I hate the fact that the Eurovision discourse has turned so hateful and unproductive and I am glad you bring it up. This vitriol hurts the artists, hurts delegations, hurts the community. I understand that it is a world wide shift and is not solely based in our little corner of the Internet, but it does hurt me in here more than elsewhere especially when I see it happening between the core fans of ESC and not just internet passerby The contest is supposed to be about bringing the continent together and celebrating art and people, so there should be no place in it for people tearing each other down instead of building each other up. Thank you Alesia for all your hard work and coverage!

So glad you tapped on the Spanish fandome,,, indeed it has been tarnished by too many of the Spanish fans after Benidorm fest., I´m not a spaniard but I´ve been living in Barcelona for awhile so I´ve seen it first hand. Should point out that not all spanish Eurovision fans have mistreated her, however it has been sickening how some group of people, and few so called femenist and even some members of government where hating her just because other songs like Tanxugueiras and Rigoberta didn´t win, which btw neither of them would´ve done aswell as Chanel., Yet after she´s come back with a great 3rd. placement most of that hate has disappeared, truly astonishing that at first some wanted to burn our girl Chanel and now everyone wants to get onboard. Sadly some public figures are still spreading crazy ideas that her song enduces to prostitution, sickening but some actually believed that. In any case I as a femenist woman will always defend Chanel and any woman who wants to speak, dance and sing her truth in any corner of the world. Yes to freedom of speech, no to hate and fake news.

I really appreciated what you said about fans not having any sort of access to the rehearsal footage. Since February, when i first saw the Sekret FIK performance, i immediately became a fan of Ronela and after talking to some of her fans, and seeing their reactions at her stage outfit....uuf! It's hard to believe that her own "fans" can be so harsh to her. And insult her in every way imaginable just because she wore pink...She was insulted because of a stupid color. And you would think those are children and their young brains don't process what's comin out of their mouths but they are in fact adults. So i absolutely agree with you, we really don't know how to behave online. So no rehearsal footage, especially if the situation is similar to Ronela's, where she agreed for a different video to be posted and ESC posted the wrong one. How does that even happen? I didn't really enjoy this year, i actually thought it was a bit forced and all those ballads in the final? Snoozefest (in my opinion)

Ms. Alesia did not fumble the bag with that prediction. Also, it sucks that everyone decided that Ukraine should be their punching bag post Eurovison. Those guys are awesome and deserving of the win.

As a Spaniard, I totally agree. The behaviour of many of us after Benidorm was unacceptable: calling Chanel bad names, she had to delete her social media... Bringing politics into the results was the worse thing to do, that is the most divisive topic in Spain, and parties are like a cancer extending its toxic tentacles willing to dive into culture just to pick some votes, no matter what they destroy in their path. Sadly, many people follow them as a religion and that's why they think their opinions are right and no one has the right to challenge them. And now, the same parties that brought the election to the Parliament are congratulating Chanel. Hypocrites!!!!! I still remember in some Twitter spaces people saying Chanel was not singing at all, her voice was garbage, she was selling prostitution and all kind of shit just to try to justify their favourites didn't win. I just felt so down in those moments, Chanel brought a closed pack to the stage and deserved the victory and she was being dumped just for doing a good job. It's totally insane that people over 20 or even 40 were behaving that way and some of them still are, they need to move on and grow up, stop being so childish. And after the grand final, many of that spanish people (basically the most politicized ones) were saying the members of the Ukrainian delegation were nazi, even the polish spokesperson. They were using false pictures to try to demonstrate that, I don't know why, maybe just to lick Putin ass, as they have been doing since the beginning of the invasion. I am so ashamed of being an Spanish fan and find me in the middle of this nonsense, please, just remember we all are not the same fanatics and we can talk, have our opinions and respect others, a basic in human behaviour in society. Finally, I just wanna say I'm so happy for Chanel and her result. I literally cry watching her getting her 12 points from other countries, and hope she never has to say again "it doesn't matter if I don't feel the support during this journey" just for people being so rude and childish after Benidorm. That broke my heart in so many pieces and I will never forget it.

