What a FINISH! One of the best line ups and best finishes I've seen in a long time. The solo breakaways are cool... for the guy breaking away. But they make for boring spectatorship. I'm not a hug Pidcock fan per se but I found myself rooting for him at the end. Imagine the euphoria of a race like that--against other riders at that level--just ripping each others legs off until the very last centimeter of tarmac. Love it.

The close finish comes down to the reality of the disproportional advantage of drafting vs solo riding. When racers are at peak physical condition and speeds are high, there isn’t enough physiological difference for one rider to do the ~30% higher effort needed to both overcome the draft advantage of their opponent and drop them. Now, if it were inches after 300km of time trialing solo, then that would be remarkable!

Congratulations, Philipsen! Bam! What a great finish to a great race. Breakaways are okay, but I prefer a good sprint finish. The bunch wasn't reduced enough for MVDP to win, and he really ended up becoming a lead-out man for his teammate. Which is okay as he's a solid sprinter, but not a pure sprinter, and he is not only a champion, but a team player too. There was way too much horsepower in the pack and the hills weren't big enough for Pogicar to simply ride away like he did a couple of weeks ago. Pogicar is the best overall racer in the world right now, but there are people who are equal or better depending on the circumstances. He'll still clean up this year as long as he's healthy.
