the best option. But for someone going on a vacation the trip becomes part of the journey. Instead of dealing with the hassle of air travel at the end of the holiday, you get to sit back in a relatively spacious cabin, not worrying if the souvenirs you bought are too big/heavy. And you get to enjoy some scenery while enroute. Sure, it's 15hrs vs a 2.5hr flight, but if you count in travel to/from the airport, check-in, boarding, waiting for baggage, etc it's more like 15hrs vs 7.5hrs ... plus you save on one night's hotel cost each way. Sure it's not a replacement for plane travel, but it's one heck of an appealing option for travelers looking to unwind and relax.

From my experience with long distance trains in Russia - it has to be cheaper than the airplane or people won't bother. Also you misrepresent how big of a difference in time - from my apt door in Riga to a hotel in Amsterdam it's around 4.5h. If there was a train, it would be around 18 hours. With DB constant delays more like 24h. Also with a shitty quality train like the sleeper in this video, I'd never take it at all.

Those cars with so much graffiti in the beginning were from the Belgian State Railways, not European Sleeper. Belgium, like other Western and Southern European countries, is experiencing a lot of graffiti crime issues in recent years. It's a hard problem to fight because every train cannot be guarded 24/7 against criminals, and cleaning them means taking them out of service for hours which would mean more cancellations.

Based on what I can see in the video, this train is exactly the reason why sleeping cars went out of fashion. Old cars do not have the comfort or facilities that today's travelers demand. I did my fair share of sleeping trains in the 1980s and '90s. It was not a good experience. But I have also made several recent trips where the room (or rather cabin) had an ensuite toilet and shower, and the restaurant was open late and early, and the experience was wonderful. This particular service should be returned to the switchyard until the operator can offer something more relevant.

I already saw some Czech reviews of this route and they all say it's a nonsense and they will just fly next time. As a someone who traveled to Croatia several times with sleeping train, I would probably survive that, but Brussels or Amsterodam are very often destinations and you can find cheap airplane tickets, so I don't really know what's the point of such train and I am saying it as a person who really likes traveling by train. I would always pick a train if it's 500 km or less, but this thing is going almost to China before it reaches it's destination, if it was at least going directly to Brussels...and average speed 60 km/h, it's a nonsense. They have fast trains in western europe, so it's a nonsense even for someone who wants to get from Berlin to Amsterodam or something, why would people do that in such a slow train? I have to check ticket prices, when I was trying to check it few days ago, it was just saying some error in dutch, that also says something about that company. I was defending sleeping trains to Croatia, yes, it's a hell ride and only big train enthusiasts will survive that, but I still find it better than car or bus, because you arrive there early and you are fresh (if you can sleep in a train ofcourse), but in Croatia the thing is that you can't get to your summer destination directly by airplane because airports are in bigger cities, so even when you fly, it's another few hours by bus, so it's pointless to fly there and there is no competition on those routes, so plane tickets are expensive, but that's not the thing when you fly to Brussels or Amsterodam, so main point of going there by train is out.

@@christophermcdonald1122 I understand purpose of sleeping trains and I agree with you, but we live in something called capitalism and we have very limited amount of vacation and money and you just can't go somewhere 20 hours by train when it's 1 hour flight and you can find airplane tickets sometimes even cheaper (when you don't have big baggage). I want proper fast trains (like 240 km/h+) thru wole Europe, that's my dream, to get from Prague to Berlin in 2 hours or less. When you go somewhere max 8 hours by train, you don't need anything special, you just survive that, but when it's 15+ hours, you really need some service on board, enough toilets, running water etc....standard of some of these sleeping trains is worse than trains from 19th century. There are milion trains from Prague to Berlin or other german cities, I don't understand why it is going in things ridiculous way, it should go directly to Amsterdam at least, if it's possible. If future of traveling means that you will have to go around whole Europe to get from A to B, then no, this is definitely NOT the future, that's return to 19th century.

Over 33 Minutes just filming out of the window, instead of telling the people something about the train, the comfort of the sleeping cars, couchette cars or the other 15 waggons. 33 Minutes without absolutely no information ist just boring, no information about the timetable, the prices, the service on board, absolutely no further informations instead of showing the length of the nighttrain. Some of these couchette cars and especially the sleeping car are older than me with a an age of 58 years. Some of the very old ex German couchette cars with very old withdrawn preferred compartments ( in German: teilbares Vorzugsabteil ) are presenting the state of art night travelling in the beginning of the 1970‘s! Now these compartments fulfill not more the standard of modern night coaches. At least the both sleeping cars you will find normally in railway museums. Without modern Equipment and without a shower or toilet inside the cabin, you will ask to pay for the exactly same sleeping car for the whole compartment with three beds for a journey from Berlin to Innsbruck about 1000€ one way fare! As someone else described the comfort on board this over 60 years old sleeping car like boat on stormy water. Quite obviously the suspension of the bogies of the couchette cars is so soft that he had the impression that the old C.I.W.L. Sleeping car derailed! )