I believe that this year we just saw the completely different way of doing television in different countries. In Italy there is no talk of a horrible or ugly contest. We talk about success. Why this? Because such a big event had never been done in Italy. Our television, our direction, is accustomed to a different, slower, less tight work. Eurovision is a scientific method, which must not be flawed, calculated to the smallest detail. The Italian director of Eurovision in a commentary on TV said that it was the most difficult job of their life because it is an "English" way of making television that is diametrically opposed to the Italian method. None of them had ever worked that way. In Italy there are not many indoor musical events, in fact apart from Sanremo, which is a very small theater, the largest indoor event is the X-Factor final (but it is managed by SKY and not by RAI). RAI is specialized, so to speak, in large open-air concerts in arenas, amphitheaters, squares and football stadiums. As for the stage, it was very nice to my taste. Ok the sun didn't move but in the end the delegations who knew how to use the lights did a wonderful job and the stage was magnificent. Even from that point of view, a less technological television was found. In the sense that in Italy every television program that makes music, even the little Friday afternoon talk, always has a piano, a band, an orchestra. This is to say how Italian TV has increasingly focused on live music rather than on what is the stage or cutting-edge special and super-technological effects. This is to show how what may seem like a step back in one country can be seen as an experiment, a step forward in another country. For example, as an Italian, it was not strange to me to see the cameramen framed in passing, this is because it is a very normal thing on our television. You know that they are there. However, I understand how the Eurovision method is more towards almost "music video" effect. Often in Italian television cameramen are called by their names, applauded, presented, framed on purpose. Even the technicians who assemble the instruments or the sets for the next show are also framed. It's just a different world. For the conductors I think it goes to taste. For example, I like more a little more patchy way, it reminds me that they are human like us, it makes me smile. For me last year they were almost robots (always personal taste, no offense). Alessandro for me was the best. Laura and Mika defended themselves. I think their choice was also for their big names and the audience they could have added, Mika North America and Laura all Latin America where she is considered a goddess of music. I honestly have never seen the importance of postcards. In the end you have the commentator who introduces the singer and between seeing Emma in 2014 making the Italian flag with food and seeing a beautiful landscape or a beautiful city I prefer the latter. Here, however, I am biased as an architect. As a music lover I would like to see more interval acts like this year. Many have accused that it was all about Italy but I wish it were always like that. I want to discover the music of the host country or remember their beautiful songs. Another utopian desire of mine is that one day live music will return to Eurovision. Sometimes without the musical instruments it all seems very fake. My hope after this Eurovision is that we have rediscovered how the singers, music and lyrics should be at the center. The stage and the show must be there but they should never overwhelm what the music is. In fact, I loved the Estonian effort, the stage was empty but he filled it up and made it his own by making it live. Lastly, I must say that this year Eurovision made me feel more sick than well. I had never in my life read so much hate on social networks against my country, against workers who did their best, offenses on the social profiles of the stage designer. Stereotypes, clichés, teasing that began months earlier because it would have been a total disgust. Honestly, for a moment I hoped that RAI would withdraw from Eurovision again as in '98. An absurd toxicity. I also sincerely hope that my nation won't win Eurovision anymore because it was really a tough time. All this novel just to express my opinion with you who have been accompanying us for years with beautiful and professional contents. My message has no intent of controversy it is just my vision as an Italian. There are most likely a lot of grammar errors. I apologize but I haven't trained in writing for years. I wish you all the best, and good luck with your work and family. I can't wait to start the journey towards the 2023 edition with your videos. An affectionate CIAO from Italy

I remember when Italians started a cruel campaign against Chanel on the social networks even insulting her with sexist comments. During the broadcasting for Italy, the commentator (from RAl) was telling CHANEL is a Jlo on discount and in every track to show the numbers to vote did the same every time. It has been horrible but you Italians helped a lot to make this journey so sad.

The only thing I disagree with you is about the jury. As much as i hate it when they vote for political reasons and mess things up, we can't deny that generally their voting is based on the quality of the song, the accuracy of the vocals, the staging etc and not on the show so much. People will vote a good song yeah, but also will go excited and vote every stupid song that seems weird. So we need the balance For example, a wonderful song like Greece's didn't get the public votes it deserved but fortunately the jury appreciated this song and helped it make it into top 10

Strange as it might sound, you should consider making a post that's specifically about how to give feedback and criticism. It's your channel, your standards. I really don't think commentors intend to come off as rude or hurtful as they often do, for the most part. Still, we all want to get our individual points across and not be misunderstood. Expressing disagreement is vital to open, honest communication, but there are always better ways to go about it. Perhaps a think piece to establish expectations and offer ideas can lead to even greater discussions.

In terms of Ireland, I was skeptical going in, but when a number of performances weren't bringing their A game in the semi-finals, Brooke brought a strong vocal performance, certainly the strongest I had seen from her, and she deserved to qualify. Also, I think in years a Big 5 country hosts, whoever has the highest 11th place score in the semi-finals should fill out the 26 entries, because I really wanted North Macedonia to qualify.

