Fascinating. I would love to see the trajectory planning in more detail. I imagine they simulate 1000s of trajectories and calculate the fuel needed for each, then continue to refine the best ones. That process would make a great video.
@ToadalChaos4 ай бұрын
Although there are many many millions of candidate trajectories simulated, orbital dynamics is so complex it would be impossible to plan an entire mission as comples as JUICE by "brute force" like this. Mission Analysts also have a deep understanding of the mathematics of space travel, and they leverage that to make "educated guesses" as to which trajectories will work, before simulating them by computer. It is a blend of traditional ingenuity and modern computing!

@@ToadalChaos And to be even more exact: These flybys are many body problems that are also changing with time. Luckly we can use some proper mathematics like orbital resonances to reduce the solution space to a mangeable degree. Afterwards its all about time of launch and spacecraft capabilities. This overall dictates what kinda of routes through the solar system one can take. With this one in particular, Juice had a rather minimal amount of fuel and wanted to use most of it for its actual mission around jupiter. With that they decided on a course through the inner solar system to get the extra juice (pun intended) to get captured by trading energy to jupiter and the moons. Its similar to how jupiter can capture asteriods too.
