As a spaniard I can't help but shake my head when reading all these comments from fellow countrymen so full of contempt for the Euskera language. Meanwhile linguists all over the world, and even non linguists like you guys, show the appreciation it deserves as one of the few remnants of the pre-indo-european culture (and the only one left in the Iberian peninsula). It's most definitely a fascinating study object for any language lover out there, and I sure as hell would love to learn it some time in the future.

Castillian Spanish is heavily influenced by Basque language, the first written Spanish was found in Valpuesta, Burgos province of Spain, where is very adjacent to Basque region. Many Spanish words originated from Basque as well as Spanish surnames. It is supposed that the first Spanish speaking people were once Basque people who altered from Basque-speaking to vulgar Latin. In fact, a language's sound system is heavily influenced by earlier trait. I find Portuguese sounds different from Spanish, Portuguese is heavily nasal, vowel system close to French, maybe Portuguese was influenced by Gaelic language from Gaul like that of French (Portugal means "Port of Gaul").
@allaincumming63134 жыл бұрын
Interesting, that would explain why Portuguese and Spanish are notably different, still having Iberian vulgar Latin, Arabic and Visigothic as parents/loanword origins.
@michaellejeune77154 жыл бұрын
Perhaps, Portuguese is also closely related to neighbouring Galician which definitely has an old Celtic substrate. Gallic from Gaul - from what we can derive from inscriptions - was a lot closer to classical Latin though, so I think the different varieties of later vulgar Latin had more impact on the pronunciation in all those places than Gallic or Celtiberic. Still, anyone working on that time machine?

Gora euskara, lagunak!! Besarkada ta muxu bat! Ze polita, gure herria ta gure hizkuntza!

It has - among the speakers in the video - a very strong Spanish tonality. Do we know how much the pronunciation of the two languages is related through generations of bilingualism?
@_NoHayPruebasDeQue_3 жыл бұрын
It,s understandable sounds are similar. Current basque language has been standardized, joining pre-latin rests, only surviving in valleys and areas where romanization was scarce, while in the rest of Peninsula, pre-latin iberic variants dissapeard with Romans and replaced by Latin, becoming later Castilian (Spanish), born certainly around basque area. We could say that Castilian is latin spoken by Basques or Iberians, as French could be something like "Latin spoken by Germans...". So, It,s understandable sounds are similar. All reasonable studies lead to the fact that basque surviving language was one of the iberic family languages spoken in great part of Iberian Peninsula. For instance, just compare iberian old numbers (deduced from tombs and inscriptions) and current Basque IBERIAN (pre-latin): 1/2. Erder-i, 1. Ban, 2. Bi-n, 3. Irur, 4. Laur, 5. Borste-Bors, 6. Sei, 7. Sisbi, 8. Sorse, 10. Abar, ... BASQUE (current): 1/2. Erdi, 1. Bat, 2. Bi, 3. Hiru-r, 4. Lau-r, 5. Bost-Bortz, 6. Sei, 7. Zazpi, 8. Zortzi, 10. Hamar, ... ifc.dpz.es/recursos/publicaciones/29/54/32ferrer.pdf

There isn’t enough evidence to posit with confidence that Basque is related to any Iberian variant. A couple of important points to note: - The phonetic similarity between the number systems could very well be superficial. It’s even debated whether or not the two geographical regions of where Basque and the Eastern dialect of Iberian were spoken even coincided. Lexically speaking, Basque philologists like Lakarra have proposed intra-Basque etymologies for many words which appear similar, including those that you mentioned. - There are some morphological similarities, primarily stemming from certain suffixes like -ka and -te, but there are so few examples that it would be reckless to assume with certainty. - Finally, there isn’t even enough evidence to assure the ergativity of Iberian. Without this, given that Basque is ergative, it would be very difficult to relate the two. There are many other points that could be made. However, I think this is enough to show that we shouldn’t jump the gun on this. Philologists would need more inscriptions of both languages to make a more informed decision.
@_NoHayPruebasDeQue_2 жыл бұрын
@@Joe-cb6ex In that world where there were no language academies, no social networks, no telephone, no roads..., any isolated population group would develop small differences with groups from other valleys and contiguous geographical areas. But the few traces available always point to in the same direction, such as that the script used was the Iberian one or that the little that can be compared, such as, for example, the deciphered Iberian numeral system, coincides almost exactly with the current Euskera system, but infinite philosophical lucubrations and extravagant theories must be elaborated to look for unlikely relationships with languages from any other end of the world, rather than accepting the natural and obvious: that the explanation is, logically, at home. Let's stay in an eternal provisional state of denying all evidence and common sense, let's not rush into opposing the politicians who invented Basque nationalism around one century ago.
@Joe-cb6ex2 жыл бұрын
@@_NoHayPruebasDeQue_ I reiterate my earlier statement: there isn’t enough linguistic evidence to declare, with certainty, a genetic relationship between the two groups. It is obvious that there may have been influence, as the numerical system might indicate. I’ve also given the example of intra-Basque etymologies for words that are supposedly descended from Iberian. Even so, one must examine this at a far deeper level, specifically morphosyntactical. Without even being able to prove ergativity in Iberian, in my opinion, this is a moot point, as far as I’m concerned. If experts in the field have not arrived at a consensus, I think that’s enough to leave the question open. I would suggest reading papers from Rodríguez Ramos and Lakarra if you’d like more reason to be skeptical, as they’re far more knowledgeable on the subject than me.

