I think you hit the nail on the head there when you said we as a fandom are a minority. We’ve seen it time and time again where our fan favourites fail in the voting. We tend to forget that so many people go into the final completely blank. And some songs like for example Spain’s entry don’t get the time they need for people to appreciate them the way we as a fandom do. It just goes to show how little of an impact we have…

Yeah, I think so too. That also explains why commercial, generic and umtempo songs do really well in the televote, whereas more traditional sounds (which are appreciated by a huge part in the fandom) are not much appreciated, because of the casual viewers and general public

@@faiththomas1749 I can agree with you to some extent, but it seems that people didn’t have issues with former contestants re-participating before, until Loreen, because of her popularity, which is understandable in some ways, but also reeks of jealousy/insecurity in others. Not many people were outraged when Sergey Lazarev, Alexander Rybak or Poli Genova participated more than once, and I say this as a non-Loreen stan. I wasn’t even that fond of tattoo this year, lol.

The problem with Spain's performance, and Alesia discusses this very well in the video were the sound issues. Spain's national qualifying performance was mesmerizing and organic, and I watched it several times. But at Saturday's finals, it wasn't the same. From the top of the song, the hand-clapping was significantly louder than the vocals, and that sound became irritating very quickly. I kept waiting for the clapping to stop. I don't think the performance fully recovered from it.

Juries saved this years competition. Without them Spain would have come dead last and Australia and Austria would have tanked too. On top of that Polanf and Croatia would have finishef in the top 10, which just simply would be disrespectful. Overall the juries and the televote do a great job at balancing eachother out and ultimately creating a decent scoreboard every year. Because of the both sides having 50 % of votes we have had a deserving winner almost every year!

I was so impressed with Marco. I wasn't into the song at first (and I LOVE L'Essenziale), and was rooting for Madame / Lazza / Elodie in Sanremo (who would have all been amazing) BUT Marco truly delivered a level of quality and noticeable humility that really stood out and the fact that both jury and televote gave him almost identical scores shows how great he was. I loved the staging. It was intelligent and subtle and his vulnerability was moving. I like the Marco we got this year. He lost the swagger of 2013 and came with a real honesty and beauty and I think his carrying the flag at the start really was a 'this is me moment'.

I rooted for Finland, I really felt that Finnish victory before the grand final and after the rehearsals, and I was right to some extent since Kaarija had +130 televotes more than Sweden. I never saw Finland winning the jury, but I was always saying that Finland needed over 200 jury points because I knew Loreen would have more than 300 points from jury. Once I saw he scored 150 points from jury I quite knew it was a done deal, even if I had some little belief Sweden could get like 170 televotes during split screen. It was always going to be between Sweden and Finland. I think jury could really give him those damn 57 points more he needed.

Good commentary. It's totally possible to discuss these issues constructively. Because not all criticisms are emotional or 'hate' driven ones. How anyone feels about Loreen's or Kaarija's songs truly isn't the issue here. This year is over, and fortunately a decent song won. This discussion is for the sake of next year's and future Eurovision contests. I've been going back and forth about the juries, and for me it comes down to the single question, "What exactly are juries there to do?" The responses to this question I hear most are: *to keep the contest fair * to prevent bloc voting * to stop a 'joke' song from winning. So my next question is, "Did the jury accomplish these things this year, or did they really just prevent the rightful song from winning the contest?" I get it, juries are "music experts." But we don't really know what's their field of expertise or the criteria they use when voting. Are they songwriters and musicians, or producers and promoters? Are they rating the song by degree of difficulty or musical complexity, or is it based on its likelihood of becoming an international crossover Top 40 hit? Because if it's the latter reason, then forget about culturally ethnic songs ever winning the contest. Ironically those are the songs which attract so many of us to follow Eurovision every year- if we wanted generic, AI generated Top 40 music, we could simply turn on our radios and have at it. The real issue at hand is whether or not 5 jurors should yield as much voting power as thousands upon thousands of televoters. Because in the end, we don't even really know if most jurors believed "Tattoo" was the best song. Here's why. Say the 5 jurors all ranked "Tattoo" with 7's across the board, for a combined total of 35. Then let's say each juror's higher ranked songs (8/10/12 pts) were all completely different from one another. In this situation, it's highly possible Sweden's combined 7's could end up with the highest numeric value, thus resulting in a douze point. This happens in competitions all the time with winners, where nobody thought you were the best, but everyone agreed you were good enough to be placed somewhere safe in the middle. Then the result is that everyone's 4th choice ends up taking first prize. I suspect this same sceario could have happened with Sweden and the juries, because - despite its charms and Loreen's vocals- "Tattoo" feels very much like a safe in the middle choice. Whereas televoting is altogether different, because it's all based on the total votes a song receives. Unlike jurors, televoters don't vote for whom they think should come in 4th place. They vote for the song(s) they believe are the best and that most deserve to win. Even if they vote for 4 different songs, it makes no difference because all votes get counted exactly the same. Add up the votes and the most gets the douze. And on Saturday, Finland received douze points 18 times from the televoters, a score surpassed only by the unstoppable Ukraine last year. And Finland still lost. That is the single greatest argument I can make for why juror points should not count equally to televotes. Because televote points cannot be disputed. And because, in a contest that's all about awarding the best song, it's possible that no juror thought Sweden had the best song. That's highly improbable perhaps, but then again, Sweden's lack of a single douze televote point is rather unbelievable, too. Maybe the juries shouldn't have that much power. Maybe juries don't want that much power. But if viewers start thinking that there's no point to voting, since no matter what they choose the juries ultimately have the power to silence it, that could be a very, very bad thing for Eurovision.

