Euthanasia and the Culture of Death

Friends, Pope St. John Paul II used the term “culture of death'' in his 1995 encyclical Evangelium Vitae to capture the secular world’s dark confluence of poisonous ideas and practices that lead-directly and indirectly-to spiritual and physical ruin.
Sadly, we’ve seen the the culture of death advance on many fronts. Today, we focus on the increasing legalization of assisted suicide in the United States and abroad. Listen as we discuss the issue and how Catholics can and should respond to it.

38 years ago, aged 32, I miscarried our 5th child. Naturally, I was very distressed and blamed myself until during prayer, the Lord, very powerfully, told that He is the author of life and death. Something I hold on to this very day. Thank you and dear Pope Francis for speaking truth, we need to hear more compassionate priests emulate you. I'm lucky to have one such in my own Parish Priest. In June, 1997, my father went to eternal rest. He had suffered horribly for 3 years with prostate cancer. Towards the end not even daily morphine could totally kill the pain. I saw this. Ten years later, my mother was dying of uterine melanoma. Four days before she passed I was visiting. She was signing Christmas cards, an act which she normally took great pleasure in. She was so ho-hum as she awaited taking her last breath, which happened on what would have been my father's 79th birthday. I could easily see how simple it would've been to give each an OD of morphine and allow them to slip quietly into eternity. But, as Catholics, we all understood that the time of passing is God's decision, not ours. Perhaps God will even take some time off their time in Purgatory for the suffering they suffered on earth. A prayer for the dying that I say every morning ends with, "Heart of Jesus, once in agony, have mercy on the dying."

I watched my father waste away with ALS for 3 years. He had strong faith and urged me to go to church consistently near the end of his life. He never complained. My mother asked him, "Don't you ever wonder, why me? I'd be so angry!". His response was, "Why not me?". When I heard that, I cried. What a humble thing to say. He was a genuine man. I really miss him.

I buried my mother this week. She suffered from dementia for years. As her disease progressed, she always asked where my father was; and upon discovering his prayer card in her drawer, she was launched into despondency. I am trying the best I can to align with Church teachings, but such mental cruelty was repeatedly visited upon my own mother that, when the time comes for me, I will choose the help of others. And if that makes me a bad Catholic, so be it.

My father, whom I thought was the author of his directive but now think perhaps he was guided by Thomas Aquinas when he told me that even though something may not be illegal it would still be categorized is unethical and so therefore unacceptable to God.

This topic is extremely difficult. I know as a Catholic woman there shouldn’t be any gray area in its regard. My husband was admitted to the hospital in end stage heart failure. The drs gave him less than a year to live . They placed a mechanical heart into his heart . All went well and he stayed in hospital for three months . We enjoyed the incredible three month recovery with such amazement and gratitude. At that three month mark while at our son’s house for Easter he had a stroke and continued to have four more in the following week . Nothing to be done as his heart kept throwing clots to his brain . After six weeks of suctioning secretions, a feeding tube and not knowing literally what was up or down I ran to Christ and asked him to help me send my husband’s suffering to hell and may I please send him to heaven . This move on my part was the ultimate act of love . Do you think I wanted my amazing husband to leave us ? Good God no ! I was devastated by his suffering. We stopped the heart pump and my darling went to heaven eight hours later. I spoke with my priest after this agony. He said, “ Anne, Michael died a natural death “. I wanted to share , needed to share . Thank you for the discussion.

Of course he died a natural death. Prolonging biological function by mechanical and chemical means - when one would have died without them and there's no hope of recovery - THAT is unnatural. Your dear Husband had reached his time. You simply allowed him to go to God when he was called. ❤

The slippery slope argument is actually happening in Canada. Here, medical personnel are now *offering* “MAID” to people who haven’t even asked for it. I know someone who was in an intensive care unit with her dying husband who heard a man complaining about the pain being OFFERED euthanasia. He didn’t want it and never asked for it. Another famous example is Christine Gauthier who had served in the army and lost use of both her legs. She later became a Paralympian. She asked for disability ramp and after 5 years of waiting, when she complained, Veterans Affairs also offered her MAID…

That is the same approach doctors and nurses take when a woman is pregnant. First thing I was asked when I was given the results of a positive test for my first child was, "do you want to have it"? I hadn't even thought of or considered that. They put the idea in your mind right then and there and if you are vulnerable and scared then, you can imagine what some may choose in that moment.

