I’ve hit a root before…. Messed up the top of my hand. Thought I might of fractured it but never went and checked. Still causes me a little bit of problems to this day. So yeah, pretty dangerous I’d say😅

At that time, I was his scorer and was quietly watching his recovery shot from just to the left of this screen. Right when he hit it, I heard a dull sound followed by the noise of the club hitting the asphalt, but the ball beautifully drew a fade trajectory and landed perfectly on the left side of the green, stopping a bit beyond! We all immediately worried about his right wrist along with the TV crew, but he just shook his wrist a bit and continued to hit fantastic shots, which really relieved everyone.

Some of y’all have never taken a proper golf swing next to trees & rocks before, and it shows… people have injured their wrists, hands, fingers, and even their radial bones by making contact with the hard surfaces, and it’s definitely possible that they never hold a golf club again, afterwards. I was playing golf today. I got hit in the neck on the fly by some guy's errant drive, and it was the very first hole. Hurt like hell. Any lower, it could have broken my collar bone. Stupid course I played has the first hole running parallel in opposite directions to the second hole. So, if you hit your ball a little right on the first hole, you can get hit by someone who drives their shot a little right on the second hole. Such a terrible course design.

Don't miss the fairway and almost all of those obstacles are never going to be an option. Shouldn't reward someone for missing their target. Players can take a club length whenever they want, it just incurs a penalty stroke.

I need a little more context. He is taking a stance on a cart path. Does he not get relief? Nearest point is with feet just on the grass, so the tee to mark the spot would be behind the tree probably. But then you get one club length (or two?) from that spot. Video doesn't show what is to the right, but I would imagine you would have a better chance of not being against a root. I've been playing for decades and always take relief if my stance is on a cart path. Have to assume that hitting it as it lies was his best option.

Actually, I did hit a root in high school, and that wrist hurt for weeks. I quit football. My friends who stayed in have all had knee or back surgeries from those football years. Yeah, they were tougher than me then, but they aren't now.

With a more finesse/touch based game like golf, numbing hands/wrists/fingers is probably going to have a much bigger impact on the player’s skill level, and therefore result outcome, than in a more physical sport. For a golfer who could usually scrape through the cut before, they are unlikely to do so after. Career ending doesn’t necessarily mean they can no longer play golf, just that they can no longer compete at a level that pays the bills.