We need reform in voting format, we really do. They're gonna keep the jury and we all know that, and I don't mind! I wouldn't even mind jury having 50 percent like so far. The problem is that people in jury seats tend to be super subjective and always go for something that is accessible, poppy and conventional. There were professional jurors who ranked Kaarija in TOP 3, what was problem with others? Konstrakta delivered masterpiece last year and she didn't even get 100 jury points? Seriously? She could have comfortably be 2nd last year if the jury was truly professional. I'm rather sceptical about broadcasters picking more diverse jury and I don't think EBU is gonna bother itself with controlling who sits in jury apart from that jury members have to be from music industry, so I think EBU should just reduce jury power from 50% to 33% or 40%. I don't want to see a song winning televoting by big difference and then not winning.

I honestly thought the Jury result and the televote results were both pretty weird. Especially the televote. Like 16 to Austria and Serbia, also only 5 to Spain, 15 for Germany and 20 for Australia. That was all so unexpected and also so different from the semis. I'm really happy for Sweden's win though and also this whole top 3 feels pretty good. I'm also proud of Vesna for coming top 10. About the Juries: I feel like it should stay 50/50% and I also think it would give a weird signal to the past Jury winners if we just reduced the Juries influence. However I do think we should have more Jury members. I also lowkey want the Juries back in the semis just because of Georgia this year, but I don't really need that

Let me remind yall who keep saying "scrap the juries!!!" etc - without those "horrible" juries Spain would have come dead last. One of the best vocalists coming dead last would be adding fuel to the fire for those people who dont give a single damn about this contest (we all love) and keep mocking it saying its all political and other stupid stuff. The juries saved Austria as well, keep that in mind. And remember why the juries were implemented in the first place. To avoid tactical voting which, it pains me to say it, is kinda what Finalnds public did being THE ONLY ONE not giving Sweden even a single point (this automatically reminded me of Italy's last year shenanigans giving Spainc0 points🤡) Loreen didn't have to be your favorite but to say she wasn't one of 10 best performances of the night is ridiculous and biased. At least both Swedish and Finish juries showed some class. This whole "drama" is just spoiling the fact Loreen made history with her hard work and perseverance. The vast majority of people bashing her online have no idea she attempted to represent Sweden both in 2011 and 2017 but she failed to win Melodifestivalen (which ironically is sometimes harder to win than the actual Eurovision) I love Kaarija. The fact that Sweden fans think that a nation of 5.6 million people is able to coordinate not voting a specific country is lowkey hilarious. Especially since finnish public did vote for Sweden, it's just that they were 13th in our televote, so no points. But i guess it's easier to believe that Finns didn't like 12 other acts (many of them heavier music, that Finns are known to love) more than they liked Tattoo than to not sh*t on Finland over points that Sweden didn't even need. Y'all are reaching to find reasons to defend the current jury system. Loreen is wonderful person and it makes me sad to see that on one side, some people take out their frustrations over the jury system and this years results on her, and on the other some people say equally vile things about her competitors instead of celebrating her win and her accomplishments. That's not an easy position to be in and frankly she deserves better.