A man in my parish was suffering from terminal cancer (I am Canadian, from the province of Quebec), he was approached 5 times, 5 times from the medical folks asking if was open to assisted suicide. It's probably too late for us. Stop it this you can.

For the listener’s question, one of the most difficult things carry on that we are taught is to pray for our enemies. Personally. I have had a most difficult time praying for those who attacked Israel on 7 OCT and still hold hostages-including Americans-to this day. But each night. I pray the Lord open their hearts to Him, or at least convince them to surrender and release the hostages. And I truly mean it. If all else fails, I would rather Israel defeat them, but I don’t want anyone else to die. And so, if we can pray for our enemies, surely we ca. pray for anyone, living or dead.

From a legal viewpoint, once euthanasia is no longer anathema, then the case law around " equality " can and will be applied to it. If we try to place limits on it, they won't stand, because granting it to A and B but not to C , whose circumstances are really close to those of B......will appear unreasonably uncompassionate, because that little tiny item of difference, becomes your basis for denial of " the compassionate option ". No one has succeeded in limiting the extent of euthanasia, where it has been legally enacted.

Great caution is required as corporate Medicine expands "Palliative Care". In many cases, economic considerations drive palliative care decisions. "Quality of life " discussions that limit care saves hospitals lots of money. There is alot of good that comes from hospice care but great supervision of the process by people who dont have conflicts of interest is needed FB

Euthanasia has bothered me for a long time. I am a student of history about eugenics and the T4 program in nazi Germany. Just recently in Canada and the Netherlands have lowered the reasons to kill yourself with governments help. Added was autism, depression and boredom. I don’t think there’s a simple answer here. The goal should be to protect and respect life, but ultimately, it’s easy to tell someone else who is in agony to continue to live. I’d like to think I would want my loved one to life, but not against their will and not if it means keeping them in pain for who knows how long.

18 years ago my precious son was caught in a bomb blast in Iraq. He lost an arm, both of his eyes, and suffered severe injuries over his whole body. After he woke up and grasped his situation, he asked for euthanasia. Thank GOD! it was illegal where he was. With God's grace and his loving family, over the years he has regained joy, has married the love of his life. He has real hope of sight again due to the work being down by Neuralink. Euthanasia is evil. Had it been available, we would have lost him and be living grim lives now. We must stop this terrible evil.

Peace be with you, I whole heartedly agree with you Bishop Barron. There is a particular type of sacredness that can settle upon the home of the faithful. I was only 15 when she physically passed on. I held her hand as she took her last breath. Because the cemetry was on bus route home, I would get off at urupa/cemetry...As the mound of dirt settled back into the earth, overtime; so did my grief. I grieved with my nana, for my nana. My nana, one of the wise virgins. Ive helped with my great aunty and her battle with cancer. My aunty was a faithful woman to Jesus Christ, her faith worked miracles in the lives of the ones she was leaving behind. It is a privilege and a gift, to live out a natural death. Not only for ourselves, but also all of those we love. An abstract example would be Pope Francis washing the feet of those 12 woman in prison. The intimacy, humility and love within that sacred ordinance of washing feet...because of the experience that each woman had...their journey into love and acceptance beyond the veil will be easier to embrace because of soul recognition. By faith and through faith the veil thins as ones spirit becomes lighter and ones physical matter becomes more dense...lessons of the spirit may take place, "For God hath not given us the Spirit of fear; but of power, love and a sound mind." Doctors in the UK many years ago, used to say “Thou shalt not kill, but do not strive OFFICIOUSLY to keep alive”. Nowadays both extremes can frequently be seen. I am 90. When my mother was 80, with Parkinsons disease and paralysed on one side from a stroke, she said to the doctor, “I do not want to end up a plumber’s job” meaning she did not want intubation etc. but just to be cared for in the end. I feel the same. In other words, let nature take its course, when all treatments really only prolong the agony without curing. I am OCDS, and I agree. I am of course against deliberate euthanasia. +

