Chicago Theater, 1989, 7th row, left center. THIS was the apex: "Don't cut me down..." absolutely melted my knees out from under me...

I remember watching this live at the time; we all stopped what we were doing and watched, engrossed. People were talking about it at work the next day. In the eighties, before the advent of MTV Unplugged, it was very rare to see a band play acoustically, stripped back, like this. Nowadays you can’t move for people keeping it real with acoustic performances. This though, despite being something of a novelty, was a special thing.

To ask Annie Lennox to lipsinc would be a crime! Finally the producers realized this song needed a live rendition! Absolutely Brilliant!

Fantastic ! NOBODY could sing live better than Annie Lennox in her 30's and 40's. Singers today would die to be able to sing live like Annie.

A supreme performance by Annie Lennox. Wonderful. Also a masterclass in accompaniment by Dave Stewart. There's a huge difference between strumming along and bringing the music to life. He's both conductor and orchestra with an acoustic guitar.. Class.

The true Queen of the Brit Awards. This is how a decent contralto sings and how a songwriter writes decent songs alone or with just one other. Adele take note. This lady banged out amazing material every year. No writers block.

I saw (witnessed?) this as it was broadcast. I was a child. My first reaction was at 1:51 - why didn't the crowd erupt? My second was at 2:08 - what did Dave just do there? No internet, just a fading memory that something very amazing had occurred. Well I remembered it, and here I am now.

Sensational, brilliant performance. Absolutely love it. Why don't you do an acoustic tour, like at the Sage Gateshead. Simple Minds did it , was absolutely the best. So no reason why you could not do it. Do it before it's too late, believe me.

I wonder how they wangled this on Top of the Pops in the 80s, when they usually insisted on a band miming to the record. Did they say they wouldn't perform unless it was live? :)
@zoe-janesutherland43596 жыл бұрын
Probably, Eurythmics were huge at that point and TOTP needed Eurythmics more than Eurythmics needed TOTP. All bands/groups should sing live in all performances, none of this miming/lip synching shit we have all the time nowadays.

Me hubiera gustado escuchar a Annie Lennox en Roxette. Grandes temas pero en vivo no llegaban a este nivel vocal. Sin desacreditar a Marie, claro, qpd.

I'm not a big fan of either of them - a strange, insecure couple. But they've made an impression on my life: First whatever the Sweet Dreams video was about - it certainly stayed in my head. Secondly this performance, just when it looked like pop music was going down the toilet, and lastly when I waited on my own in a room as my partner was prepared for a C section delivery "there must be an angel" was on the radio" :) so they've provided the soundtrack for 1 or 2 moments, heh