@ildg 007 Having same vowles sounds isn't an impressive feat to clarify at least. Basque vowel sounds: i /i/ u /u/ Mid e /e/ o /o/ Open a /a/ Greek vowel sounds are complicated and obscure: Greek has a system of five vowels /i, e, a, o, u/: The closed vowels /i, u/ have qualities approaching their respective cardinal vowels. The mid vowels /e, o/ are true-mid [e̞, o̞]. The open vowel /a/ has been described variously as near-open central [ɐ] and open central [ä]. There is no phonemic length distinction, but vowels in stressed syllables are pronounced somewhat longer [iˑ, uˑ, eˑ, oˑ, aˑ] than in unstressed syllables. Furthermore, vowels in stressed syllables are more peripheral, but the difference is not large. In casual speech, unstressed /i/ and /u/ in the vicinity of voiceless consonants may become devoiced or even elided. Examples for vowel phonemes πας /pas/ 'you go' subj. πες /pes/ 'say' imper. πεις /pis/ 'you say' subj. πως /pos/ 'that' conj. που /pu/ 'where'

I know little about Breton or Irish, but you are right about Basque and Spanish. You are probably wrong about what you are implying or supposing. The Spanish language inherited the phonetic system from Basque. This explains some distinctive characteristics that Spanish does not share with the other romance languages. Spanish also has some basque words; the most used probably is "izquierda" (left), which comes from the basque "ezkerra." In fact, Spanish was born on the border of Basque-speaking and Latin-speaking people. The tune changes, but Spanish and Basque share most phonemes and the 5 vowel system. (the main reason that makes it sound like Spanish to you)

Phonology and melody of language sounds exactly like (Castilian) Spanish. But then I realize that I don't understand a single word that I should do, if it was Spanish. So apparently, Basque language has been influenced a lot, at least in phonology, from the surrounding Spanish.
@jrj974 жыл бұрын
Angel Scorpio this may be true, but interestingly some linguists hypothesise that Castilian may have been historically influenced by Basque rather than the other way around.

Not at all, accent is similar to Spaniard. Basque is unrelated to the other languages of Europe and is a language isolate relative to any other known living language
@leonardofonseca45982 жыл бұрын
This is the strangest language i've ever heard, because there is nothing similar to the other official languages of Spain, i speak Spanish and catalan, a non catalan speaker can understand catalan even if it is a little bit, but spanish speakers who live in other parts of the country don't understand euskera, sometimes it sounds like an african or asian language, but its origin is unknown.

Pardon my innocence here. I must add what a long-ago mentor told me, a PhD in Romance & Classical Languages (Yale Univ). He felt that there was some similarity of tone between Portuguese in Iberia and the Sicilian dialect of Italy. Hope I even said that right. I see some French in Portuguese (Jean, Joao, etc). And of course there is ancient Latin vulgate under the surface in all except Basque. Regarding the Portuguese/Sicilian parallels he saw, maybe that could go back over 2500 to the Phoenician/Carthaginian occupation of the Southern Mediterranean, at a guess. Carthage eastern Sicily for centuries before the Romans took it away 2nd Century BCE; Phoenicians, who founded Carthage, also founded Gades or Cadiz in Spain.

Actually, I think the percentage is higher than 60%. But technically its not that they dont know their own language, not at all. Lots of the modern basque population is descendant from inmigrants that came from other regions of spain, and of course they didnt learn the local language since it wasnt taught in school and you could live with castillian only. So you cant blame them, 120 years ago those families that today are basque were living in andalusia, castile, leon, extremadura... Its not that they lost their language, they never knew it in the first place.

I wish euskera differed more from spanish & English. I dislike it has so many words with the same or similar spelling in Spanish & english. I'd suggest replace those words with words from other languages. Make it harder for hispanophones & alglophones. All these are of similar or identical spelling in Basque, Spanish & English. I'd love if euskera used the word from other languages that didn't resemble SP or EN. Examples of how I'd like it: Music = Zene ink = muste Banana = muz museum = Safn Elephant = slon England = Sasana Zebra = ngựa vằn Soap = mýdlo Asthma = huangō Viking = Lochlannach Pyramid = Ahraamta Piano = 钢琴 Fossil = απολίθωμα Tarantula = lintuhämähäkki Gas = dujų Coconut = nyog Cinnamon = darçın Starch = wanga 🟥
