If a course doesn't want someone to screw up their greens by chipping, then don't create greens where there are spots that only chipping can solve.

It's very lightly that the management and staff didn't have any input when it came to the design of courses and I can assure you that If you were seen pitching on the Greens you would be asked to leave at once that's my opinion regarding this rule. I know if a ball lies on a green not in play, you must take a free drop not nearer to the pin, why bother with that rule or has that been scrapped since COVID 19 as well

@@joecurran I've personally never done it. I always just pull the ball off like you mentioned. But still, my point stands. ESPECIALLY in a tournament when people are either playing for a lot of money or to try and follow their dreams.

If you know how to use bounce properly you can do it and then repair any dent left if there is one. Most can’t though.

@@joecurran They CANT ask you to leave because chipping on the greens IS IN THE RULES OF GOLF. Unless they have a separate local rule which forbids it, you can chip on EVERY green of each hole you are playing regardless of what they tell you.

The socks on cart path thing is a no-brainer, albeit a bit of a strange sight. Player must have felt that his shoes (maybe plastic cleats) felt slippery on the cart path. Probably felt it would disrupt his swing. Guarantee those socks gripped the sidewalk and he had a solid foundation the whole time.

Ben Crenshaw used his four iron against Eammon Darcy in the 1987 Ryder cup after snapping his putter, and nearly beat him. And funnily enough I used my two iron after the head came off my putter mid round, single putted the next six greens!

There was a full year of golf where ( and this is not at all facetious) I was better at putting with a wedge than I was with my putter: at least from 20 ft and in. Dunno how it why but I was.

@@nowaythatnamewastakn If the golfer mis-hits the shot initially, then deliberately hits it to try and keep it on track. Personally I think double tapping should be penalised as it used to be.

@@sandersson2813 thanks for that didn't know you were allowed to do that and I have played the game for 3 decades and never seen any other players do it either except to tap a ball into the hole after they pitched the ball close enough to the pin and wouldn't need to get there putter out of the bag. Is it a club ruling then that prevents the use of wedges on Greens.?

@@joecurran Yes, a club could stipulate you aren't allowed to use a wedge on a green if they own the course but there is nothing in the rules which says you can't play any club you like off the green. I do it at St Andrews all the time. Generally if you land on a green on a parallel hole you lift and drop, but if it's the green you're playing to, you're within your rights to use any club you like AND take a divot.

@@sandersson2813 thanks for clearing that up,I might owe a young man an apology because I stopped him from pitching his ball on the green , must ask in the pro shop in future before I play because sometimes you can find your ball having to be putt through the first cut to have any chance of getting it close to the pin

@@joecurran A lot of greens are shaped that you might not have a direct line to the pin by using a putter, or have such severe swales that a chip is a better option. That's why there is no rule in golf that you have to putt UNLESS the club make a local rule, which they are entitled to do, but unless this is the case you can use whatever club you like.

On greens it should be declared illegal to use other than a putter by USPGA….

Why? There’s several greens with bunkers in the middle of them. You can chip over them… or putt twice to get around them. You’re supposed to take less shots for golf.

Because there is no rule to say you can't (unless it's a local rule). You can use any club anywhere. You can take a MASSIVE divot put of the green if you like if it is the green you are playing to. Only local rules can stop you.

beginners are confused because its advised not to do that because theyll dig into the green. that is grounds for getting kicked off a course if you're taking divots out of a green. and i would want someone to be kicked off the course if they are doing that. now if you're a scratch golfer who cares if you wedge off the green cause you know how to clip it clean.

@@CB-rv2lj No, you CANT be kicked off a course for that UNLESS the club have stipulated you can only use a putter. There is NOTHING in the rules of golf which state you can't use a wedge if you like and handicap doesn't even come into it. Some might consider it bad form to do it, but as its not illegal under the rules of the game they have no justification to stop you or eject you. It's every bit as legal as hitting any other shot anywhere else on the course. I've certainly has cause to take wedges on the green and I'll continue to do so.

Gary Player said if he would play at a course with a bunker or flower arrangement in the middle of the green and was stymied, hewould pitch itover, no hesitation. And he would make sure to take a few practice swings aswell!

Of course I would be shocked if a club tried to remove someone for this reason, but they are well within their rights to do so if they want to The grounds for ejection are, "I own this land and don't want you on it, here's your money back"