I would be cool with no rehearsal access. I started watching in the 1990s when there was no rehearsal footage and fan bloggers weren't really a thing. As a viewer, I personally like to come at this as unsullied as possible and be surprised by what people choose to put on the stage and if it's good, it's a really positive experience, so I go out of my way to avoid rehearsal footage and even stills. I am judging it as both a song and a complete presentation, so I like the idea of being as unbiased as possible coming into Semi 1 and judge based on what I see in those three minutes. I rarely actively dislike any songs on offer, so I find it preferable to let my gut instinct and my heart decide with a finished product whether I am going to support a song with my vote or not or even just say "yeah, that was better than I thought it would be" or "phew, they didn't wreck it" or "oh that wasn't very good" (kind of a default feeling if you are British). It makes watching entries like those from Moldova more fun, to be honest, you are getting the craziness the way the group intends, unfiltered and pure. People talking up a fan favourite just because of a professional performance rather than anything spectacular or surprising just because, especially if the staging has changed very little indeed just makes the Contest look more like a popularity contest and could potentially give some countries like Sweden an unfair advantage in the momentum stakes. It can be really hard to avoid footage and stills. I avoid a lot of social media in Eurovision-related threads because everyone wrongly assumes that you want to see everything and you cannot avoid it. There's quite a lot of entitlement in the fandom now, especially more recently with the deluge of content available. The meanness of some people is troubling to me, I don't think that's consistent with being a fan AT ALL. To me, the artists are there to give their best. It seems unfair and disrespectful for some unpleasant person on the internet to start anonymously mouthing off about X act's outfit, Y act's body movements or Z act's LED backdrop when they are trying to concentrate and prepare for the biggest night of their lives. I wonder often how that same random typer would feel, wherever they are, if Ronela for example, were to come and critique them on their performance of THEIR job, whether they would be so happy to dish it out. Rehearsals also probably have an unfair influence on people's perceptions in general and we don't know, they could be working with technical issues (such as the sun this year) or even health issues we don't know about at all or didn't realise was as serious making the whole process more stressful than it needs to be. I acknowledge I am probably in a tiny minority of the online fanbase. I'm happy to listen to the songs and engage with anyone who wants to talk about that, but watching the staging, the bit that makes it Eurovision, I leave that to competition night - it maintains the excitement and suspense FAR better that way and keeps me away from the nasty parts of the fanbase.

Perhaps the 3 hosts is a legacy of the times when broadcasting was done in 2 or 3 languages (English, French and host). I think there was always one who was mainly in charge of the French part. I don't know, I speak hypothetically but I think the stage problems must be easier to some countries. Big countries can redesign a stage in a week because they have a dedicated team, they probably had several stage designs already created, and if they need anything they probably already have it back home, so just load it into and plane, done. Smaller countries don't have those and of resources and they probably had a limited budget and already used all of it.

Ireland... it's hard to pinpoint what went wrong. Running order perhaps? Maybe it got drowned by all the ballads and vocal powerhouses? Visually it was great. She was vocally on point too. The only critique I can think of is it sounded a bit hollow and empty at times. I think she could've used some backing vocalists to give it a little something more. Something to attract the attention of the Juries.

I enjoyed the hosts, although Mika came across as very fabricated. I wouldn't mind seeing Alessandro as a side kick for Petra Mede. Wouldn't it be nice to bring a united contest after the united vote we had this year? I also wondered why they couldn't move the vinyl with so much time in between songs. thanks for covering. hopefully in two years the RTBF won't do singer - choreography - wide shots like they did 5 times in a row now and that only worked for Loic Nottet (who made the choreo himself and can dance). And the Flemish broadcaster had a dip in 2018 and will continue on the path of 2016 and 2021 next year. Grtz from Belgium

With all the drama this year it seems that 10 things I don't want to see at Eurovision 2023 will have to be 20 things! It is a pity because all in all it was nice but there was a lot of distraction and drama which is really unnecessary. A side question. I know the 12 points system is iconic. But it was created at a time when Eurovuson had only 15 participants approx. With our 26 participants in the finals and 18 in the semi, there are too many countries that get zero points when each country votes (16 in the final and 8 in the semi do not get any poi to whenevera country votes). If you make it in the top 10 of a country voting you just get one single point. The points are not reflecting the mix of quality and impact of the songs. Why can't we change that? That would avoid these unpleasant zero points moments which are really unnecessary and not reflecting the correct impact of the song.

I agree that the fans don't need to see any rehearsals, but I think the press needs to be in the press room. If fans are attacking the artists based on what some journalists are saying (Greeks, cough), then the EBU should have a mechanism that monitors THIS instead of blocking live streams cos you can see the screens for a second and a half. Let's keep in mind that the press helps delegations achieve their visions, and it is the exceptions that ruin it for the majority that are probably doing the job that they need to be doing.

