Well done to the breakaway. It's always nice to see them cooperate and outlast the peloton. On the other hand, pathetic from the sprint teams. Did Quick Step, dsm, Bahrein, etc. really think that they only had a chance to win the stage if they didn't contribute anything to the chase? Only saw Trek and Alpecin pull, even though there are about 8 riders able to win a bunch sprint here.
@tychoMX7 ай бұрын
It seems to have been mostly Alpecin's fault. They went full gas to drop the other sprinter teams in the early climb.... and then ran out of gas. After hearing the complaints, the reply from the DS to the other teams was "They are not un-right" 😂

It's unusual this early in a grand tour. Normally the breaks survive in the last week when riders who are down by hours on GC go up the road - none of the GC teams care to chase. If it's a medium mountain day, then even more likely as sprinters get dropped and their teams don't need to pull.

Presumably they wanted to keep their sprint train intact. It is always a risk to consider. More of gigantic Alpecin blunder, to hurt the sprinter teams and then set the breakaway up for medium range attack and fail to keep it under control.

Serious question. I've been watching cycling for decades, and I've never understood this.....why do the riders in the peleton sprint so hard for the line when the riders in the breakaway have already won the stage and taken all the podium positions? This is true even if there are many riders that cross the line from the breakaway. It almost seems like they do it just for bragging rights. You'd think they'd save their legs for the next day. What am I not getting?
