Pro Tips for EV Charging at Home

Good question I was thinking the same but couldn’t get an answer from Ford, Skoda or Lexus websites which all said they strongly recommend level 2, but not why. I put the question to ChatGPT and got a great response. The main reasons are level one puts a high drain on your household electrical system for a long period of time, which it was initially built for. That can cause issues if wiring’s old or faulty. Secondly level two wall chargers allow you to time your charging to take advantage off off peak rates. The wall charger cost can pay for itself in a year or so. ChatGPT also mentioned there is a slight impact on battery life. Based on the above I’ve decided to get a wall charger.

I just got an EV and I'm not sure why everyone considers Level 2 as a necessity. If you drive under 50 miles / day, Level 1 is more than enough.

Great point. I feel the same way. Level 1 is usually more than enough especially if you live in the city. It’s good to have the other levels as a back up plan. Appreciate the insight 👊

@StrongEnergy-EVCharging I just got a Kia EV6 5 days ago and haven't charged it yet. It went down from 75 to 45%. My Level 1 charger is being delivered today and I plan to keep it between 40 and 70%. So by my calculations, if I charge it overnight for 10-12 hours every 4-5 days, that should be all I need. I'll see how it works in practice with time :)
