Thank you for the comparison. And BTW I like the red knobs onthe Serge modules! Just for completeness and clarification: The Serge Wavemultipliers are actually three independend modules: The top section is a kind of VCA with a tube type sound, the middle section offers odd harmonics shaping, and the bottom section provides even harmonics multiplying. The Serge Wavehapers are actually three identical shapers that could be used independently or in series (link). The lowest has a built-in 2nd shaper stage that could be dialed in.

Yah, I agree the Serge got shorted in this one. I'm setting up for a separate video that compares just the two Serge folders more thoroughly.

Just the demo I needed! Been looking at wavefolders so I’m not limited to only being able to fold the carrier oscillator in the Sputnik Dual Osc and Make Noise DPO. Now I should be able to make an educated guess about which one to go with.

Thanks for the comparison. WMD and Audio Damage were both a pleasant surprise. They seem to be two of the most versatile out of the bunch. Very clean sounding, decently smooth enough, and able to quickly get sharp and crunchy if you need that texture. Fricko and AJH aren't half bad either. I expected more from Dannysound though. It's every bit as buttery as their VCOs and crisper than the Serge and Toppobrillo modules, but overall it's kind of insipid for a wavefolder. Maybe that just comes with the territory of West Coast style synths?

Thanks for your detailed testing. It could be even more informative if you were triggering the scope in normal mode by the dry wave because it's quite hard to understand what's happening with the waveform when it's always scrolling.

Talk to me about normal mode vs. "auto." (I have the Mordax data) I don't really understand the difference between the two, or why they behave differently. Any pointers?
@RioRoye
@RioRoye 2 жыл бұрын
@@JohnSchussler I was just about to comment the same thing. You can stabilize the DATA by taking a rising edge signal running at the same frequency as the signal you're trying to monitor into a separate chanel of the DATA and using that as the timing basis for the display. So, in this example, you could take a pulse or saw or square from the NTO into channel 3 or 4 of the DATA and set the TRIG function to normalize to that channel. Thanks for these comparisons, by the way. They're really helpful.

Many thanks for the index. Totally forgot to do that. Wrt favorites, depends on the use. The Ultrafold has some interesting growly parts, and the Dannysound is very refined. That said, the Serge have lots of interesting tones in them, and I'm actually planning on doing a head-to-head between the two of them to explore them further.

You are welcome, a head-to-head would be great! With my little KZbin research the Bastls got my attention, but above all the Dannysound with the dual oscillator mix thing.

Bastl Timbre really stands out for my ears. Ultrafold is a solid runner up. Both seem to be getting a nice, wide range of timbres. Which of these have remained in your aresenal? Thanks for this!

I've kept several. Ultrafold, the new Intellijel Bifold, Toppobrillo, and Random*Source are all still here. Probably more in the box...one of the problems with Eurorack is the tendency to collect....

I can't freaking decide on a wave folder. I am most likely getting the Synthrotek Fold which also has Ring Modulation in 4hp. It seems like several of these sound better and have more cv controllability. I don't have tons of money or space so that's why I'm leaning towards Synthrotek. Iv heard negative things about the engineering of those products. What's a nerd with G.A.S to do!?

Hi and hello, I have questions. I own a mother 32 and would like to add a view things like wavefolding, maybe an additional LFO. Is there anything to watch out for? Or just any good tips and ideas? Much love and thanks!

Some. Moog uses a different scale for 1v/oct tuning, so Erica Synths has a module you'll need if you use that input: www.ericasynths.lv/shop/eurorack-modules/by-series/pico-series/pico-mscale/ In general, though, you can send outputs from the Moog to other modules, and their audio or cv in to the Moog without any problem.

Hi, Mutable instruments Warps can do wavefold?
@JohnSchussler
@JohnSchussler 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. As the manual says: "The carrier and modulator are summed, a tiny bit of cross-modulation product is added to spice things up, and the resulting signal is sent to a wavefolder the amount of which is controlled by TIMBRE."

your demo might be great but I'm sorry to say: the sequence you're using is so annoying - after 30 seconds my head explodes and my ears get too tired to listen. Such a pity that so many youtubers use very unmusical sounds for demo.

Yes! It’s hard to say it but absolutely. I want to use these modules for modern music and see how they will fit in the context of label worthy releases. It’s certainly great to test so many modules, but there wasn’t a single low frequency demo. And that’s what gnarly wavefolder are good at making. If you’re making bass house, or various harder EDM or synthwave or even rock music, none of these examples give you and idea of what these wavefolders can do. What is with synth demo’s and their obsession with avoiding bass and sub textures? Same stuff guitar demo’s get stuck in. Same talented person ripping out licks that sound vaguely like the 70s for people buying a product that is trying to be a rockstar in the 2020s lol. And if anyone wants to say “well you do it” I am slowly getting around to it. There’s two alright rubicon2 euro patch videos on my channel now. Guarantee you havnt heard eurorack go like that before.

@@ryanpwm totally agree with you on the guitar example - I'm coming from guitar actually and I am skipping about 99% of all demos because 1. I can't stand what they are playing and 2. it's not what I am looking for in a demo. What I'm looking for in gear is its musicality. I understand this is exactly what you wanted to demonstrate, but in my opinion it needs to be pleasant sounding to sell it to me :-)