Can we see you yell? Coz you come across sooo friendly! I think they wanted a native speaker and that’s why they went for Mika. At first I thought Mika was of Italian-descent… but whatever…🤷🏾‍♀️ No, you’re not picky. There’s always been a bit of a homemade vibe to Eurovision, that people have probably made a drinking game with it by now. You’re right about the green room interviews. Did you watch Eurovision 2010 in Norway? I think that was a fantastic show, probably the best in years, that I still measure other years/host countries on. About Eurovision being politics: it’s not quite that… it’s about the emotions in televoters. That’s my theory and I need a few years to test this though.😁 Do you know about the Overthinking it channel? They are also Americans doing Eurovision coverage…would be so cool for you to do a collab with them… or maybe a VR to their who would have won if it wasn’t Ukraine

Okay, for France i think they are a good song, but got messed up because they are not in anyone's top 10, like even at the grands when i see the performances, they end up 12-14 in my ranking, which when using eurovision points system, would get 0 anyways, if they went Seule it won't change it because jury went ballad, and televote went more upbeat and Seule is just in the middle, (maybe will finish near where Jezebel finished which doesn't change much)

I personally disagree about Spain this year. The song is in my top 10, but she got a good score because she was the only bop in the final since Cyprus and Albania were eliminated in the Semi, and with the abundance of ballads this year she simply stood out. If she competed last year, she would have gotten a lower score.

Thank you Alesia for the great videos this year! You did an amazing job! This year really wasn’t for me, because everything just felt very off. Starting with the long bad national selection season, a lot of slow songs, the broken stage, all the drama about disqualifications , the press accreditation drama, RAI being very lackluster, the camerawork (it was so bad), the ugly postcards and so on. It was such a dropdown compared to last year. Especially if you compare the grand finals. What a quality change. I dont want to look rude, but it just wasn’t it. I’m sorry

Respect your opinion but ultimately Eurovision by RA1 was successfully televised ,there was a winner, with no major mishaps, the hosts were not robotic as usual but spirited, encouraged some heartwarming audience sing along parcitipation through the night,in rehearsal s which is why we have them ,few camerawork issues occurred but no major concerns on the night when it importantly mattered . The stage looked great on the evening was not broken, was the sun backdrop which the EBU wanted and commissioned,Italy was against the sun and voiced their concern s and they had to work with the new rules of the press centre and no rehearsals footage..Don’t know when all this has become so serious, can never please everyone especially diverse Europe..Italy did good,👏🏼👍💕this is my opinion only as yours,thanks..

This year was the first year I followed all the circus way before the finals, usually I'm a final and done girl, but I decided to see what the bubble has to offer this year. Won't do it again, from extremely toxic fans and haters to over-analyzing every last drop of every second of every rehearsal it took away the fun. Also going into the final knowing what will be my favourite and which songs I didn't like didn't help either. My opinion was formed months ago and didn't change and took away so much fun. So next year I'll try to avoid everything going into the final and then watch the semis and all that afterwards. And of course, don't participate in any conversation or comment section, there are a lot of downright creepy, toxic and sick people out there.

So when we westerners say "just don't do it, why bother" it won't hit home with them, they'll just try to think of better ways to do it because it's culturally ingrained as how you operate in life.

Montenegro was a song that got away, also they put in Italian to mix things up and the end was better. Never liked the Irish song, the two note hook seemed cheap. The Israeli song was surely better than the Irish song, it switched things up more. I didn't think Sweden or Italy took any risk. Sweden just brought national final staging again. They get by on reputation. The best native language songs for me Netherlands and Iceland. Iceland grossly undervalued and S10 not making top 10. I thought Subwoolfer had the best overall contribution to Eurovision this year. In Italy they tend to think Sanremo is better and Italophiles no doubt reassure them of that. So the messy nature of that transferred to Eurovision. Part of what Eurovision has become is the noisy audience, and how for some it's a party and not even about the music anymore. Tired of these people in the arena audience. I care more about decent music than flag waving or obsessing over placings. It's been more a song festival than a song contest for me. The voting part is a bit of light entertainment.

Communication professional arguing that yelling is the way to go. Oh boy.. here comes the conservative era. Yelling to someone paralyzes them, they only "learn" to be afraid of a superior, but it increases the chances of mistakes (which are not done by ill intention/insubordination). And even in this case (where the problem is insubordination and not mistakes), yelling - and brute force don't make them understand why they should do something, but just to be afraid of the superior. And this creates the well known phenomenon of the dad feeling humiliated by the boss, taking it out on the mom, which takes it out on the kids, which takes it out on animals or whatever..

Ukraine won out of sympathy votes. That’s a fact. 439 points from Televoting to the weakest winner in recent years has only one explanation and people should not be afraid of calling things by their name: Sympathy votes. Let’s not lie to ourselves. Ukraine knows how to do Eurovision, sure…but this is not Ukraine’s finest. In a “normal” year, Ukraine didn’t stand a chance with Kalush.