I agree. I'm in the UK too. This issue is very nuanced and there are so many different situations that it is almost impossible to cover them all with legislation. I personally believe that many cases in which suffering is too great to bear are related to the patient having been kept alive medically well beyond the point at which they would have naturally passed. I have seen recently with my 96 yr old mother and 98 yr old uncle, both of whom have been at death's door for months, that much of the 'treatment' they have received is clearly futile and has only extended the dying process, not their lives (neither is suffering).

The Church talks a great deal about saving babies, but definitely not enough about saving, helping, and protecting the life of vulnerable adults and even not vulnerable adults young, middle aged and elderly. This topic needs to continue to be talked about and acted on.

If euthanasia is wrong because killing is intrinsically wrong, then why is killing in defense of self, others, and the survival of the Church justifiable? The Thomistic argument goes, as I understand it, that killing in defense is okay because the taking of life is not the purpose, but the defense of others. Could the same logic not then be used for euthanasia, that the primary purpose is relief of suffering, not killing in itself?

Bishop Barron didn't say killing is intrinsically wrong. Watch the video again, and he specifically refers to the killing of innocents as intrinsically evil. None of your examples refer to the death of innocent parties.

I'm in Virginia, and recently, the leaders (100% Democrats or close to it) have attempted to pass a law making it easy for a doctor to "kill" a patient wanting it. A group of which I was a part was able to stop this from going into law, but we know it will be brought back next year, and we will need the people of Virginia to not let this happen.

I think you are right about the need for the Church to lead on this issue but the politics is what the Church and the Knights of Columbus both have shied away from and it took us 40 years to get Abortion turned in the court. The key to this issue, I think, is the attempt to make death a medical act. Until now, for physicians and the medical establishment in general, death has been off-limits. They have no legal capacity to decide the manner or timing of their patients’ death. This could change in the future, as a result of the new legislations. It is no coincidence that in the Latin-American countries where euthanasia has been legalized so far, after skillfully crafted marketing campaigns, governments tend to be very weak or nonexistent. To resist the possible future developments of this redefinition of medical intervention in a human life, I am afraid we will need lots of personal autonomy, however informed by a religious conscience.

Emotionally I struggle to understand euthanasia. As God created the life of each one of us in our mother's womb how can we take upon ourselves the right to extinguish that gift. Similarly with abortion. How can any woman with free conscience or under duress decide that the gift of life within her womb has no entitlement to life. Life prebirth and post birth is sacred in which the glory of God is expressed for all humanity to experience and enjoy.

@oOMaster_Splinter0o This is a horrible misunderstanding of how God works. This is what uneducated atheist professors say to justify their sin and ignorance. God created a natural world, which he allowed to develop and change on its own. Jesus literally compares God creating the universe to a farmer planting a seed, and waiting for it to form naturally. The seed in our universe is mathematical constants, from there all space, time, and matter comes from. God did not hand make my depression like he did not hand make the iPhone. The term "everyone bears their own cross" is so accurate, in a natural and material plain, we all have to grapple with things, thats how reality works. A perfect world without suffering does not build character or virtue, it builds laziness, narcissism and entitlement. Atheists who hate God usually also hate their lives or the universe for how it is, because they can't understand it, fortunately, God revealed the best way to live our lives, when Jesus preached the word of God.

