OCE cars will start to depreciate even faster as we approach 2030. EV haters must also be ignorant of pollution and the environment. If you buy an EV and keep it 10+ years depreciation does not matter. And buying g a 12 month old Tesla for 18k is a barginwhich may not last.

I run a vehicle rustproofing business in NW England. I am rammed with bookings. WHY? Just about every customer tells me that they have no intention of buying an EV, or swopping their existing car for years to come. People are battening down the hatches and hanging on to what they already own. I am convinced that within ten years time, people will be openly talking about how the EV 'solution' was the biggest scam run in years.

My son owns a 2006 Jetta TDI with 300,000 miles on it here in the States. It still gets 45 mpg and drives great. Not worth much anymore, but it is 110% better than any milk float on the road. I drive a 2003 BMW Z4 I bought new and will drive it until the wheels fall off, then I will fix it and drive it some more. I have a 45 year old Ford E-150 I bought new, and it is a daily driver. My gas tank holds just as much gas as it did when I bought it. Can't do the same with an EV. No EV for me or any of that silly self driving garbage.

45mpg in a Jetta to drive 300000 miles has cost £42500 in fuel at current UK diesel prices of £1.40 litre. It will cost me £4200 charging my EV on my Octopus energy Intelligent Go tariff to drive 300000 miles saving me £38300 and more if you price up the oil changes and servicing costs.

apparently, a lot of people use PLP (?) financing for their vehicles, and EV's do NOT cost that much more per month compared to an ICE car. Ant extra cost is off set by running costs at 6p - 9p per mile compared to 15p - 18p per mile for dino juice.

It's no different to all the high end Audis, BMW's and Range Rovers you see on the roads in Britain. People can't afford to save for a mortgage deposit but are happy with a £500 a month car finance agreement. I saw a statistic saying over 90% of UK cars are on finance, which seems bonkers, but based on the average salary being around £33k and the number of nice cars you see I can actually believe it's not far off.

There’s even more petrol and hybrids sitting in car parks. The fact is new car sales have dropped by a third since 2017 but the manufacturers have just kept building. You’re out of luck thinking the 22%, it looks like there isn’t a single manufacturer who won’t exceed the target. Prices are being reduced because no one is buying new cars of any description. Reason, because it’s throwing good money after bad. Buying new cars is a waste of money, and those of us that understand this never buy cars.

Some companies will make the effort and be successful i.e. Tesla, BMW, BYD, MG, Peugeot, Renault. However lazy old fashioned companies who relied on the same customers being loyal (whatever crap they serve up) will die e.g. VW (diesel gate etc.), Nissan (heavily in debt), Toyota (sticking to hydrogen and fossil fuels). These three companies were big and very profitable in the largest market in the world (China), but no longer sell there as that country is now 50% 'New Energy' vehicles.

Your premise that "no one wants them" is just wrong. If you look at the actual real data, rather than one person's views, you'll see that UK EV sales continues to rise and up 58.4% in November from Nov 23. Year to date EV market share is 18%, which is a 19% annual increase. The reason for these huge discounts is the penalties the car manufacturers have to pay for not meeting their emissions targets. They have to pay £15K on every ICE they sell so they are discounting the EV prices as this reduces their penalties and lowers their fleet emissions.

Everyone seems to get the story half right! For everyone who does not want a EV there is someone out there that wants a EV. Maybe 50% of the people want a EV or-maybe less. But there is a market out there. The batteries are getting better, the cost of batteries continues to come down and the range is getting longer. Right now EV’s are still a bit higher than ICE cars. The fact that there is no , oil, oil filter , transmission, engine, belts, hoses, transmission fluid, radiator, coolest , water pump and many other parts means that you are basically dealing with a motor and batteries ! Period.

“Sales of electric cars in the UK grew in October despite overall demand for vehicles shrinking as manufacturers raced to meet government targets. Carmakers sold 29,800 electric cars during the month, up by a quarter compared with the same month last year, according to data published on Tuesday by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), a lobby group. That growth came despite overall October sales falling by 6% year on year. Sales of diesels were down by a fifth and petrol cars dropped by 14%.”

My diesel mini depreciated 30% in the first year; thereafter normal depreciation curve. Running costs were always 12/13 p/mile PLUS garage bills of £200 to £425 each year. @@davidwhitton5519 '19 plate paid £27k on 18/10/2020. Auto trader now advertising similar (high) spec with slightly lower mileage for £15k, so let's say £14k. I am OK with £13k depreciation in four years. Adjusting for inflation, insurance is very close to my old Mini Cooper D - thus irrelevant to this conversation. So factoring in depreciation of £13k means my total running costs are now £13968 ➗ 18000 = 77 pence per mile. Now let's look at my neighbours Ford Puma (also a '19 plate). In 2020 this would have been valued at £21k, and Autotrader values it now as £13k i.e. just a drop of £8k in four years. So its total running costs would be £8k + £2412 (Fords generous 45mpg and £6 per gallon) + £800 (just two years serving) + £760 (VED) = £10972 ➗ 18000 = 66 pence per mile. Expensive vehicles always have a high £depreciation; irrespective of fuel type. I always keep my cars for 10+ years so depreciation becomes less of a factor. My BEV will not cost £400+ for servicing each year nor will I be paying the 15 p/mile for gasoline. Without doing a spreadsheet, I would guess the Break Even Point (BEV cf fossil) comes at year six. I have bought my electricity at 23 pence per kWh. The data above would look very different if I had been on an Octopus EV tariff of 7 pence per kWh !

My family are getting two new cars this year. My wife's just got my Mum's Honda Jazz. Perfect car. I'm getting a company Milkfloat. I chose it because it's got the best interior and best seats of all the milkfloats that were offered. Couldn't see any way of choosing.

With great respect sir, this theme of EV carnages followers who are forced into EVs as company cars is very much the only way new ones are being sold it seems. I don’t know anyone who ever had/has a company car , is it a South of England thing?

Thanks for your fantastic reviews and advice. You made me laugh. In the meantime, I’ll stick to my 2012 Focus 1.6 diesel with 90k on it and regularly serviced.

There are currently 34.000 Evs stuck parked up In Avonmouth docks, Because dealers can’t sell current stock.. Southport has a Brown site with 22.000 EVs parked up some as long as 3 years unsold, Portsmouth, Caryard 4 acres full of EVs unsold, And it’s the same all over the country..

Apparently there are 1.1million EV's in the UK registered as sold roughly 1 in 34. Where I live there is no way 1 in 34 cars are an EV more like 1 in 100. When my mum lives in Chalfont and Latimer in Buck which is more affluent you see more but still not as many as claimed. This guy is 100& correct in my opinion with the evidence I have-My own eyes. None of my friend want EV's and we all know about this un-obtainable targets

My mate just took delivery of his new Toyota LandCruiser Linited edition version diesel ...he says he considers it an heirloom as it will outlast him and diesel is THE fuel that will be readily available for decades to come. He is the 5th friend to buy diesel recently, two have bought new petrol and not one an EV ( one has one as a company car , Polestar).
