Kid mistakes: 1. He never build some trusted allies like Luffy's, Kaido's, Big Mom's or Shanks'.. not necessarily powerful ones, but trusted one 2. He never use Haki to 100%.. Only rely on his Devil Fruit and its Awakening.. Back in Wano, he was a bit shocked and casually asked Luffy how he was able to hurt Kaido 3. He underestimate Shanks and his crew. He got no intel for Shanks' crew, know nothing about his background and Shanks' past relationship with Roger 4. He dont understand a thing about Gold D Roger's treasure and legacy.. My opinion on that, is that Kidd wasn't planned to be a disgrace from the begining, and this is all blammed on popularity polls, reaction from the public, and the week by week serialization phenomenom. The supernovas were created as a last minute adition to Sabaody in order to make that arc more interesting, and Kidd was planned to be the narrative foil to Luffy. Finally, a rival who would serve as a deuteraroginist later down the line, and Oda even stated on SBS that this was his intention when he made that brash rookie pirate with a bigger bounty than Luffy. He planned Kidd to be Luffy's rival, almost like White beard was Roger's rival back in the previous generation. However, it was quickly noted by editors and Oda himself, that Trafalgar Law was the one that got more excitment from readers, and that's why Oda decided to have the character show up at the end of Marineford, and rewrote the character ( he intended Law to be a villain at first ) to appeal to the fans. So I don't blame Oda completely on that... Kidd as a narrative foil was a flawed idea in the first place, because Luffy isn't written in a way that makes sense for him to have a constant rival nagging him on to become a better version of himself. He doesn't need that in the narrative at all. Law serves another funtion, as someone who pulls plot points, serving similar purposes as Vivi in Alabasta ( that Dressrosas highly paralells post time-skip), but Kidd lost it's narrative importance the moment Luffy went through a time-skip that gave him a power-up, with no need to have a rival to goad him into it. Kidd doesn't belong in the narrative as much, and I do hope Oda finds another function for him. He did his best to convey that narrative during Luffy's training arc in Udon's prison, but after that, Kidd is not needed at all! Law is still slightly needed to bring some closure to the whole "will of D" and the ultimate ability of his devil fruit, but Kidd is narrativelly useless at this point. I blame Oda making Trafalgar Law just so damn sexy in Sabaody lmao. If the japanese public loved Kidd more than Law when they were first introduced, we would be seeing another character entirely for Kidd. Serialization has it's perks, and Oda said so. He was surprised himself, cuz he didn't expect Law to be popular compared to Kidd. ANyways. I hope Kidd do have more to show for himself later on. Hope he has a training arc during Elbaf. I'd hate the character to just be throw in the trash bin before peaking.

He answered "Trafalgar Law" and points out the popularity polls. He said that when he first planned the Supernovas, he just wanted them to be random rivals who wouldnt last long in the plot/new world. He just made them as a last minute effort to make Sabaody more interesting, but he detailed Kidd the most, thinking the fans would love him and expect him to show up big in the next few arcs. However, Oda was taken aback by the popularity polls, showing Trafalgar Law to be favored among the new additions. He said he was surprised, but that was the whims of the week-to-week serialization. He probably didn't first plan Carrot to have a big role. DIfferent from Law, who he didn't plan anything beforehand, and decided he should expand on the character post timeskip for plot reasons. Carrot isnt even the first mink to show up when they got to Zou. She wasnt written as a plot hook, nor a plot builder. She was always meant to be a side character to play off Chopper ( like Pedro who was written as a Sanji substitute ). In my opinion, Kidd wasnt first planned to be trash. People just didnt vibe with him as much as Oda expected, so he was pushed to the sidelines. He had a lot of potential to be a rival who paralels Luffy in his own journey, but the plot didnt develop that way after the time skip, so... Kidd became superfluous.

I'm just taking Oda's answers from a 2017 SBS and giving it my interpretation of why he pushed Kidd to the side lines, taking into account what I know from character writting/archetypes/plot hooks. Kidd had potential when he showed up, thanks to the efforts Oda put in his design, personality, powers, paralels to Luffy and plot introduction. Oda clarifies in the SBS that he was caught by surprise in the serialization phenomenom, cuz he was chocked by Law's accidental popularity in the polls published at that time. It's no wonder Kidd wasn't as much focused after time skip. People didn't vibe with him ( I do have a theory that Oda drew himself into a corner with this character, cuz he made his design too detailed and complex. When Kidd shows up after time-skip, his design is less detailed ( especially his coat) and my theory is that Oda just didnt want to draw that complex design as much, so he left Kidd behind lmao... but thats just my speculation based on his character design changes ) I also dont think he is dead cuz Oda isn't the type of writer to kill off characters in such way. But yeah, I don't blame people for thinking he's dead and gone. He's not as important to the plot, so could as well get rid of him lmao. If Oda was more "trigger happy" with character deaths, I'd say Kidd was a goner.

