Eurovision Song Contest 2012 UK - Engelbert Humperdinck on 'The One Show' BBC chat show

Tuesday 20th March - Englebert appeared on the daily tea time chat show on BBC1 talking about his career and his thoughts on being asked by the BBC to represent the UK in the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest in Baku. This was the first time he has spoken publicly since being announced as the UK entry. Humperdinck's song 'Love will set you free' is written and produced by Martin Terefe and Sacha Skarbek

I like this song! I think its great that he's performing first to help the UK stand out from the rest of the competition. Good luck from New Zealand! We and Australia both love the UK. We always root for them in Eurovision even though we aren't part of the EBU xD

It just goes to show that the UK doesn't have any good performers, so they have to rely on legendary performers like Engelbert. There is no replacement for Engelbert, a true class act and gentleman. That voice sounds as good as it did in the 60's. You're one of the greats, Engelbert, and anyone who disagrees has no clue.

Its a class song sang by a class singer. Will it win ? I dont have a clue. I remember seeing Engelbert Humperdinck on the same bill as Jimmy Henrix and the Walker Bros in London in 1967 he came onto the stage in a gold suit and slid across the stage, Cat Stevens was also on the bill. Engelbert and the song he sang was not a true representation of British popular music - far from it, which is why it did so badly. Germany is another of the 'big 5' and yet it won a couple of years ago because it had a good contemporary song/singer.A good song will always win Eurovision no matter which country they represent.

I don't think it was so much political - just an inappropriate song for Eurovision whose audience is getting younger and who didn't connect with a forgettable, slow ballad. Exactly the same scenario for Bonnie at this years Eurovision. Whoever is selecting the artist and the song on behalf of the British public are getting it soooooooooo wrong. Hopefully completely different tact for 2014!

I believe from what I have been told that if you look at the countries that provide the most funds for Eurovision then these very same countries always come off worst in terms of votes for their acts yet they're the ones with the best music. Eurovision is known to be a political joke. Doesn't mean you can't enjoy Eurovision if that's your penchant - personally apart from being interested in Engelbert - who is talented - I don't follow Eurovision because the music is generally so tacky.

I will admit, this is a very good song, sang very well by a good musician. But from what songs i've seen finish high in the last few eurovision's, this isn't a song i think many country's will vote for. eg. jedward's awful song finishing fairly high last year -_-

He sings it quite well, to be fair, but bit of a risk putting him on first. By the time they vote he might be dead. How will we tell? He looks ready-embalmed on the video anyway, presumably to save time.