This episode repeatedly suggests Christian ethicist Stanley Hauerwas is opposed to natural law. That's a straw man argument unless you can show where Hauerwas ever said that. I have read much of his writings and believe he would be in support of the natural law arguments made here. Hauerwas spoke against a certain kind of post-Enlightenment natural law theory that sought to be autonomous from scripture, the church and the gospel, and said some negative things about kind of natural law. If you cannot show that this venerable ethicist is guilty of the accusation you make we deserve an explanation. Thanks for your good work. I always enjoy this podcast.

I didn't understand what Bishop Barron was saying about morally wrong but not illegal and his example from St. Thomas Aquinas. Did he say that Aquinas advocated prostitution? I find that hard to believe.

Not advocate. He was just pointing out that the legal prohibition of something for which, though morally wrong, there is a demand and willing suppliers, will often result in other negative, possibly even worse, consequences.

22.28 What Aquinas says there should be any area of the city where it's fine to abuse women through prostitution and the Bishop is OK with that? I get that Aquinas lived in a different time and could perhaps be excused for not having a property understanding of this matter but a 21st Century Bishop should know better. Bishop, if you are going to use this as an example then perhaps cavitate it with an acknowledgement of the damage prostitution does to women that "people" don't use prostitutes men do. Aquinua was OK with damage to women to prevent other damage, primarily to men.

@@genghisthegreat2034 I would say that the intent in either act (withholding care or using medication) is to help the person pass. Although active euthanasia is to relieve suffering and help the terminal person pass.

@@benzle93 fair enough comment, but is it not more nuanced than that ? Withholding care is not an inactive intervention, if life would otherwise continue with such care? If the intention is to hasten death, by removal of the means by which life is sustained, that's an assumption of authority and agency which, to me, is unethical and morally wrong.

@@genghisthegreat2034 True. I was using the term "inactive" to differentiate the removal of life support from actively administering a medication that would end life. The moral argument around removing life support with the intent to allow the person to pass is complicated. I agree with Bishop Barron that we aren't necessarily to cling to this life at all costs.

@@benzle93 I agree with your last point, but I'd place the decision to discontinue within a necessary palliative care context. I might struggle one day to hold this position, but even in extremis, and terminally ill, there's an obligation on me, to keep a kind of solidarity with all others in that state. It's not a big leap, unfortunately, between extending " compassion " in euthanasia, to someone feeling, or being wordlessly made to feel " selfish " in not opting for it.

Today, I'm hurting. Euthanasia is the termination of life by a physician at the patient's request, the same as abortion. However, active euthanasia with physician-assisted suicide should be illegalized. Even, if passing (death) is in a patient's best interest request because the patient aims to end unbearable suffering with no prospect of improvement. I believe the mercy-killing decision with legal consideration is morally wrong. I am hoping this law will be changed. "You shall not murder."( Exodus 20:13 and Deuteronomy 5:17). It is forbidden (not permitted your cane, walker, and wheelchair ) to murder God's people. We paid for our roof installation, and we don't owe anything to you. In the King James Version of the Bible, "Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace." I thank God for never leaving us, He never forsakes us, He shows love to us, and forgives us. Bishop Barron and Mr. Matthew, I will continue to pray for this Euthania, and I will not be silent on this issue. God bless you all. St. Pope John Paul, pray for us. Our Lady of Lourdes, pray for us. When a person is in so much pain that he takes large doses of morphine, and the illness is so far advanced that the body is weak, the person is not taking his own life. He is. treating the pain . I do not consider this eurhanasia.

My husband was a hospice chaplain. There are many excellent pain meds available. There is no reason to murder someone because they are in pain. Modern medical science has developed very good pain relievers. I should know...I live with pain everyday. My life is still worth living. 😊

I think you shouldn't be able to impose laws based on your personal theological commitments on people who might not share them. The entire "you belong to God" argument only has any weight with me if I believe there is a God...which I don't. To have any rhetorical power, it might be better to come up with counter arguments that don't first require your interloquitor to share your particular religion; otherwise you're only likely to be persuading people who already agree with you.