Perfectly fine with outcome but I do think we need jury reform as gap between public sentiment and “expert” juries seem to be getting bigger and bigger. Maybe tweak percentages between televote and jury, have jury members judge in isolation from one another to not allow groupthink, have jury members almost sequestered meaning not allowed to see betting odds or songs before live shows. I think such changes might help juries stop voting for countries and songs that are “safe” for them.

I think the reason why people are crying more about the Sweden and Finland thing is that this time Finland has 133 more televote points than Sweden. That is quite some point since most entries didn't even receive 100 points in the final so can you imagine hahaha. I voted for Spain(and I am not Spanish or anything) Me and my father adored that song and we considered it a piece of art. I was shocked when I saw the lowest televote score. She deserved better. I also expected Austria to do better at the televote actually. I was happy with the score of Norway. I was a little surprised by the high jury score for Israel, because I thought juries would vote more for Spain, but I don't know where the juries look at. Serbia to me didn't sound 100% like what you said there was something wrong with the sound. In general I heard problems with the sounds which is sad because it did have effect on the song and for some artists more than others. I can't remember hearing that previous years. I do know that Blanca is certainly a performer I would like to see live because from what I have seen she sounds very impactful live. In generally I had issues with getting headaches at this Eurovision because there was too much happening with the camera work. Am I the only one that experienced being annoyed by the constant moving camera even when the artist was performing?. It seemed somewhat chaotic. The hosts did well.

It seems to be an accepted opinion by most Eurofans and reviewers that most people listen to the songs for the first time on the Final night but then why would anyone not enough interested in Eurovision as to check the songs before the contest bother to vote? Nowadays the fans of the contest seem to be very passionate about songs and singers and i can imagine them jumping to the phones like possessed because for them A or B MUST be the winner,. I cant imagine this attitude in someone who just listens to the songs for the first time on Final night

I think I have a question. We talk about the love of an ethnic song. We talk about Albania, Armenia and all the Eastern countries. And off course the Southern ones. But is there a way we as Western=Europe could send in an ethnic song.? What is an ethnic song? Is it just the language? Being from the Netherlands choose between Sieneke and S10? Why there is no real ethnic song? Same for Belgium, UK, Sweden, Denmark and Germany.. How we could improve this without being throwing out of the final?

@@msch7620 But do Albanian people see their music as ethnic? I think for them it is also folk music. If the Netherlands would send a song in Frisian (official language) would it be ethnic? It is more about the definition of the word. La Zarra was sooo French but somehow it doesn't qualify as ethnic. Was KEiiNO ethnic? It is not a big issue but just a thought. But as we say "we like a good ethnic song" (and I do) what do we mean? Not just a pop song? I voted for Spain this year but I wouldn't call it ethnic. It is a part of Spain I know so I'm familiar with it. Same goes for tango, salsa, fado, schlager and le chanson. Is it the language or the music or the combination of both? I think the last. But it's probably my Post ESC Depression (PED should be recognized). I really loved this year.

@@Wamubodo Fulenn in 2021 was indeed ethnic. It’s the type of songs that is popular in parties in Brittany and is specific to the region. In France, each region has an identity. Corsican music sound nothing like the music in Brittany. I don’t consider LaZarra ethnic. It was quite stereotypical and meant to appeal foreigners. Accordeon would be more ethnic Northern France/Paris. It’s not just the language, it’s the instruments used.