Kidd and Luffy are very similar in how they belive they'll be the king of the pirates and they get themselves in trouble because of that belief. But unlike Luffy we never see Kidd put in the work to get stronger. So Kidd is this character with a massive ego, but has nothing to back it up. I think Kidd losing to Shanks the way he did was the perfect end to his pirate career because it was completley avoidable. He could've trained more, learn from his first encounter with the Red Haired Pirates or decide to not instagate. But he did none of those things and got bodied because of that.

I dont think anyone thought different. The issue is that the greater the villain, the greater the hero looks when putting them down. And if Kidd is meant to be a villain role to be put down, he should have been more impressive first. Slamming a lot of metal into people at high speed (the railgun just being a ranged version) and doing nothing else is really disappointing. Assign was the first cool variant power he showed, and all he did was slam more metal into Big Mom. No Iron Sand like in Naruto; no Blood Bending to have his own Gear 2nd or patch up his wounds; no Magnet Room filled with iron filings connected to Observation Haki to make him a Dodge Master; no Iron Clones like Doffy' String Clones to confuse enemies. Plenty more ideas others would have. Just not stylish enough to make his defeat really fulfilling.

I love everything about this takedown. It's ALL facts. The comparison to Franky is so apt, because his ultimate attack is a beam that can't actually penetrate an Emperor. Franky's beam was the finishing blow against Sasaki in his triceratops form, so they are definitely comparable in power. In terms of raw strength Kid is definitely one of the top in the verse, but it's been so clearly demonstrated that internal damage is the new meta when it comes to top tier combat. He would have been completely helpless against Big Mom by himself. We all know Law carried; all he needed was anyone who could sufficiently distract Big Mom so he could set up his attacks. Replace Kid with Jimbei and it's probably a more comfortable victory. Not only has he demonstrably been able to knowck big mom around, but Fishman Karate has internally damaging techniques. I hate how uncreative he is with he devil fruit. We get it, you're a brute strength character, but I think he could do a much better job of using his Devil Fruit to enhance his fighting style. He could use combinations of attraction and repulsion to significantly buff his speed, he could fly under the right conditions, he can move people around a lot more easily than he usually does etc. And he clearly hasn't thought of a consistent way to finish people off who can withstand physical blows. And lastly, the key difference between him and Luffy is that Luffy has never been defeated without learning from his L. Luffy lost to Kaido and recognised that he had to completely rethink his strategy. Kid got washed and went back doing the same attacks. No thoughts to develop his haki. He's a garbage fighter, man. You are what you collect, I guess.

Regarding the uncreativity, it reminds me of how most people perceive Magneto's powers as just manipulating metal, even though he's capable of so much more like generating EMPs. But regarding Kidd, if you remember when Shakky introduced the Supernovas at Saboady, she specifically mentioned the only reason Kidd had a higher bounty was because his actions harm civilians. Since entering the New World, he has shown nothing that qualifies him as a contender for the One Piece. So far, he's been beaten by Benn Beckmann, Kaido and now Shanks.

This video RESONATES with me. I participate in slandering kid a lot and people would never believe that he was my favourite supernova. Yes, I preffered him over law, I loved his introduction, his higher bounty, savagery, his look, he's got his zoro, all the hype he had as a rival was definitely played up and he did not deliver. Also, notice how it's said he has conquerors but he has NEVER demonstrated it. It was so bad that the anime had to create a scene just to have him do it during the oshiruko scene.. I feel you bro, I feel you. ALSO don't forget that oda revealed kids backstory....in an sbs..

Kidd's biggest mistake was thinking that Big Mom and Kaido weren't just playing with their food during their fight. He only managed to eek out a win, even with Law's help, because Big Mom didn't go all out from the start. She didn't feel she needed to. Shanks had no such intention. He saw the lives Kidd was about to take and went full force from the start.

Idk, maybe it's just me but I don't get these expectations for Kid. The guy barely had any screentime before Wano and the only main guy who got the hype to be Luffy's rival was always Blackbeard. The Blackbeard pirates mirrors Luffy's crew. But at the same time, they're both different.

I agree, but more than Kid, I was sad to see Killer get hit with the aftershock/explosion, Killer deserved better. I would've also liked to have seen how Kid's crew fights, since we got a taste of how Law's crew did during his fight, so it is unfortunate we lost such an interesting looking crew before seeing how they worked as a unit, in a non-begging scenario lol.