Just want to keep this short on jury final - I was in the crowd at it and a number of people are making the comment about Noa and costume malfunction - Honestly - it was completely un-noticeable - I didn't see it, it didn't matter, it had no impact. Noa performed excellently even if she wasn't in my personal top performers. Spain - As soon as I came out of the jury show (I had gone in telling my friends - just wait for Spain, it is incredible - none of them enjoyed it. It was in nobody's memorable performances). The main issue in the crowd for Spain was that Blanca Paloma was invisible. You couldn't see her - she was behind the curtain for so long and when she finally came out it didn't have any special feel. So as soon as I got out I dropped it from competing with Loreen for top jury right down to around 8th or 9th (which is where it finished in the jury - I do agree it was robbed in the televote). In the arena on jury night, the biggest reactions were for Finland, France and Belgium. Loreen didn't get such a big reaction, because her performance was made for TV, not a live stage. She was way at the back, she didn't grab the crowd, but obviously on the screens it came across incredibly and I do think she's a very deserving winner overall. I personally just didn't connect with her - I was at the Amsterdam pre-party and all the artists were coming out to get on a bus to go back to the hotel, coming over to talk to about 40 of us who were hanging around and taking photos and joking around - particularly Kaarija - and then Loreen comes out surrounded by 6 security guys and whisked into her own private vehicle. That for me was a switching moment on my feelings on her (although I actually think that was probably her management doing that, but as I don't know how these things work it was just super weird and put a downer on all the rest coming out to joke around and have fun). The song, however, the performance, her professionalism on stage, I don't think anyone can objectively say she didn't deserve the win. France's result still shocks me having been at the jury show. I didn't hear bad singing, but in the crowd it's always hard to tell, the reception was incredible. Everyone loved her, loved the performance, and that jury score was probably, post-jury show, the biggest surprise for me of the night. I wasn't at all shocked Belgium scored so highly jury-wise with the reception, professionalism, the campness and feel-good nature of the song.

IMHO 49/51 is a fair system. Juries just need more diversity in age, experience, and genre specialties and aren’t just record label or radio people. Also an increase in jurors. 5? 🤮Give me a break. If Romania can spend 60,000+ euros on a lackluster staging they can afford to pay more jurors.

True, instead of minimizing jury power or outright abolish them, we should reform and elevate them and change the structure of jurors, like age, maybe send in people, who have written out of the box entries, maybe even performed them on the Eurovision stage. And maybe also people who are open to music outside of rock and pop.

Alesia prefers new out of the box songs. She also really wants to stick with that Petra Mede thing. You know what you get. Now I understand how people think and vote. Shouldn't come as a surprise. Don't underestimate the recognizable. The out of the box gives you attention and the recognizable pinpoints your preferences. Some lean to like more the staging, dressing and charisma. Others like the song itself and the vocals more. Or you value the lyrics and the message the most. An out of the box song doesn't give you momentum unless there also is a recognizable trait making it relevant to the most of the people. Make your conclusions yourself.

I'll keep posting this suggestion, I hope SOMEONE who can make a difference can bring it up... Please both Jury and Televote should give points to EVERY COUNTRY (Rank with 0 points to 25 points). That way, if you end up #11 in 26 countries you don't get 0 points and get below someone who got #25 place in 25 countries but #10 in ONE country (getting 1 point currently). There are some good entries that probably just fell off the cliff because they weren't ranked quite high enough to get points and then suddenly they get ranked equally to bad entries?? Blanka would have done better I think, probably Germany too. On the Jury side, I think Finland and Norway would have done way better.
@sandrogattorno4962
@sandrogattorno4962 Жыл бұрын
I agree that needed a new matematic formula that involves every entry. Maybe nothing change in the hight ranked but i feel that can be more faire for the middle and low positions.But I also think that more clarity is needed on what is voted and why, above all on the part of the juries, a vote by category and a final aggregate, type; Lyrics, arrangement, execution, originality etc. It would also be useful to give specific directives on the composition of the jury, 5 discographers (perhaps in their 60s) give a different opinion compared to 5 artists currently in their careers, music critics have different opinions and interests compared to retired musicians or singers and so on.

I’m not sure what you consider different. To me, Kalush Orchestra was different. Folk music infused with rap isn’t something you hear every day, let alone at Eurovision. Kalush paved the way for all the countries to send songs that had rap verses in them or were rap-based like Finland. I think Italy before that was also different. Yes, it was rock, but it was Italian rock and different from Lordi( or even different from any of the rock acts this year). Toy in 2018 was also different, because even though the chorus was your stereotypical female-empowerment type of verse, all those chicken noises and the way it was performed and sung, was different. 1944 by Jamala was different. It wasn’t folk nor was it pop. It had many different elements telling a personal story. In regards to fashion, it is subjective, so it’s fine for us to disagree, but I guess our tastes are very different, because I disagreed on nearly everything you said. I loved Alika’s outfit. I could have done without the tassels on the arms, but the color went with her staging, and I loved that it wasn’t a gown or a unitard that we have seen on Eurovision thousands of times. It was giving me Jamala vibes. Her earrings were stunning, and I loved the white shoes. Her outfit and Albina’s among the women were the only ones that were memorable to me. Blanca Paloma’s outfit was one of the worst. Those white pants did not belong on that stage, and I think her aesthetics is just one of the reasons she scored so low in the televote. She was singing a super traditional song, and she wore a clubbing top and trousers. Her dancers’ outfits were better than hers. Israel, I don’t really think there’s anything creative in a bra and underwear. Those baggy pants made me cringe. Reminded me of MC Hammer pants that needed to stay in that era. She did look nice though. La Zarra, yes, she looked good too, but there was nothing special about the gown. I hated Loreen’s outfit. The material looked cheap, and her hair looked straight out of Avatar, and those nails made me want to throw up. I loved Alessandra’s outfit. Yea, another unitard, but the suede green with gold accents, looking like a metal plate, and the crown on her head really made her look like “Queen of the Kings.” On the men’s side, I can agree with you that Tvorchi were the best dressed, both on-stage and on the turquoise carpet, and I also liked Croatia, coz even though their costumes were campy, they told a story. Their Croatian and Ukrainian-colored robes on the turquoise carpet were fab, and the faces of the kids representing children who have been harmed in Ukraine, made me sad and warmed my heart at their thoughtful and beautiful selves. Worst-dressed for me was Belgium, Romania and Greece. I would’ve liked Belgium had he not worn shorts. The whole jacket and shirt with shorts look is just terrible. Fine for 8 year olds, not for grown men or teenagers for that matter. Finally, it’s fine to not like Lithuania/Monika’s outfit, but why bring up her body? It’s ok for Kaarija to run around shirtless with his flabby stomach, and people celebrated him, but Monika cannot wear a short dress, because of her “thigh meat?” She isn’t even thick. She’s just not skinny, and that’s ok. Why not just criticize the dress without bringing up her body as a talking point?

Regarding 2023 songs I said that multiple times, this wasn't strong year, but it could have been. So many countries picked wrong this year and then we ended up having average year. Now, I don't think winner contenders were bad, I think we can say that we had couple of strong winner-worthy songs, but speaking for other songs that were never going to win I think we could have better contest. Regarding BBC production and hosting I would say it was just okay to me. The sound was obviously the biggest issue this year, but at least the stage worked as planned. I didn't like opening ceremony, I think last year's turqoise carpet was far more glamurous and interesting. The hosts were great, no complaint, but I think I liked Laura and Alessandro last year a bit more. The postcards seemed to be exciting and interesting, but to me personally they were rather underwhelming and boring, still decent compared to last year. Overall the show was solid and I think BBC did it fine, but I must say tho I think the show would be bigger and the venue would be bigger if this was hosted because UK won instead of hosting on behalf of Ukraine. If UK won last year the contest would probably be hosted in Manchester.

Let's be real about the Spanish song, and I know it will hurt: People outside the Spanish cultur could not connect to that song. Even a lot of the Spanish people themselve had their difficulties with that song, read the Spanish comments after Benidorm. I mean, I as German, also would not very excited when they would send a German "Volksmusik" song to the ESC. I like the Spanish culture, I ve been a lot in Spain and my mediocre Spanish permits me to talk to the people. Once I was asked what I thought about Blanca, I said the same as here. And the answer was more or less: Don't beat around the bush, it is a ulgy song. Again, it is not an ugly song. Musicwise it is very well done. But people outside that flamenco bubble can not connect with that song. pure ethnic songs will always have a hard time at the ESC. I know there are always exceptions. But on the other hand to choose a song like that from Sweden and put it that high also not serving to achieve more risky or creative stuff. I have already forgotten how the Song "Tattoo" goes. That kind of sings we heard thousand of times, especially at the ESC. But I remember clearly "Eaea" and "Cha cha cha".