@@3DoublePoint Nah, I see him in a similar light to Zoro, I think he'd be a great captain strength-wise, however, I think he is a better fit as the right hand man. He commands respect and is the cool center for his wild captain which has allowed the crew to soar beyond what it would be with just Kid alone. Killer as captain wouldn't have taken as many risks as Kid imo, which may have increased the crew's longevity but perhaps would have stagnated at being an underworld boss or broker. Which seeing how they ended up, may have been the better path.

The problem is to have a compelling rival, you need to have them on Luffy’s level of power and shine, and Oda refused to put anyone even close to that level. He did a great job setting that up but not really fallowing through. That being said, I still have hope for him in the future. Killing off a character like that is extremely un-Oda like, even for an “evil” character like Kidd. Maybe the giants can teach Kidd to be an honorable fighter instead of a savage.

I thought Kidd was just a cautionary tale of how Luffy's story would have ended if he relied too much on his df because if something similar happened to Luffy I could see Zoro sprawled out beside him like Killer was with Kidd and Sanji offering the poneglyphs in a desperate attempt to save everyone. The part I hate the most with Kid in Wano is that his mediocrity also affect other character's writting. Like Big Mom got substantially nerfed just for kid to do some impact on her. I wish we got more character work from him. Like what got him to change his mind and team up with Luffy and Law after he was absolutely clear that he would never team up with anyone ever again? at what point did he just GIVE UP on his ambition to defeat Kaido and just accepted that it'll be Luffy, without any inner conflict without any resistance and coming to terms with the fact that it had to be Luffy 'cause he wasn't strong enough. Boy just went "okay cool, you get Kaido and I'll hold off (barely, and letting Law do 70% of the work) Big Mom". No juice, no excitement, no character fleshing out. Most importantly, how does this man have Conqueror' s Haki. What did he do, that would show me that he deserves to have this one in a million superpower that makes you fit to be the leader of men and deserving of the Pirate king title, or any kingly title. Now, if Oda actually SHOWED us his backstory, where we got to see him untie his crew to CONQUER an oppressive regime and set sail with his newly formed crew to be the freest man alive, king of pirates, worthy of the one piece and wielder of the most supreme brand of Haki. Instead I got absolutely nothing. Kidd is cool, but he's underwhelming for a character that was literally set up to become the Whitebeard to Luffy's Roger.

It may not count since it wasn't adapted into the manga or anime like Lougetown, but what you say you wanted sounds word-for-word like the second backstory that created the Kidd pirates. Now I'm hoping we get that as a flashback in Elbaph, since that would be a good time to include and detail his history.

tbh, the second half of Wano is lacking on so many department, but most importantly there's no character driven narrative besides Luffy and Kaido. sure, we got cool ass fight everywhere, and maybe this is just a wishful thinking, but giving Zoro backstory for a little bit and then explaining it on SBS, when he literally on the land of Samurai? and nothing on Kidd, a character literally got reintroduced in Wano? i work at creative industry as well so to put it blatantly its so apparent Oda loses creative juice by the end of Wano, and i'm not blaming him. blud literally taking so many project as an individual i too will go insane. Live action, Film Red, Merchandising agreement etc etc. but man it's so heart wrenching when you got a project and an ambition to reach a certain goal, but in the end it cannot flourished because of the circumstances. that's why Egghead has been so good so far, Oda really get his jive back.

@@Seeryne i don't think Oda can do much damage repair for Kidd at this point, he lost his crews, his ships, all the leads to the One Piece. I think what Oda would do is having Kidd as a prisoner AGAIN in Elbaf and Luffy will save him by saying that Kidd is his friend or something along those lines, and Kidd will retire. I honestly don't know what more Kidd can add to the story, especially if he really is based on the unluckiest pirate.

The reason you hate him is actually the reason I like him. Because he fails. I think that makes him a great & super interesting character. Especially in the latest episode, where you literally see him struggle with his failure & choices. Never really saw much in Kidd tbh, but what I would want would be that the shanks fight... I mean slaughter could be a real reality check and Kidd actually starts realizing that he's not all that. But I think that we're too late in the story for Kidd to say, "I need to actually get stronger to survive and win now" so I think you're right that he's just trash and that he'll stay that way. I hope and pray he gets some kind of redemption but I really doubt it this far into the story.

Jay, I get it, But also.... Kidd WAS damaging Big Mom, heavily. She recognized that, out loud. We SEE that, multiple times. Regardless of what you believe, he was in fact harming her significantly, to the point where she was dodging, bleeding, screaming out in pain, and even getting a BROKEN ARM. Kid's devil fruit power, combined with his own abilities as an engineer to create all of these weapons, robots, and golems, is so powerful that he can harm someone like Big Mom or Kaidou, as we see, stated by Big Mom OUT LOUD, clear as day.
